  • Join Kyra and Tony Gardner as they discuss his work creating Daft Punk's iconic helmets. Hear how his team had to pull in a range of specialists from jumbotron technicians, to astronauts and... auto body shops? Once again it is a reminder of Kyra's unconventional childhood since she knew Daft Punk's faces since she was around ten years old, and their helmets were at her dad's work since she was a toddler. The two discuss the creation of the helmet designs and get into some of the changes to their helmets and costumes over the years.
Tune in next month for a deep dive episode on Hocus Pocus!

It's been such a treat to hear Tony speak so fondly about the helmets rather than treating them as 'just another job'. They served as a perfect representation of what the band would become. Tony really gets what the helmets mean to us fans especially with the fan-made replicas, and getting to see the originals on display at certain exhibits in recent years.
With enough research online I've come across the Alterian archives, a great Mixmag video, a few behind the scenes clips uploaded by GotWub, and now this super insightful podcast. I think I speak on behalf of most to say that we would love to better understand everything there is to know from the creative process - detailed circuitry, design drafts, and even present day images of castings and molds.
There's still a lot about the original helmets' construction that remains a mystery, for example - many recreations I see (even one featured in this video) have 8 rows of LEDs for Thomas' visor running off several Maxim 7221 chips, but the real Thomas helmet made by Alterian had 11 rows of LEDs...
I would spend good money on a publication which gives Tony Gardner's fully detailed account on how he assembled the helmets with plenty of never before seen images. As a book, it could be a real collector's piece - both for Daft Punk fans and people with a passion for prop making - What better way to celebrate the upcoming 25th anniversary of the helmets! Couldn't thank you guys enough for talking more about your incredible journey with the robots and hope to hear more soon!!! 🌟

If I’m not mistaken, the microphones are backward… generally the front of the microphone you’d want pointing toward the hosts! Pointing away like this has made it much more roomy sounding and more “echo”.

I hope one day the technology will advance enough to make full synthetic robot versions that do concerts with them being programmed. I think that would be awesome but they both probably wouldn't allow it to become a reality. Kinda like the weird hologram thing that they tried to do with dead artists.

It wouldn’t be the first time the helmets let one or both of them to sit out gigs.
