I was shopping for a 2020 ST with low miles but the asking prices were on average $5-7K higher than comparable Durango RT. So I started researching the DDRT and found out how restricted the 5.7 is from the factory. That’s all it took to make my decision. That HEMI rumble with the resonator delete is like a drug.

I own a 2022 Explorer ST. I LOVE THIS SUV! For a 3.0 litre, twin turbo, it's quick. Love the 10-speed transmission. It's quick in NORMAL mode, as well as SPORT mode. All wheel drive that hugs the road with a low center of gravity. I know Ford could have done a little more to the interior, but I have ZERO complaints.

    • @ssj02

More sports feel no doubt. Towing goes to the Durango that's granted as well. On the refreshed or newer features I think Ford comes out on top mainly due to the fact that it is a newer car. But don't you think that the Durango is a better ride altogether? I mean the truck feel, character and overall placement of the car on the road?

10R80 in the ST. It's QUICK for a 3 litre, twin-turbo. Ford does know how to build a transmission. The shop I work for specializes in racing automatics, and I haven't seen an ST in the shop yet. Ford factory knew how to build a transmission that can "accommodate," the horsepower. Only 400 horses, but the 10 speed is vicious.

Gears winding down and staying in gear to keep accelerating if needed. Add in 93 Oct, and it is much more spunky. I got the Cold air in-take for it but I have 15k on it right now " bought it new" so I want to make sure I can get it fixed without issue if need be "up till 36K". With 40 more horses it’s an obvious winner stock. But you can make up the difference and then some by unlocking the 5.7 potential. I love the Mopar tuner aspects of the Dodge world and I’m coming from a 5.7 Jeep GC so it’s a little familiar but definitely More gear-heads. I really like the ST too, so I don’t think either is a bad choice. If you want more speed right off the lot then Ford ST, if you’re a gear head and want a big power build or need more towing power RT.

I was hoping this video might give me more insight. I have the Durango RT, 2023. Waiting for the Explorer ST, 2023 to arrive at the dealer. I like the hemi, too, but just not convinced overall that the Dodge is the keeper. Once the ST arrives, I'll drive it and compare the two. My preference is for a solid feeling drive, little body roll in corners. I think that Ford may win in that respect, as the Dodge seems to roll just a touch more than I'd like. I'm coming from the Corvette platform... so it's not fair to compare these with that... but I'm pretty spoiled by the extra firm ride I had in the 'vette. Power-wise... the Ford wins. Twin turbos and all that. We shall see. Thanks for the review, well done.

Sadly, unless you can drive well, even the 2.3 Ecoboost will win at the stoplight drags. That extra bulk (950 lbs) over the 2.3 Explorer gives the Ford a big advantage.

I purchased a ST and never even look at the Durango. But, my second choice was a WK2 Grand Cherokee trailhawk with the 5.7.
That Durango interior does look good, but in my mind it is completely ruined by the combo gauge cluster which looks like a child designed it. The ST interior is functional and purposeful, and like you said the steering wheel, seats, and everything you touch is placed perfectly. But by no means is the interior perfect. I don't mind the plastic as it isn't trying to hide what it is.. I also own a C5 Corvette.
I wish they made a 3 row WK2 matching grand cherokee with styling similar to the 2 row. Imho, the Durango looks extremely dated and boring on the outside. The ST looks sick.
Power / upgrade and handling wise the ST wins. It's powertrain is amazing and I am a big fan of the 5.7 hemi too. I can tow my light stand up jet skis at 80+ and get over 20mpg. My primarily in traffic/ city / drive it like I stole it driving pattern nets 17mpg, with auto stop start off. To put that in perspective, I have a work friend with a Focus RS with similar commute and driving and he also gets 17.
The 6th Gen Explorer is by no means perfect but it gets a lot of important stuff right for the price. As a guy who really likes good powertrains in my vehicles, it's that and the handling which finally sold me.

Especially the mid range muscle sport/ mid range luxury. So you didnt have to go from a base Chevrolet impala to a Cadillac ct6. For performance and luxury. If this was pre 08 youd have a more sportier two door faster version affordable or a more luxurious model 2 and 4 door. Then have dual luxurious and sport then youd have the top of the line Cadillac ct6 for the flagship.
