  • This is more of a travel video than rail video. My wife doesn't share my passion for trains, but she does like to holiday in coastal locations where warm weather is virtually guaranteed. Whilst eating lunch and watching RUclips on TV, Alex Polizzi (the Hotel Inspector) cropped up presenting a program about Puglia and Southern Italy, my wife said “I'd like to go there”. I went back to work, turned on my computer and an advert by Rail Discoveries appeared promoting one of their holidays to Puglia, I clicked on the advert and liked what was on offer, the price seemed reasonable for an all inclusive holiday and I already knew it was somewhere my wife wanted to visit so I went ahead and booked it.
In this video we take a look at the highlights of the tour, although the holiday was promoted by a company known for rail holidays, we travelled to Italy by air with a mix of coach and train travel between our hotel and the towns and villages featured in this tour.
On our first full day in Italy we visited the pretty hill top villages of Locorotondo and Martina Franca in the morning, returning to our hotel for lunch, in the afternoon we visited the popular seaside town of Polignano a Mare built right up to the cliff edges and the cliffs themselves are perforated with large caves, some dry, others at sea level.
On Day Two we caught a train to Lecce, an impressive city where the art of the stone mason can really be appreciated. There are many baroque churches within the city featuring spectacular interiors, notably the Basilica of the Holy Cross, The Duomo (Cathedral), The Castle of Charles V and the Roman Amphitheatre. After a guided tour and free time to visit the shops and cafes we returned to the station to make our way back to our hotel.
Day Three - A free day to enjoy the hotel facilities or visit the local towns/villages.
Day Four - We travel by train to Bari, a port town with a rich and fascinating history, it's the second most important city of Southern Italy after Naples. We start with a guided tour of the town after which we had free time to explore the shops and cafes before returning to the station to make our way back to our hotel.
Day Five - One of the main highlights of the holiday was a visit to Matera with a population of around 60,000, it is the capital of the province of Matera in the region of Basilicata. The city gained international fame for its ancient town, the Sassi de Matera “Stones of Matera” becoming a UNESCO world heritage site in 1993. The town is famous for its cave dwellings, these originate from a prehistoric troglodyte settlement and are believed to be some of the earliest human habitats in Italy. A “Sassi” is a house dug into the rock on the side of the ravine.
Day Six - Another of the main highlights of the holiday was a visit to Alberobello. Our coach takes us into the Valle d’Itria, an area known for trulli houses. The town has a population of around 11,000 and since 1996 has been a UNESCO world heritage site due to its proliferation of trulli. Trulli (singular: trullo) are small round buildings of drystone construction with a conical roof, they are peculiar to the Valle d’Itria in Puglia and were originally used as field shelters, storehouses or accommodation for agricultural workers. Trulli are designed to be constructed and dismantled quickly, hence why they are built without mortar, they were designed to exploit a tax loophole because they were classed as temporary buildings and as such did not qualify for property tax. Alberobello did not gain “town” status until 1797 because up to that that point the occupants lived in homes classed as temporary structures. Many trulli have a carved sandstone pinnacle on top of the roof which is thought to be the signature of the stone mason responsible for its construction. Some trulli have whitewashed religious symbols of good luck painted on their roofs.

Hello Bob, Italy is a wonderful country with a diverse and surprising landscape. Being a long thin country it is well suited to high-speed rail. I have booked one of my next three trips and I'll book the other two if I survive next month’s trip to South Africa on a tour that is likely to push me to the limits of both my stamina and filming abilities. I intend to visit New Zealand and Australia again next year, the date will depend on whether or not the railways I intend to visit have completed all the necessary maintenance work required to allow trains to run over their full lengths. Take care 🍺🍻 Tim.

Hello Hans, this isn't my usual video subject, but I set this channel up as a travel channel and from time to time I ignore the RUclips Algorithm to post what I want as opposed to what the algorithm wants me to post. I have plenty of cab-ride videos in the can ready to post and I know they will get better viewing figures, but I will be posting more travel videos knowing that my viewing figures will suffer. I like trains, I love travel, the world is an amazing place full of surprises 🍺🍻 Best wishes from Tim in the UK.
