  • Our 2015 paddle on the Suwannee River from White Springs to the Gulf of Mexico. From November 28th - December 13th we paddled our canoe down the Suwannee River, taking our time and stopping to appreciate the sites and springs along the way. Hop in the cane and join us for a ride down one of America's greatest rivers!

    Thanks for the video, brings back fantastic memories for an old man. I did this trip down the Suwannee in 1954. Put in at Fargo GA just outside the swamp. I was 10 years old and was with about 15-16 other boys from a YMCA camp in Georgia. A truck met us every night along side the river. Hot meal, good night sleep in jungle hammocks to keep us off the ground. Snakes and feral hogs. Breakfast in the morning and a packed lunch and back on the river. We actually started the trip just south of Atlanta GA on the Flint river. And switched rivers in south Georgia. Altogether it was a little over 500 miles in a little under three weeks. Was the adventure of a lifetime for a 10 year old kid.

    I grew up in Gainesville. My Grandfather lived in Old Town (south of Branford) and honeymooned at Ichetucknee Springs around the turn of the last century. On your travels, as you passed under County Road 340 you might have noticed the remains of a early last century ferry landing. Several times in my youth we drove down on one side and honked for the ferrryman to pick us up and take us to the other side. This was a "man powered" ferry having an overhead steel cable running shore-to-shore and fore and aft wooden guides that kept the ferry tethered while the ferryman reached out with a club-like hook, grasped the cable, and hauled back pulling us, the ferry and the car to the other side. He was paid by the State but was tipped with chickens, fish, produce or white lightning by the people he pulled across.

    I lived and grew up at sun springs and hart springs and dove the caves of both as a boy. I have always wanted to make this journey from GA to the Gulf of Mexico and take my time. A dream for retirement. I grew up on the river and learned to love it. I hiked the trails and would swim across the river and back even though I was forbidden to do it. Thanks so much Chris for doing this and sharing it with the rest of us.

    Great trip! I've been dreaming of this river for some time now and I'm ready to go now. Do you recall the water level? I see it was low. Just curious how low?
    Also, have you stopped adventuring?

    • @curtiswhitwam1
      @curtiswhitwam1  2 года назад

      Thanks! I can’t remember what the level was. I just remember that looking into the online advice before the trip, it was just a little above the level of being too low.
      We still go out on adventures! I just haven’t been filming and editing videos for a while.

    Great job I was surprised that the Suwannee actually had a class 3 rapid.......

    • @curtiswhitwam1
      @curtiswhitwam1  7 лет назад +1

      Henry Meguess yeah. It only achieves class 3 status when the water is up. We started in White Springs downstream of Big Shoals. At some point I'd like to paddle the upper section. By the way, check the levels before you go. It should be above 51' in White Springs to avoid having to portage over some of the other Shoals.

    I would LOVE to give your video a thumbs up and a BIG Like, but alas I cannot. Your snorkeling i to some of the caves prevents me from it. I had a friend get lost scuba diving in a cave. He ran out of air & died in the cave. He became separated from the group and was only feet from the spare bottles when he died. As a scuba instructor I cannot “Like” those moments in the video. But the rest is beyond wonderful. I cannot wait to complete the journey myself

    great video. I have a question and you guys seem like the right people to ask. We are considering buying a house on the Swanee river and I am wondering how much boar traffic there is? It would be a winter vacation house and I would hate to spend a huge amount of money and have boat screaming up and down the river all day. we were looking not near the coast but further inland. thanks

    • @curtiswhitwam1
      @curtiswhitwam1  3 года назад

      We didn’t see too much power boat traffic until we got closer to the coast. Farther upstream there are shoals and during lower water, motorboats have a harder time traveling on the river. If I remember right, the last shoal we passed was before Dowling Park. Of course, during high water, this could change. I’d be more on the lookout for land that won’t flood during high water and building accordingly.

  • @Dman9fp

    Nioce. I could easily spend 30 minutes alone just puffing a cigar on any part of the Suwannee, yet somehow a video can be made of highlights kayaking the majority of it apparently. Even if one had a 50 foot tv screen, nothing matches being actually on or next to this grand river in my home state. Peace, great job on the comprehensive video tho, seriously

    Mr. Whitwam - I have watched many of your videos so I 'think' I know that you use a Sony 4K camera with either the 33' case or the 197' case. Since it does not appear that the 197' case would pick up audio, am I correct in assuming that you use the 33' case for just in case protection for your surface video since you have real time commentary? Also, What is the name of your video editing software? I'm leaving Suwannee Sills December 2nd for the town of Suwannee. While I don't expect my trip to edit out as professionally as yours did, I would like for it to look good enough to save to media and show friends. Thank you in advance for your reply.

    • @curtiswhitwam1
      @curtiswhitwam1  6 лет назад

      +Sabaka8417 Thanks for watching and glad you've enjoyed the videos. I was using the standard case that the camera came with for most of the surface shots. If I felt reasonably safe that it wasn't going to get wet (on land), I was just filming without the case on. The audio is affected by the case but it still works.
      For underwater shots I was using the dive door housing. I decided that I didn't want to trust the "waterproof" standard housing for anything but the accidental splash.

      Mr. Whitwam - thank you for your reply regarding camera cases and well wishes. Question from my first post? what is the name of the editing software that you use for your videos or do you have it done professionally?

    • @curtiswhitwam1
      @curtiswhitwam1  6 лет назад

      +Sabaka8417 oh yeah, sorry I missed that. I use IMovie and do all of my editing on my phone. This way if I am on a long trip, I can edit if I have battery power and I can upload when I get wifi. The software is simple and user friendly. But, it's limited in what you can do with it. Works for me so far.

      We found it at the Suwannee River Rendezvous during our trip. At the beginning we were using a boat ramp map that had mileage as well as what land was public.
      I think that the map is put out by the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail (a State .org.)

  • @orod750

    How did you plan for this? Is there a book or website that tells you what's along the river, like the camp sites, state parks ect.. This looks like a blast by the way!!

    • @curtiswhitwam1
      @curtiswhitwam1  7 лет назад +1

      orod750 It was a blast! There's one link in the description to the wilderness trail site. Here's another. This is a good place to start. You'll also want to check up on river levels before you go. Too low and you'll have portages, too high and less backcountry camping options. But we stayed in 'designated' camping each night mostly so that wasn't an issue. www.srwmd.state.fl.us/documentcenter/home/view/31
