  • Back when RVD made his AEW in-ring debut against Jack Perry, Jim Cornette was curious regarding the logistics of RVD's signature move The Rolling Thunder. RVD touches upon that, but also goes into full detail about wrestling moves that aggravate him.

    Petey Williams is the only one who should have done the Canadian Destroyer

    • @0newingedcrow

      AMEN! I feel so bad for him because he was the originator of the move (as far as I know), when he did it it was special, and he respected it because nobody kicked out of it. All the people he worked with were good enough to not tell everyone how it was done, but once word got out, now the glory days of Petey Williams' original finisher are gone. It still looked believable enough too because he not only worked on the move long enough before debuting it, but also because you only saw the one at the end of the match, and not 5 from every member of the match, taking turns running into an opponent, only for each of them to kick out at 2.

    The CD makes more sense if you hit it like a sunset flip because that seems at least a bit more realistic , while jumping down from the second rope to deliver it makes it seem like the ring is a trampoline giving you the bounce to do it .
    And I never saw anything wrong with the rolling thunder ! That seems like straight up the most ferocious building of momentum you can get into a flipping forward senton deal . I mean as wrestling fans we got o suspend our disbelief a little or the basic irish whip would seem unreal in a way .

    Rob hit the nail on the head here. I love cool highflying wrestlers like RVD, Rey Mysterio, Jeff Hardy, etc. But all those guys gave you the feeling that they were still FIGHTING to win the match.
    A lot of today’s wrestling, you can clearly tell the guys are working together to try to put on the coolest spot. It’s like watching a dance routine, they’re cooperating with each other so much.

    I feel the same way about the buckshot lariat, that flip over the top rope does nothing for the momentum of the move it just looks ridiculous to me

    • @rjuniverse7289
      @rjuniverse7289 Месяц назад +2

      Yes, if it could be done like flip and lariat without landing the legs on the ground, like a normal springboard clothesline or aj styles does with his phenomenonal forearm where they hit before they land, then it would make sense as we could assume that the flip and the gravity gave the momentum. But when you stand on your legs after the flip, just before giving the lariat, the momentum is all gone so it would have as much impact as the nomral lariat.

    • @GermanyJerseyShore
      @GermanyJerseyShore 25 дней назад +1

      @rjuniverse7289 Buckshot Lariat is such a lame finisher, dude should just put his own spin on the Clothesline from Hell
      The only time I can see the Buckshot working is rarely and when its unexpected. Hangman gets killed ringside in some type of multiman match, the heel is brutalizing someone in the ring and is in the middle of celebrating before going for a Jericho troll type pin cause dude has been obliterated
      Keep Hangman off camera and then all you see is a flash of motion, camera moves to see him mid flip in and then the Lariat to win the match
      It should be an RKO/SCM Out of Nowhere type move where he does it from different scenarios but the move itself is just a Lariat..the Buckshot label is him hitting in unorthodox ways out of desperation, urgency, or Fighting Spirit and getting the win or causing an upset..the unconventional and unexpected position from where he hits it is what makes it a rare Super Finisher version of it
      In regular matches hed just kick ass, maybe hit the ropes for momentum and theatrics, but end it with a typical brutal Lariat

    • @ChanJENI
      @ChanJENI 19 дней назад

      It works conceptually if you imagine the sender planting their feet while maintaining their upper body momentum. The flip, then, is bringing the upper body up to a speed that wouldn't be achievable just from running.
      Unfortunately, that just isn't how it works in practice, and the act of landing and planting brings the upper body to a near stand-still.

  • @thisisevan1
    @thisisevan1 Месяц назад +5

    Don't like the Canadian Destroyer at all, but it looks better when it's done starting from the middle rope because the wrestler giving it is providing more of their momentum into the move, than doing it simply from a standing position, squat down, and flip over, which always looks silly.
    The Spanish Fly however, is absolutely ridiculous, abhorrent and completely indefensible.

    It’s hard to do a Canadian destroyer from standing perfectly still. You can’t just bend your knees and jump, you have to do a mini-hop first to build up some momentum, a lot of the time. That’s the way Petey Williams usually did it. The ‘jumping from second rope’ thing is kinda stupid, but it’s supposed to be in that same vein, an initial jump to increase the bounce for the second one, the actual destroyer part, and I suppose jumping from the rope is meant to give you even more bounce, somehow 🤷‍♂️

  • @DoneRandomLee

    So the destroyer rob was talking about is the Panama sunrise version which yeah I hate. I am fine with the classic version Petey Williams did but if you are jumping ass first to the back of someone's neck they should drop to the floor rather than do a backflip. On the rolling thunder my three ideas was always 1 it is rvd, he wants to do cool looking things and just show off. 2 it is to assure you don't over shoot it. And 3 it was to hide how far he was. Because you may be able to judge by the steps but with a roll it is harder to judge. Personally the rolling thunder is a better live experience because seeing it live it looks great with the build up and how much moving parts is happening. I guess it is similar to the great muta's flashing elbow with it just looking more spectacular than just a normal elbow drop

    Weird to hear Rob kind of admit he 'ruined' wrestling (inadvertently). Not so much the cooperation needed to do complex moves but more just the idea of doing cool moves and getting all your shit in. Rob's run in ECW really inspired that mindset in many of today's indyrrific wrestlers who never learn to do anything else unless they end up in WWE and are forced to adapt.

  • @Lunacorva
    @Lunacorva 24 дня назад

    Wrestling since the beginning has always had these weird little idosyncracies in how physics seems to work in a match vs real life such as the Irish Whip, and the Canadian Destroyer is nothing new. I agree that the middle rope bounce seems weird, but on a second look, I think that, much like how one wrestler pushes his opponent against the ropes before sending them running off with a whip, the jump off the second rope "Loads" the move.
    It quickly compresess the opponent's spine down into a crouch so the opponent becomes like a coiled spring. When they spring back up, the attacker takes that energy and uses it to throw them into the destroyer.
    Does that follow real world physics? No, but again, neither does the Irish whip and the two operate on similar principles.
