    Stewart Copeland's studio work and his live drumming from The Police Era is some of the most legendary drumming ever recorded, it inspired an entire new generation of drummers, everyone in the drumming world knows the name Stewart Copeland whether they care to or not, one of the top five drummers ever for me personally

This must ne sarcasm , if so then I apologize , but two things that was not was boring and undynamic.

    • @BillyTwoSquirrels
      @BillyTwoSquirrels 6 лет назад +18

      So you equate Peart's 40 year career as one of the most respected drummers in rock music with that of a comedian that became famous and flamed out in a 3 - 4 year span and became a pariah in the entertainment industry? All Dice did was shock - he was a one note comedian. It was funny on the first listen but didn't resonate afterwards. I don't see why you would find the two careers to be analogous. If you aren't a Peart fan, that's fine. I am. I am also a fan of a lot of other drummers too, including Copeland.

      Neil was technically better.. but just did not have the power or wildness that comes from Stewart.. which is why NP is a highly respected drummer but will never achieve the same energy level that SC has@@samirait-kaci-gf3bn and I stress: judging musicians technique is always subjective.
      Now Vinnie on he other hand: better technique and close to the same energy level and wildness (kind of).. again.. subjecive :-)

    • @ScottMasson
      @ScottMasson 5 месяцев назад

      @@HR2635 truth. Neil was great for that “machine-like” precision, but definitely lacked spontaneity, swing, and feel. I really appreciate his robotic vibe in its own way, but I’d rather be in a band with a drummer that makes me wanna dance a bit.
      Neil and the other guys in Rush were huge fans of The Police, which almost proves the point that Stewart kicks a ton of ass.

    • @ScottMasson
      @ScottMasson 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@samirait-kaci-gf3bn totally. 💯 I love Neil Peart, but once I learned how to play along with Rush records, I had to spend a while relearning how to not be so uptight or brain-heavy on the drums. I had to basically relearn how to groove and not “think” so much while playing. 😆

    I'm reading the comments, and seeing a lot of comments along the lines of "Drummer ___________ is better than Copeland".
    Music is not a contest. If you get too hung up on the skills of player X vs player Y, you may miss the musicallity of what is being played.
    PS. There are many player who are "better" than Stew.... He'll be the first to say it. That said, his approach to music is unique. His work with the Police, and after (there is some fun stuff on the Animallogic CD's that's great) stands up against so much that has come after. There may be players with more skill, but there is only one Stewart Copeland!

    • @sonicfrogdotnet
      @sonicfrogdotnet 9 лет назад +21

      One thing that he does that is so interesting, is that he rarely plays two coresponding measures the same.... He'll do odd little things on the toms or cymbals or crashes in each that makes the feel so vibrant and alive! He always said "Every Breath" was one of the hardest songs for him to play because he had to keep everything extremely straight.
      PS. I'm actually the "Sting" guy in a Police trib band. Our drummer really has the "Stew" feel of things. If you listen to other trib bands on RUclips, you'll find most of the drummers miss the mark because they get too busy with the kick drum, especially if they use a dual kick, which just about everyone uses these days. Stew played a single, and it was the most contant thing about his playing.

A style, character, idiosyncrasies that create the Perts, Bruford, Copelands, Portnoys, Joe Jones, Moons, Harrison, Palmers, Alvin Jones, Roaches, Blakely...the names go on and on and only in the West. It never ceases to amaze me how the art of drum set playing never sounds the same but always new and innovative. Whether it is w just a few drums or an armada of drums......

    Speaking as an ex pro drummer, I’ve always been drawn to two things, style & sound. Hence my top three drummers are Ringo, Bonzo
    & Stewart Copeland. All three are so distinctive , not better or best but highly individualistic. It’s not easy ( especially today) to have
    Your own drum sound & a unique way of playing.

    Reading all the comparisons...they are futile. There are so many great drummers out there, all amazing in their own way. Billy Cobham, Alphonse Mouzon, Terry Bozio, Aynsley Dunbar, Phil Collins, Ian Paice, Ron Howden, Cindy Blackman Santana.....So I suggest just enjoy and don't trouble yourself setting up...top 10 lists. There is no such thing IMO.

  • @JaseWolf

    If you think a great drummer is someone who is waving their arms all over the place, seriously, check Stewart Copeland out!! THAT is how you play the drums! You let your wrists and the sticks themselves mostly do the work. The rest of your arms you do not need to wave around like a mad man 99% of the time. It will only unnecessarily tire you out.

      I think it has less to do with the drumming itself and more with showmanship. Most of the people who wave their arms around like crazy have to do that for an entire show and still maintain a tight rhythm...that's some serious endurance and focus, regardless of their musical ability.

    I just read an interview with him where he said this was maybe the second time he has ever done a drum solo. Who woulda thunk it. In the interview he talks about how he gives Rush's Neil Peart a buddy of his a hard time about Pearts solo's.I guess for the most part Copeland is anti solo or at least its not what he really likes to do. Talked about how he and Peart are opposites,Peart plays well rehearsed figures while Stewart tends to wing it with less of a plan. Two greats that deliver the goods
