If mhj is gone, you trade back with the falcons, Vikings, broncos or raiders and get a haul while also being able to take bowers or terrion Arnold. I don’t think jj McCarthy is better than Justin Herbert so trading with a division team doesn’t scare me. This chargers team has too many holes (linebacker, corner, receiver, edge, defensive tackle), this will be a 2-3 year process thanks to telesco cap strapping us.
If this makes anybody feel any better, Joe Hortiz has mentioned in interviews, that particularly when it comes to the first round, he rarely ever picks by need, but what the best player available is at the time. So if Marvin Harrison Jr is indeed available when the Chargers are at number 5, I can practically guarantee you they would select him. I think the only possible way the Chargers DON'T stick and pick him, is if suddenly some team below offers a crazy amount of pics to move up to their spot.
Harrison Jr or not I'd still would go with Bowers. I believe he makes more of a team impact by helping with the run, Offensive tackle/TE, and helping protect Herbert

Is MHJ a great prospect? absolutely...but yet again WR is not our priority. Chargers biggest weaknesses in order are DL,OL,TE, CB,LB, WR....In that order. But Ive always been a believer you dont ever need to spend a top 20 pick on a Olineman. There also isnt a DL prospect this year worth using a #5 pick on. So this is where you go to your next biggest need and Bowers at TE is worth a #5 pick because there isnt a TE in college close to him right now and you certainly wont find him in the second round. Great WR's are coming out of college every single year, there just isn't a shortage of them.

This would take so much pressure off of Allen and Herbert, improve our o-line b/c Herbert wouldn't have to wait 3 seconds for someone not wearing #10 to get open and Harbaugh gets his franchise changing player.
