Hi, my question is what's the difference between a router/switch and ont? Are those limited to gpon sfp module meaning can we make any switch a gpon ont by insert an compatible gpon sfp into it? Last, are gpon ont sfp and gpon onu spf the same or there's difference?
Regarding the first question (What's the difference between a router/switch and ont?): They are 3 distinct things. A router serves as a gateway between your public internet address and the devices in your local network, doing what is called Network Address Translation (NAT). A switch does not do that, neither does an ONT (unless it is a combined ONT/router unit, which is the piece of equipment that ISPs usually install in the client's home). An ONT serves as a converter between optical fiber and copper cables and handles the authentication with a fiber ISP's OLT. A switch serves to connect multiple devices within a local network. Regarding the second question (Are those limited to gpon sfp module?): ONTs are not limited to SFP modules. There are also ONTs with ethernet connection instead of SFP, which can be used to connect to a router's ethernet WAN port. Regading the third question (can we make any switch a gpon ont by insert an compatible gpon sfp into it?): In this case, the ONT is actually the GPON SFP module, not the router or switch . But you could attach a GPON SFP module to a switch to convert from SFP to ethernet and then connect another port of the switch to a WAN port of a router. In this case, the switch would not be behaving as a switch, but rather as as media converter (which is another piece of equipment you can buy to connect the SFP module). But in any case you would still need a router to do the network address translation. Regarding the fourth question: "Last, are gpon ont sfp and gpon onu spf the same or there's difference?": There's technically a difference between an ONU and an ONT, but these terms are usually used interchangeably. The expressions "GPON ONT SFP" and "GPON ONU SFP" refer to the same thing. But, in this case, technically, we're actually talking about an ONT, not an ONU.
@@vitorao Thanks for taking time to write really detailed answer. It really cleared my doubt. I have another one, for user management, what's the difference between a gpon ont and ethernet switch that's using gpon sfp module? Are they both using Vlan to separate the traffic or there's some difference in their working.
@@RahulAhire, it's pretty unusual to have a switch with a GPON SFP module. Those modules are usually intended for being used directly in a router with an SFP port. Regarding the difference between using a GPON SFP module and an ONT with ethernet connection, they are usually intended for different use scenarios. A simple ONT with ethernet connection is a cheaper solution designed to work with simple routers that only have ethernet connection, and that will work fine for most users. SFP GPON modules, on the other hand, are usually intended for corporate networks that use high-end routers and require an internet connection faster than 1 gigabit/s, as most ethernet connections won't support speeds higher than that. Also, attaching a SFP module directly into a router saves space (which can be a very important thing in corporate racks with tons of equipment) in comparison to using a separate ONT.
@@RahulAhire, regarding the VLAN question, there will not be much difference between a GPON SFP module and an ONT. Both will usually have 2 options. One is called "transparent mode", which will allow the traffic from all VLANs to be directed to the router, and then you will need to configure what to do with each specific VLAN on the router. The other option it to tag a specific VLAN, which will allow only traffic from a specific VLAN, and then you do not need to do any VLAN configuration on the router. The latter is usually done when you need only one VLAN to go into the router and you have an old router that does not support VLAN management.
At present, Southeast Asia can be adapted, and our interface is super simple, both Chinese and English, and I can pre-configure it before delivery, and you can use it when you get it!
Since you are using UniFi/Ubiquiti products, you can take a look at the UniFi Switch 8 PoE (150W) or the EdgeSwitch 8 150W. They are quite expensive IMO. I will grab a 5 ports PoE switch, such as the Netgear GS305P or TP-Link TL-SG1005P and a media converter for the SFP module.
Great video. I have the same ZTE GPON ONU from my service provider. I stumbled across this video, because I was looking for work around instructions for how to put my ZTE router into Bridge Mode. I have since discovered that the ISP can remotely configure their customer’s routers to Bridge Mode, but only agree to do it if they pay a very small premium for a static IP address (It’s only $1.5 per month anyway). What does this apparatus do?
My ISP router has ACS enabled and has its username and password. Do you know if I can use this to switch my ISP router?
Hi, I have no chance working with ACS so I can be sure it will work. However, I believe it is something configured on the router side, not the Fiber/GPON. First, you will need to understand your ONU and OTL before we can move on.
thanks for this videos ,plz can help me to make the same operation ,I have EdgeRouters 12, ZTE F660 ,FTTH
Hi, sorry for the late response.
From what I know, if the ONT is ZTE, most likely the OLT will be either ALU or ZTE.
In this case, you can try the Nokia G-010S-A which I already made the video. This GPON SFP module should be available on Taobao, AliExpress and other marketplaces.
@@VanTechCorner thanks for replay
Nice... // The suggested video is not working on RUclips. Consider to mirror to odysee platform as well.. Thank you
Bạn ơi có thể làm video việt hóa được k ạ
Thank you!!!
Is this SFP module compatible with Mikrotik 4011 routerboard?
Yes, compatible with Mikrotik 4011
@@vuducdong, thank you. I've just tested it with Mikrotik 4011 and indeed it works great.
Very nice, thanks
Hi I have followed many of your excellent guides as well as onemarcfifty, I am on BT full fibre in the uk I have a ONT connection which goes directly to my r7800 using NSS 22.03 openwrt
Why would one replace the ONT? I am a little puzzled by this what are the benefits to swapping out the ISP connection, I have excellent uptime and my speeds are more or less as advertised
Very curious as to the point of this exercise
Hi, there is pros and cons of doing this and we have another comment discuss this. If you have no issue using the ONT from the ISP, there is no need to replace it. Along the way, when you slowly upgrading your network rack and want to reduce the number of devices to build a nice rack, perhaps you will need one
what will be the improvement using the gpon ? more speed?
A little space is saved, and that's it.
No backdoor on the ONT device?
@@somebody301 What can a backdoor do when it is on a separate network, protected by your router/firewall? It is located at your home doesn't mean it can do anything -- it is basically like a malicious device on the Internet.
You will have more control of the devices and more statistic of the “ONT/PON Stick”. Save space, save power and you don’t need a power adapter for the ONU … Less cables, simple setup …These are thing I can think of. There is no clear evidence but the PON stick will also increase the connection stability (both Fiber and Ethernet). I have the PPPoE connection up and running for more than 3 months with no down time.
Anyone knows if this work with ISP in Canada?
what about xgs-pon , which one would i need ?
I have yet to use it so no clear information on this. However, I can see that XGS-PON use a different wavelength compare to the GPON, this is something you need to pay attention to when looking for a compatible XGS-PON SFP model/ONU. For the authentication I believe it will be more or less the same...
@@VanTechCorner thank you. and great channel you have very informative and love you videos showcasing openwrt and the latest embedded devices,
@@lixxus-m did you found a solution for xgs-pon?
Where can you get those modules?
Hi, the Hisense LT33415 is dis-continued but you can find the NOKIA GPON SFP G-010S-A, here is an update video about it ruclips.net/video/3g6mRDfUppQ/видео.html
Is it possible for ONU with landline?
Hi, landline has a different cable and ONT/ONU. I have yet to play with it, therefore, I can't provide more info.
Thanks !
