Yeah, this review is pretty late. As some of you may know, I'm suffering from a mystery illness that limits what food my stomach can tolerate and drains my energy. The good news is that my brother has been seeing a doctor for it for 6 months and he's narrowed it down to either being a fungus or parasite.
If it's the fungus, the medication is pretty cheap and you only have to take it for 2 weeks. If it's a parasite, it will be a bit more expensive but still not too bad. The bad news is in both cases I will likely have even less energy to make videos so I'm probably only going to release one more video this month. And in the case of the stomach fungus, usually only immuno-compromised people get it which would be really bad for obvious reasons.
Worst case scenario, it's neither and I'm stuck with this mystery disease for a while. It really saps my motivation for making videos so I'm probably only going to make positive videos until I feel better. I know some of you have been waiting for me to cover good games for a while so I guess that's some good news.

The RE4 remake isn't bad - far from it, I'd say -, but the most remarkable thing about it is its relation to the original - which is sort of the problem. I honestly don't think the remake will have the staying power the original had, which is unfortunate when you consider the amount of work that went into this game. It lacks the memorable character of the original (due to a pursuit of more "realism") and it also fails to revolutionize anything like the original - what with this being the third iteration of a formal which was already well tried and tested.
I can't see interest in this game making it beyond this year. Sure, I can see people bringing it up here and there, but always in a middling "yeah, that was pretty cool" kind of tone.

    • @Gruntvc
      @Gruntvc Год назад +37

I agree, can't be "revolutionary" when you're pretty much copying mechanics from other AAA games.
Man I miss the times when RE set trends, not followed them.
Even RE7 and RE2 2019 kicked off a survival horror revival in the indie/AA market.
What's RE4 2023 supposed to do when they completely changed its core design?

    • @jackjax7921

Revolutionary is an overrated comparison is like comparing James Naismith to Michael Jordan.

    • @spnked9516
      @spnked9516 Год назад +41

@@Gruntvc Remakes of modern (modern enough, anyways) games occupy a pretty unfortunate space. The wider industry (unfortunately) hasn't deviated all that far from a decade ago. What's more, in the facets that do different, haphazardly integrating them into a remake of a more modern game can lead to undermining the original intent of that work.
The RE4 remake is a really good example of this. They took a more methodical game and modified it's mechanics to speed everything up simply because faster shooters are more commonplace now. It might have been possible to retain that more methodical and intentional design of the original, but I believe the developers of the remake either didn't know how or lacked the confidence to commit to it.
I keep finding myself asking the same question - why do these remakes exist? Of course, the answer is money - but on the "higher" level of truly loving and respecting this medium, these remakes really can't justify their own existence. I would honestly rather see all the resources and efforts put into these games dumped into new IPs that might become classics in their own right.
We live in a very risk averse world, I'm afraid.

The biggest example is Leon's first meeting with Luis. Another thing I have noticed, not just in the RE4 Remake, but in games in general is how bad voice acting has gotten in the past couple of years. I have no idea what kind of people they're hiring, but they clearly have never done voice acting and it shows. It's a shame as well, since OG RE4 had great voice acting. At least the game as a whole is good. Was pretty worried after RE3R so it's good to be proven wrong for once.

There’s a few reasons. One, there was a voice actor strike, which meant union VA’s couldn’t work. Now it was some years ago, but games take years to make and depending on their role they might be grandfathered in for future roles rather than be replaced.
Another is as he mentioned, there’s a bit of a trend going on to only hire VA’s of the same race as the character. It’s still niche in practice, but it does happen in spots, notably with Capcom. They’re doing it with the new Street Fighter (although they might’ve dropped certain VA’s because they don’t like their views or some garbage).
And I’d say a third reason is the Hollywood factor. They’ll get celebrities to voice characters rather than seasoned VA’s. I guess they think it’ll get them more attention/sales by doing it, but in reality it likely just costs them a ton of money for no return, and in some cases (for the artistic aspect) it’s a detriment because they suck compared to professional voice actors. Yet another reason why this “games are expensive to make!” spiel is nonsense. They go out of their way to make games ore expensive than find alternatives to lower production costs, but don’t. It’s on them. Those are some reasons why voice acting isn’t as good, most notably in AAA games.

    • @kielbasamage
      @kielbasamage Год назад

@@mrshmuga9 Capcom dropped the VA for Ken, who also voices Dante from the DMC series, for his views regarding… a certain untested medicine created for a recent viral emergency we all had to deal with. Which is one of the other plagues on the VA community that has them similar to Hollywood: if you don’t lean the exact same way as everybody else, they will tear you to pieces to feed on the scraps. So you end up with a majority of them acting the same way. Frankly, you end up with backstabbing prima donnas who put more stock into pretty much everything, with the ability to actually voice act sitting far in the back.

I agree he's a bit too antagonistic with Luis for most of the game, but it's not like the game didn't establish why Leon doesn't like him from the start.
By contrast, Luis in the original game is fairly up-front and decent with Leon from the start, as they chat about Raccoon City for a bit before they escape.

The more I play this game the more frustrated I get. The game feels pretty amazing the first playthru, but upon follow up playthrus you will notice some glaring issues like being stunlocked combod, how you lose control of your character if you get hit by a fire weapon(torch), sometimes leaving a melee prompt gets you hit because leons kick is small, but when he exits the animation he has no s so he can't defend himself.
My god are the guns inaccurate. I've accidentally killed Ashely several times with the TMP in the garbage disposal because the spread is HUGE. Why is the magnum so hard to stabilize, granted it's OP if you can stablize it then let rip even Vertigo melts on a maxed butterfly. Sometimes you trade with the enemy, you'll shoot a shotgun shell and they'll hit you the same frame and you don't get the shot out, but it eats one of your bullets. Bosses can regen health if you take too long in sequences. They added several awesome new guns that you don't get access till very late in the game making it feel pointless.
I've had multiple instances of me shotgunning a ganado and a head parasite comes out and proceeds to bitch slap the ever living fuck out of me, and stunlock me from FULL in a 3 hit combo mean while im mashing the briefcase button to try to heal, but i CAN'T EVEN HEAL THRU THE FUCKING COMBO HELP ME IT'S SO CHEAP. I very fairly get mad at PvE game, but I straight up have yelled at my monitor due to the clunkyness of the character handling at times, i've had several instances of accidentally vaulting or dropping down from somewhere even tho leon isn't even near the ledge leading me to getting combo'd like it's a fkin fighting game. Still a great game, but I feel a few changes would really improve it. Mercanaries is low key mid. Krauser is fine, and leon is exactly what you expect but hulk and Luis are just so underwhelming. Hulk's melee kill is extremely slow to the point it's a risk to use, and Krauser's bow is REALLY slow to draw up a arrow for some reason. Besides that mercenaries is pretty intense and a good addition to get you that little RE fix. Krauser do be feelin like a savage badass when you play him. The problem with losing progress is, most of the time, it's just going to bum out the player by making them repeat the same stuff they previously did. To fix that, you add a very complex A.I. that gives some ''character'' to the enemies. Like in Meta Gear Solid, there are enemies who are weak, scared and goofy and immediately give in to your threats and then, there are brave heroic ones who will risk their life to take you down.
Make the enemies respawn with random character and have many different behaviours instead of a simple pattern and that's how you add tons of replayability to the game. Of course the game will be short though, 5-20 hours depending on the budget.

My playtime on the PS4 version alone is over 150 hours and I own every version of the original. On Standard difficulty the remake is way easier then the OG because of the parry system, charms and cases, being able to move and shoot, and the OP melee attacks. On Pro I still say the remake is slightly easier, but it's in no way a walk in the park.

@@nolanlehman6392 There is a huge incentive to be positive no matter what (if you’re an individual review channel). It’ll get you into studios’ good graces which can mean early review copies, but also involved in their PR (hosting/joining their official streams) and whatnot which is even more money. I mean, the review journalist to company PR pipeline has been well demonstrated with big review sites. And that’s where they actually have a steady pay rate. Let alone a youtuber with a fluctuating algorithm and pay. It’s a way for those people to move up and try to escape the RUclips algorithm because trying to live off of that long-term is extremely risky than getting in bed and eventually hired by a company.
Also, the internet is toxically positive. Yes there’s obviously the opposite side, but look at any major game announcement trending. If you mention any worries or criticisms there’s WAY more people who will say “just let people have fun” or “stop ruining my hype” than those saying “no one should like this game”. You’re not allowed to voice concerns of a game because so many people live in “hype culture” (marketing buzz overglow). They don’t want to confront the possibility of a game not being some super-amazing thing they’ve built up in their head (or bought into all the marketing without considering what it doesn’t say about it). So they tell other people to shut up because they live in a bubble and any opposing thought will burst it. Rather than see it for what it is and entertain possible issues as they’re brought up. And the irony is a lot of time these people will say “you’re being too negative” (when most aren’t, it’s just that they get annoyed their concerns are immediately disregarded) will agree with most/all of the points the “negative” person made…. 6-12 months later. After the hype phase is gone and it’s no longer part of the cultural zeitgeist in the first 1-2 weeks before/after launch. And a bunch are usually issues that have happened with a lot of other games, but the toxically positive people ignored the warning signs. And despite learning a hard lesson… they fall for it again with the next big release. They keep falling for the marketing when the marketing will never highlight what’s negative about it. Or spin it into a way to make it sound positive.

Just cause IGN makes some bad reviews doesn't mean people like skill up or ACG aren't good at what they do. It seems to me like there's been a wave of counter positivity just for the sake of it in many cases. It's undeniable some people choose to not like things or be willfully dickish because the vast majority enjoy it and they wanna feel special. It's not all the time, but it's certainly a thing. @@nolanlehman6392 “Counter positivity” only really comes from viewers/commenters. There aren’t any review channels with a decent size following that are contrarians for the sake of attention (I can only think of one guy and he’s clearly game-ing the algorithm just by looking at his thumbnails). Everyone else are either neutral or positive. It’s not like you can’t find some decent reviewers in the rough, but the biggest ones will definitely downplay criticisms to cozy up to studios. Because they’ll host their streams or do some sort of PR for them. A clear conflict of interest but they don’t care. You’re ignoring the reality of content creation. A lot of these individual content creators eventually want at get a job at one of these companies, because they’re not so much interested in being a reviewer as much as they’re fans of XYZ and talking about/reviewing games at release is the quickest way to build an audience. They know they likely can’t rely on RUclips revenue forever, which is why they pivot to an industry job. It’s smart, but it’s not ethical when you’re aware and reflect on their content.
“People just want to be contrarian because X is popular”
Have you entertained the thought that they’re just disappointed with the choices made? Why is it that just because “everybody” loves something, if you don’t it’s only because you just want to be a “hater?”.
I can acknowledge that there’s probably some people who are more positive about something because the criticisms levied aren’t issues for them. But you can’t ignore the clear incestuous nature of the industry. You will likely not be able to be a “content creator” from 20-70 like you could with any other job. So at some point they need a backup plan or way to shift gears to something different/more reliable. That would be working at a company with a stable income, and where do you hit up first? Companies you already have a relationship with. And if you’re thinking ahead, it will likely impact your reviews. When you write that review, consciously of subsconiously, you might hold back because you’re worried if you’re “too harsh” that company might not keep you so close (or cut ties at worst) and you lose your opportunity. Which isn’t really an issue working for a company like IGN because you probably have multiple roles (various skills) and/or you have a steady income anyway. You don’t have to worry if your review only got 1,000 views versus 500,000 views. You get paid regardless. Content creators are not always “more honest” than those big sites because they don’t have any rules/procedures to follow, nor have a backup. If they get 100 views that month, they don’t get money despite whatever work they did. It’s incredibly more risky which means you’re more likely to play things _more_ safely.

A correction on stagger RNG. It’s not even RNG.
It’s just that enemies have multiple health bars in addition to their regular HP, and each weapon has hidden stats for each reaction (stopping power, dismemberment, and melee openers). The punisher has the best hidden stats for melee stuns btw, in case you’re curious.
So not unlike the OG, different enemies have different health, but it’s consistent. There’s no RNG outside of crits. I’m surprised that with multiple playthroughs you never noticed certain enemies always stun or dismember in one shot.
And if you’re using weapons with low stagger damage but high firepower (red9), you’ll notice enemies can die before triggering stuns. That’s because you’re exceeding their regular HP before the stun threshold is met.

My biggest issue is definitely the cheesy Hardcore/Professional, I really thought it was going to be engaging in a good way but I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up since any Japanese game with difficulty options and not just a set one are almost always artificially hard and not the thrilling kind. I went through my first playthrough on hardcore knowing that it was apparently a pain, but I'm super stubborn and if a game has a difficulty option and it isnt too unfair then I always go for it. Took my time and got like a 15 hour B rank and now I'm doing professional, got my shit kicked in getting adjusted to it and I was already at like 5 hours retrying stuff, went back earlier today and was able to first try the village and get past what I had been taking a while on a day before a lot quicker. The early sections are definitely the most frustrating since you cant reliably stagger Ganados at all until you can upgrade the Silver Ghost or actually have ammo for the Shotgun. Also knowing that deluxe edition players get some extra treasure spawning shit enabled for them that they can turn off, but it's still frustrating. It makes me feel elitist for saying so but I just dont know if I can take the opinion of people that end up playing with all the bonus safety-net shit as much as someone that plays the base game with no filler shit. Which wouldn't be a problem if they just didnt have this aforementioned shit muddying the waters but it's Capcom and they need to pad everything with a fuckton of small payments.

Synthetic Man basically summed it all up perfectly here. Cool game for sure, but i agree Leon's movements don't feel precise or tight enough sometimes when you change direction. You turn around and it sometimes feels like you're tripping over your own feet. You move in one direction but Leon goes in a slightly different direction for a split second. You move but your character animations take over for a second and drag you off course. Leon's running animations should have no effect on your movement inputs. The game would be so much better with tighter more precise movement.
I agree on the Verdugo boss fight too. Feels like you beat him with luck rather than skill. Hit the nitro and Verdugo usually comes from the wrong direction. You don't get time to see where he's coming from then hit the nitro button. I guess its possible to do the boss without getting hit if you're good at blocking his attacks with the knife. Im not though. Verdugo boss fight was designed better in the original.
I totally agree on the Ashley thing too. The 'wait' command in the original was far better than this new system where she's either glued to you or pisses off and runs into the enemy or your line of fire.
I was totally pissed that Mercenaries was dlc too. Should deffo have been in the game on release.

I gotta disagree with a lot of this
I thought the controls were fine and the gameplay was much more fun than the QTE ridden clunky original.
Alot of the stuff that was cut (IT not withstanding) was mainly filler that made the original drag. The new one has much better pacing, I never got bored in the remake, i got bored in the castle and island in the OG.
I also love how much attention to detail there was for smart players. Almost every chapter shortcuts you can either use with NG+ weapons or clever use of resources
things like shooting the bell at the start, shooting locks off the doors, shooting the blocks that hold down the cannons/castlegates etc.

Who in the name of fuck thought it'd be a good idea to implement the shitty "stay still so you can actually aim your fucking gun" in a game where you have 50 enemies around you wiggling around because muh realistic animations?
You could argue that it's to make it more similar to the original, where you couldn't move while aiming, but in that game the enemies didn't move every single one of their body parts separately at 1204km/s, and even just moving your camera interrupts the aiming process anyways. Damn, I thought the main problem zoomers had with the original game was that you couldn't move while aiming, which wasn't really a problem to begin with, but now they've really made it a problem.

The castle definitely feels like it was redesigned to feel less over-the-top or feel like you're dealing with "impossible space" where you have a room that is impossibly large or makes no actual since to fit in the area that it is actually placed. I think it is more for trying to make things flow better and shorten/remove some of the more frustrating segments like lava room. At least that's what I'm guessing.

Seems like Ada's VA isn't the only problem. Most of them are. Especially Krauser and Wesker. We've gone from Epic voice actors to normal sounding people, probably because Capcom is too cheap to hire the original VA's, and instead use new people who will take a smaller paycheck.

People should be critical of remakes and the OG should be held in an even higher regard. You don't get to just remake/repackage a "masterpiece" and sell it under the same title for a vastly inferior experience that does away with the original intents and design elements instead of buidling on top.
Any remake that removes stuff is an instant downgrade.

Firstly as synthetic says, the controls are DOGSHIT!!!! 2nd: bullet travel time (blows raspberry) 3rd: weapon bloom, 4th: bullet sponge enemies, 5th:stagger chance ect.ect.ect. Fuck me, the horrible controls ALONE considering its an action shooter are enough reason to say at the very least ITS NOT SUPERIOR...even bad. IMO the only thing superior about it is the story.

I have started 2 playthroughs on Hardcore that I've yet to finish, the second being an attempt at finding some fun in the game. Beyond it being mirthless, it's not just the controls (which is a huge problem for me) that bug me, it's the very nature of its design where the idea of taking the slow, sluggish controls from RE2make and importing it over to REm4ke and just making every enemy as fast as you are and sponge-y, while making ammo drops RNG based, and designing the game for careless speedrun, makes it hard for me even just to finish this game once. All of your problems were exactly my problems, too, and I guess I'm just not forgiving as most people are. It's not that this game is "too hard" for me, it's not even the "resource management," but it's the attitude that was applied to this of "let's do what the original did but opposite and that's what makes it modern" that really puts me off. Frantic doesn't always mean fun, and that's all I just found this game was geared to do. Induce a frantic situation so you can play it the way it wants you to play it: by holding forward until you reach the door at the other end of the room, or until a timer winds down.
