    I love your detailed informative videos. Never knew the trick with the A/C to make the fan kick on .. Although I'm positive that's' what my issue is.. If I idle too long more than even a couple minutes and I start overheating but if I'm driving the temperature will stay good. Thanks for the trouble shooting tips !

    PNW Car Mods & Maintenance : I have a 2011 Crown Victoria LX. . It's got a little over 140,000 miles. I'm having an over heating problem. It doesn't happen all the time, though. But it does seem to happen with the A/C on. The fan doesn't seem to work all the time. If the engine cools off, and I turn off the A/C, I can drive home OK. I may have thirty miles to go, or more, and the needle on the temp. gauge won't climb above the halfway mark. Should I get a new fan, or is the fan the problem? Sometimes the fan works. Sometimes it don't. Anyway, the car has over heated three times in the past five months.

    • @PNW_Car_Mods
      @PNW_Car_Mods  9 месяцев назад

      Unplug the cylinder head temp sensor by the thermostat housing. IIRC this will force the fan to run on high full time all the time the engine is running. If your fan doesn't run then it is definitely bad. If it does run on high full time and you still have overheating problems then you have an mechanical issue with the engine. These kinds of issues can take some time to diagnose for sure.

    You guys need to get under and remove AT cooling lines.
    On Fords they are connected to the fan shroud with clips.
    I learned the hard way. I broke the top of the fan shroud and still couldn't take the fan out.

    • @PNW_Car_Mods
      @PNW_Car_Mods  Год назад

      Yup you are right. It's a toss up whether you want to pop them out from down below or from the top. I thought from the top was fine. It comes up at the 7:00 mark. and on reassembly at the 13:00 mark. Reassembly I was brain farting and said AC lines when I meant transmission cooler lines. We thankfully didn't break a single thing on this job. Also are transmission cooler is not in use on this car so those lines aren't doing anything. (manual 5spd installed).

    I did the 5 speed swap and now the fan stays on high. I think its because the ECM doesn’t see trans temp anymore, so it defaults to hot and trys to cool the trans. I put a trans temp resistor in line on the trans wiring harness on the passenger side. But it still runs on high. Even with a tune that took out the trans inputs.

      If you can't get the fan run on max by either turning on the AC after the car is warmed up or by unplugging the cylinder head overtemp sensor then you have to suspect the fan. I have seen replacement off shore fan controllers on places like ebay for like 20 bucks. I wouldn't trust them to save my life though. There has to be a reason that Ford and other autoparts stores don't sell just a controller and I don't think it's to rip you off. Also make sure the connector that feeds the fan motor isn't melted inside.

    • @PNW_Car_Mods
      @PNW_Car_Mods  2 года назад +1

      Negative. We used them right out of the package. The reason I actually bought these was 4 out of the 8 originals got damaged by no choice when we changed the plugs. It is fairly normal for them to seem long when they are new. With these I probably had to force them down about maybe a 1/4" with the bolts if that makes sense. Not super forceful but just enough to compress the boots and springs onto the plug. Basically I would push the coil down all the way with one hand then then run the bolt all the way in with my other hand. I'm fairly certain that even if you have brand new factory ford boots and springs they will act the same way. Not positive but I believe so.

    • @PNW_Car_Mods

      We did a couple different tests that 100% should have had the fan on and it wasn't coming on. So that's when we very carefully started hitting the fan motor with a hammer under the same conditions and it came roaring to life. So in our case it was absolutely the fan motor itself that had gone bad.

    • @PNW_Car_Mods
      @PNW_Car_Mods  2 года назад +1

      If it works with the AC on the fan motor is working. These things take a long time to warm up but if the fan is not working it will go straight to running hot after the long warm up. Our problem was it didn't work at all. Dead motor. I don't know for certain but I suppose there could be a problem with the speed controller unit keeping it from working at lower fan speeds. To check the lower fans speeds drive the car around for around 20 minutes and then come back and park. Then hold the rpms at like 1500 for a couple minutes with the hood closed then go carefully check it for operation. At lower fan speeds it will be on but you can't hear it.

      The volkswagen is sitting at work rotting away. It needs the engine ripped out of it and then the rest is getting chopped up and thrown in the dumpster. Yes, I will likely put the whole car in a dumpster in pieces. The only way this won't happen is if a place like pick n pull will take an engineless car. The car trailer will be back sooner than later. I don't have a place to work on it inside so it's hard to do rust removal priming and painting in the rain and snow. Also have a handful of welding projects that need to be done on it.
