The latest wave of exfoliation technology is referred to as hydrodermabrasion, which has combined the concepts of microdermabrasion, crystalless microdermabrasion, and liquid forms of exfoliation. This technology utilizes a closed loop system and comes with a selection of different levels of abrasive discs that use permanently embedded industrial diamond or corundum crystals. Unlike crystal-less microdermabrasion handpieces that are simply a tube with the abrasive material embedded along the rim of the tube, hydrodermabrasion uses abrasive solid discs that are essentially flat and round in shape, approximately ¼ inch in diameter, and allow for a very expedient and consistent exfoliation of the skin. The concept of crystal-less microdermabrasion is to first abrade and then vacuum, with the abrasion depth and consistency dependent on the operator's physical pressure on the skin. Hydrodermabrasion handpieces, on the other hand, typically incorporate a clear plastic rounded tip that glides over the surface of the skin effortlessly and without trauma. The solid abrasion discs are inset from the tip approximately ¼ of an inch, which requires the system to vacuum and gently lift the skin to the abrasion disc, again returning the control of consistency and safety to the vacuum pressure of the device. Within the flat abrasion disks are strategically placed holes which allow for hydration fluids with well formulated properties to simultaneously finish the exfoliation process while cooling and hydrating the skin at the same time. Manufacturers suggest that upwards of 75% of the exfoliation takes place from the flat abrasion discs, with the hydrodermabrasion fluids representing the final 25%. Because all of this is taking place inside the clear plastic tip, the closed loop system effectively and meticulously vacuums away abraded skin and used, unabsorbed solution.
