I don't know if there's further to this convo, but it would be interesting to hear Crook's and Joell's feelings/thoughts on their writings after releasing it to whomever.
How do they feel about some of their lyrics blowing up, perhaps even more so than things they haven't given away?
What is the experience like coming into contact with artists and, perhaps, their claims of greatness or otherwise notoriety when these guys know they've taken from their pen to get said acclaim (if there is such a scenario)?
Is there a crisis of identity associated with the notion that another's voice or face is the only thing making something a hit when it was their lyrics that hit?
I'm curious, because, for one, I could not take another's writing as part of my own career, even if as a singer, but also, where's the line to be drawn for creatives and crafting, especially if we value experiences?
Are we more superficial than we say (I think that's a given, really, but with music as well?)?
Either way, I'd love to hear their perspectives.

I go back and forth with the ghostwriting shit. If I heard today Hov didn't write any of the shit I grew up on then I think I would feel a certain type of way. But at the end of the day it wouldn't fuck with my appreciation of the music. I still remember being in my late teens when someone showed me Rhymefests verse on Jesus Walks and it was the saame verse word for word and that exposed Ye using ghostwriters but I didn't care at all. I think the art is the most important thing. I do think it takes certain niggas out of conversations in terms of who is the best Emcee, etc. I fuck with Drake and he can rap, but niggas penning that much of your records makes you a great artist, but I can't say you're one of the best emcees ever. Ortiz brought up Al Green and his singing experiences. Al Green remade and sung Old Tunes that was already out already in the in the 50s and the 60s. I don't think he went through nothing personally (love life) for him to sing those love songs like that. 85% of his catalog is old classic songs that somebody else sung before him. He just added his own spice to it. And then he did church songs that people did already. If anything he should have made a song about that woman pouring hot grits on him. That song would have probably been a super classic.

I find it funny with little comments like Nas never really lived project life in QB, he just witnessed it from his window. Everybody who came up with Nas co-signed him being in the street as a young dude. But when Jay said "you witnessed from your folks pad, then scribbled in your note pad..." dudes ran with it. Yes, Nas had a song called Project Windows, but that was a literal concept. Dudes be killing me with that like Nas wasn't on the block and he was just posted up in the widow seal all day smh
