  • Here's some samples of Bay Area Strutting and routine moves by the Legendary PopTart (Demons of the Mind; PT-3000)
See www.brsaa.com for more on POPTART and OTHER STRUTTING / STRUTTER greats!
PopTart had himself filmed in this fashion to show some exercises in strutting routine motion. You will see some examples of FILLMORE as well. THANK YOU POPTART!!
Enjoy. Please play over and over so you can practice to.
The quality on the original footage is so much better and you can feel the explosive hits, but unfortunately that filesize was way too large to upload. So had to compress.
But be on the lookout, more great surprises are coming.

Close Encounters of the Funkiest Kind (San Fran) were the MASTERS at Strutting/Fillmore and had the MOST INTRICATE and AMAZING ROUTINES EVER. When seen live & in person, your jaw would just DROP to the floor because of how advanced they were. The only vid out with them now does NO justice. You HAD to have seen them in the 70's to know. I was there and saw them a number of times doing TransEurope Express & FIRE. The talent shows & performance is what it was all about.
    CEFK IS B.R.S. family.

...oh and to be very clear, just because I'm not "offended," doesn't mean I agree with what you are saying.
POPTART is and always has been one of the most incredible dancers of this type since WAY WAY BACK in the days and continues to be a positive force in keeping this dance we love so much ALIVE and never to be forgotten.

This is mostly the "group moves" portion of strutting. What you're seeing here are moves specifically designed for 3 or 4 people to do in a group. There are a couple'a moments where he does some Fillmore, though, but mostly this is routine stuff.
    This came WAY before tutting.

@iurivaz1994 Strutting is a Bay Area dance style that preceded popping. I believe they called it boogaloo across the bay in Oakland, Berkeley, etc. I was born in SF but grew up in Daly City and we called it strutting. It's basically a more fluid style of dance minus the tuts, ticking, and hard hits associated with early 80s popping. We weren't too familiar with the Fillmore style cuz that wasn't our hood.

Not offended at all but a little surprised that someone from the early days confuses what the EB's (who I have MUCH respect for) do with what is shown here.
I was around in SF when strutting/Fillmore was first out in the 70's and just appreciate the genius behind the dance by ALL the original pioneers. Thanks for watching and keep on dancin!

I like the oompa-loompa/charlie in the chocolate factory look, that makes a sic costume! looks like it is going to make a good routine too.

Bless you for being sooo lucky to have caught it so many times.
I grew up with this and didn't get that much in. I was there when the many great ones busted out with strutting at the talent shows. You'd only get ONE show per group a YEAR because they worked hard to get their routines down and on point. We were lucky there were a bunch of groups so we could see it as much.
What we didn't get on stage at a club or show, we'd have to go gunning for on the streets and cut up right there.

Hi Doc!! Is he really dancing to "I Can Understand it" by new birth?? I love that song!!! But i have a question about the music... was filmore inspired by a certain sound/type of soul/funk music... and are there orginal SONGS that sparked the dance that you could tell me about or give names to? :) Thank You so much.

That vertical wipe after each move is really annoying and ruins the video.

Bonus, re: the overall term for the dance...
I'm almost 40. From the bay. One thng that frustrates me is how peple try to label different styls as if they wer a different dance. I had a brief exchange with DocLock becuz thez kids today actualy confuse me bcuz its all 1 dance.
Wen I was comng up the dance was called Boogalooing or strutting. And the terms were interchangeable evn tho we knew that there was a "struttng" style also. "Popping" was NOT an umbrella term bak thn. Popping was a styl.

Fillmore is like a "feeling" something more done when doing strutting in "freestyling solo."
What PopTart is doing here is more a breakdown of strutting/stepping "routine" movements so folks can get an understanding of the basics to this dance.
Just like boogaloo popping has it's side-to-side "Fresno" hits, strutting had its own ROUTINE steps that we all had to follow in order to connect with our fellow dancing team members. Thanks for asking and hope this helps some. Keep on dancin! :)

After watching this I still don't understand what strutting is. All I see is a bunch of random movements with an odd angle that is like filmore. How am I supposed to figure out what those movements actually mean if I don't even get even a 60 second explanation of what the style even is?

  • @DocLock
    @DocLock  15 лет назад

POPTART can do some hard robot, hitting, strutting. His style was one that surpassed many others. Even some of the other great ones still getting down will tell you. Plus he's one humble and cool dude. Always helping people out. He can also kill the floor with old school hiphop. He worked with Hammer back then too.
This is meant to be a breakdown so folks could learn. There are no real tutorials for strutting. Wasn't any back then. Thanks much cause your comments help keep folks aware. :-)

I'm kinda confused. Is this just literally strutting... or is it a mix of styles? I saw hints of Tutting in there. I'm asking because I'm choreographing a piece with some friends for my school, and uh, we're jamming to Slick Dogg's I can Make You Dance... It mentions this dance, I needed to see how it was done. So... yea.

I hear ya loud and clear. There NEEDS to be some of that SAMOAN FUNK up on here (haha & that's coming from a Mexican :D ).
People have GOT to see what that was about because it was truly something else. So many groups were tearing it up back then.
Thanks for checking this out. There will be more stuff coming soon.

  • @DocLock

@NAZA1823 Thanks for the question. The only 60 sec explanation I could give for strutting is "it's the dance the Bay was doing before Popping." Actually that was more like 5 sec. :) All kidding aside, you mentioned Fillmore. That comes from strutting & trust me, not everyone understands that either. Strutting was the 'umbrella' term (tho' we never talked like that back then) to this dance. Fillmore's a freestyle feeling done in strutting. Pls check out the SFSTRUTTER channel for more

so strutting came about earlier than locking did?
