Fun fact about Jim, he also was a Metal head in high school. But he hung around with a bunch of punks. He was also probably a better guitar player than he was a bassist. He was a good friend of mine. A few days before he passed I had tried to get him go see this band Calavera with
Me. He declined saying he was going to hang out with his wife and watch a movie. He invited me to a 4th of July party at his parents house, but for some reason or another I didn’t make it. He passed 3 days later. I wish I would have gone. Miss you Jim. RIP brother.

I highly recommend the opener "Weight of the world" or "A credit to his gender'. Both songs have great driving bass lines and the whole record is amazing.

Ryan Greene was the producer of this record, and pretty much the sound that you praise in the video, has been the benchmark for many skate punk bands, the so called "fat wreck sound". Additional note on the bass intro; there are two bass tracks, one for the higher notes/chords, and the second track is root (lower) notes, hence, that feeling of perfect frequency balance

This album, while I LOVE it, is pretty early in their long career. Twisted by design is the peak of the more straight forward punk sound. Then after that album they pivot into the darker metal guitars, but still keep the blazing speed and melody. So unique, they're one of my all time favorites. Glad to see them get some love.

This album is an all timer for me and was my soundtrack for end of high school/beginning of college. They do indeed have a huge metal influence, which caused some issue initially to getting signed with Fat Wreck and is something that they lean into even more heavily as their career progresses. I think it's because it's really easy to go from a power chord to a first inversion chord (without the 5th) and it obviously sounds really good. Another awesome video! SO is my favorite band!! This album is part of the Fatwreck Era that defined the skatepunk sound of the 90s. Ryan Greene was a huge huge influence in developing that sound.

One of my favorite bands. Jim Cherry was so awesome and wrote most of their best songs. He was such a good dude, too. Saw them many times when he was still with them, as well with Pulley. RIP Jim. Glad you enjoyed his playing.

Love it! You're right about them being able to hang in a more metal setting. I always felt Strung Out played a lot heavier than a lot of socal punk bands. You can really hear it in something like Bring Out Your Dead from the same album.

I see a lot of people credit Fletcher from the band Pennywise with what became the fairly ubiquitous guitar tone amongst Fat Wreck/Epitaph bands of that era, a metallic sound with the bass & treble maxed & the middle scooped out entirely

  • @anthonyphilipharriso
    @anthonyphilipharriso 8 месяцев назад

Such a classic intro and bass line. Jim Cherry also wrote a beautiful bass riff in the bridge of the song Paper Walls, on the album Twisted By Design. Most of their songs are in D standard and that was the remixed version btw which I feel sanitises the spirit of the original record.

My favorite band! I have so much to say here lol
-Your intuition is spot on. Jake's tone (plays Jackson guitars a lot) is great for metal!
-their replacement bassist, Chris Aiken, is a guitarist who "got demoted to bass" (his joke) and writes a lot of their guitar parts. It's interesting to see a guitarist's style on bass.
-i think you'd love some of their newer music. They slowly transitioned from skate punk to a pretty technical heavy metal (I love it all). Check out stuff like "Never Speak Again", "Westcoasttrendkill" or "White Owl" for a taste of how they've evolved.

I was into metal through my sophomore year then started to listen to punk with my skateboard buddies. The biggest difference to me was just what you said. Metal was centered on the guitars. Punk was centered on equal parts. Melodic but fast.
Love what you do a ton. Not just the punk but all of it.

Such a tragedy Jim passed away so early; he was a talented guy. In the opening track on his band Zero Down's album With a Lifetime to Pay, one of my top favorite albums ever, he sings "if the truth is spoken will I stand the test of time." I think he will.

Best Strung Out album to me since I first heard it in the late 90s. Saw them live in Pittsburgh for my first time in 2002 and got the pleasure of meeting and shooting the shit after the show with them. Cool dudes. In reference to this video, I made sure to watch the bass and learned this song from seeing it live front stage. Bass chords = beauty.

Yup, you nailed it, Strung Out is pretty firmly seated in the skate punk sub genre…heck I’d even go so far to say they started that sound!😄 Later they do get a bit heavier, more metalcore and technical, as they just continued to get better at playing and writing. They’re a super tight and technical band today, but they never really lose those signature Strung Out melody hooks! 🤟
My favourite song is probably Swan Dive, it’s a beautiful song, a real uplifting fist pumper that just inspires you immediately! City Lights is pretty damn good too, one of my favourite opening guitar riffs for sure, and the fuckin drums on that track, like damn! 😄Definitely catch them live if you ever get a chance! It’s an experience! 🔥
