I believe this was the guitar Kirk used for Fade to Black and Sanitarium on the Damaged Justice tour, you can see it on the Seattle 89 performances. It’s absolutely insane that you were able to get an opportunity to play it!

A little Les Paul/SG correction: Les Paul didn't "hate" the new body shape of the LP guitars; Les preferred the classic single cut shape because it felt more sturdy. Les' name was removed after 1963 due to his contract ending with Gibson while he was in mid divorce with Mary Ford (re-signing with Gibson would only complicate the divorce). In 1964, the new LP guitars got the new name "SG", then when Les came back on board with Gibson in 1968, the demand for the single cut was gaining momentum and they re-released it with Les' name on it again. However, the "SG" was so popular by that time with it's own fan base, they kept the SG as a stand alone guitar and the rest is history. Fun fact: The 1961 Les Paul (SG body shape) is THE ONLY Gibson guitar that has been produced every single year since it's inception!!!!!!

I'm in the camp of thinking that frets, while not as expendable as strings they are a consumable playing surface that is designed to be replaced.

Pretty hard to tell but during the solo after the first chorus in Sanitarium we get a good shot of the guitar. The pickups and the knobs are different and in certain shots the tuners look a little too shiny to be the same guitar. Sure they had full time techs at their Beck and call but the big question is the frets. I don’t know Kirk but at the time I’m not sure he would’ve used a 1969 fretless wonder out on tour. Of course he has no problems doing it now. Props if he did. Low fret guitars are very hard to play.

I found my perfect guitar a few years ago when I saw Herman Li's signature at a local guitar shop, I wanted to try it bc of how thin the body was and the fact that it was a Floyd Rose trem system appealed to me than the price at the time was $799, not cheap by any means but honestly for a signature model that checked all the boxes for me was huge. It's been my main guitar since 2016, I also use an Ibanez Jem and everytime I go from the Egen to the Jem it feels like I'm picking up a boulder lol the weight difference is so significant!

68 was pretty much on par with the 50s and 60 led Paul being an exact copy, in 69 is when things changed like construction of the guitar and such. That's why 68 Les Paul guitars are much more valuable than the 69 model year along with 68 also having a unique error in which some were made with the crown on the head stock veneer instead of the silk screen Les Paul Model.

    • @devilsguitaristmusic
      @devilsguitaristmusic Год назад +2

But it's the Bursts that are so valuable and desired, not the Customs. They are different guitars. And even though the Custom was originally more expensive, they are worth significantly less than the Bursts today. Not that any of it really matters. There were some great LPs made from 58-60, some great ones in 68, and some great ones today. The biggest differences are rarity, desirability, and history.

    • @agcacustoms2852

@@devilsguitaristmusic the burst are only valuable cause of the player who used them and the low production number compared to the previous years. @@agcacustoms2852 I agree. If Clapton/Beck/Allman/Richards/Page had used 57 Goldtops to record their most famous albums at the time, we'd all be gushing about the Goldtop today. Bursts aren't any more special than the other LP models of the time, it just so happens that certain players happened to play them on albums which became legendary. That's it, imho.

@@Nghilifa the burst are literally the same guitars as the 58-60 burst just having less figured tops or having multi pieces tops at times. It was only halfway through 58 that they started making the burst which the first half being gold tops. They certainly weren’t magic just guitars that were cheap at the time since no one wanted them and since one guy played it and someone else liked it it stuck.

@@agcacustoms2852 The bursts had (and still have) maple tops though, the body of the custom was all mahogany, the fretboard was also made out of ebony instead of rosewood. That said, they're mostly identical (I don't buy into the whole tonewood nonsense).

Kirk had an identical ESP same color and block inlays, it was for sale a few years ago.

I'd be very surprised if this Custom were an all Mahogany body. Great video.

Just a plain old black Les Paul custom is still in my top three favorite guitars.. I mean Les Paul customs are my favorite guitar it's literally just the finish that puts it in three although I always used to be my first favorite you really can't go wrong with a black Les Paul custom

Love your videos, but man I hate that story about Les Paul being disgusted by the SG body shape. He appeared on several promotional pics with it too! I'm certain that the story about "hey, I'm getting a divorce so we need to end the contract Gibson, so I don't want that too split in half" makes much more sense.

There is also a story that his promotional contract had expired and he was upset about the unauthorised use of his name. The divorce story sounds the most plausible thou.

Thanks for sharing this piece of Metallica history! I’m guessing the reason why that ESP strat copy went for so much is because it was used in Metallica‘s first music video.. which is a pretty big deal since they refused to make any up until that point!

When the Les Paul Custom was Reissued in 1968 they added a maple top to it so it should have a maple cap. That's what makes the 68 Reissues different to the 57 reissues you can get today.

So as a metal player usually we like jumbo frets.. and I do like jumbo frets but I have played fretless wonders before and honestly there's something about them that are really fun to play on
