John, my buddy (52) is going through a nasty divorce after decades. He’s a good looking successful guy who’s been beaten down by his ungrateful, soon to be ex, thus let his style go. This is a dude who’s done everything right and got zero thanks nor respect in return. I turned him onto your channel and it’s helping him get himself back immensely-from styling, confidence, everything. He and I talk (deep convos) every other day, he mentions digging/relating to your channel A LOT. He’s a new sub. Keep up the great work helping men be their best selves!

It’s a shame when men tolerate even one second of disrespect from a woman. If you have 3 young children then you are in a tough spot but if you can avoid damage to the kids get out. There are a million divorced and single women out there and many younger looking for love. If you are a decent looking guy you can play the field all day and night.

I have several watches in my collection, including three I have owned for more than 40 years. Most prized is my late father's gold J W Benson watch from 1972. The combined value of my collection is probably less than $2,000, but they are are all very different and I wear them according to the specific occasion and my mood on the day. For me, a watch isn't just a functional timepiece, each one holds a very special memory. And for me, that is their true value.

On the watch topic… I am very into watches and “high horology” but not to be flashy. The watches I own are not watches that the typical person would recognize. It’s not for them, it’s for me. I do think a nice watch is very different than an outfit etc. It’s something you will wear while making memories with the people closest to you. You don’t need to spend a fortune, but finding a watch that speaks to you is worth it. My 2 cents.

An interesting conversation. So here is my view. Apart from my wedding ring, my wristwatch is my only other piece of jewellery. Such it is with all (proper) gentlemen. Hence, it is not a 'tool' as such, but an expression of my personality. Yet note, I state 'personality', not income or wealth.
Of course, being interested in watches means that I am first to spot the watches, (the only jewellery other than the - possible - ring), that the male person opposite me wears. Do I judge them for it? Well "yes" and "no." Firstly, I am very much aware of Nick Hornby's book 'High Fidelity'. The characters in the record shop judge people by their selection of music. At the denouement of the book the leading character comes to realise this is completely false way of judging anybody. On the one hand, individual tastes change through life, and secondly, to many wonderful people, music is not important. Same goes for watches, or cars, or clothes, etc, etc.
Secondly, when I see somebody wearing, say, a Rolex of any kind, it tells me that they have money but no interest in watches. Obviously, I except vintage Rolex's from this categorisation. Do bear in mind that Rolex sell 1.2 million watches per year. They sell a third of Swiss wristwatches. Saying a Rolex is 'select' is like saying that a Mercedes is 'select' - yet, with regard to the latter, every Egyptian taxi driver has one. Likewise with Rolex. Still a good product, of course, but really the triumph of marketing over finished goods.
So, from personal experience, I have never found a (modern) Rolex owner who was worth talking to about horology.
Yet if someone has a Baltic chronograph, or a Tissot PRX, or a Christopher Ward, or an Oris, or a vintage watch of any kind,...... they are worthy of a conversation about watches. Still, it does not make them a worthy, wealthy or interesting person. It just means that they happen to care about watches.

Watches are the intersection of science, engineering, design, and history. Get to know watches then pick something that you feel comfortable and proud to wear. It does not need to be expensive but it will say something about who you are and what you value. It is the only universally accepted men's accessory and does get noticed. If you just don't care about watches then an apple watch is better than no watch, and no watch is better than an embarrassing watch.

It is 1/3 lighter than steel, it is much thinner than automatic watches, and has a sapphire crystal for $300 to $350. Perhaps it is worth a whole video. I agree that you don't "need" a Rolex watch, and your Seiko is a solid choice. However, it is also true you also don't "need" a watch at all. Your phone tells more accurate time than any mechanical or quartz watch ever could. So why wear one? It is because of the way you feel about them, and the message you are trying to send with them. Any quartz Invicta may look great to you, and it tells the time just fine, but it also may not convey the message you want to send. Worth a discussion at any rate.

The cross body bag is great for warmer months when you don't have access to coat pockets. I used to carry a backpack or messenger bag but I only save those for when I need to carry a lot of things like camera, laptop etc. The cross body is great for glasses, pen, notepad, phone charger, and anything else small.

I agree to a certain point 50k or more for a watch is a bit over. Most are not the best looking even over that price. Great you wear a 100k watch but it doesn't look elegant at all just screams. And yes that is my personal opinion. I do wear a Longines conquest/seiko 5 and a longines master collection. But that is the max I want to pay for a watch. Cars, yes give me that more tiny fiat 500 for in the city. Easy to park etc. Or even use my cargo bike to get around and taking the kids with me. But indeed a nice car is also great.

needed the smallest cross-body (patagonia blackhole mini) to carry phone, wallet, keys, passport and some papers which I couldn't fit into pockets. Not as a "fashion statement" (which is not), but instead of lugging a backpack or bag for just those things. Also, wearing it cross-chest (it kind of slides under arm) helps in high traffic areas, pickpocket-wise, and also incredibly helpful in airports and airplanes - to have the "valuables" in one thing which is "on me" all the time. It easily stays under jackets, sweaters or whatever, so not very noticeable either. Definitely underrated :)

I kind of agree/disagree on the watches. I'll admit I'm very much into the watch hobby and enjoy the big brands along with the not so big brands. If you enjoy it on your wrist and it makes you feel good, then you should wear it. Rolex or Seiko, who are we to judge? I think we can all agree, the most important thing is that you wear some sort of "real" watch and not an iPhone on your wrist!!

Watches definitely do not have to break the bank to be enjoyable AND look classy. Sticking with fairly classic designs over fashion watches is key, regardless of if they are quartz or automatic. Some additional suggestions under $1K
    Seiko
-Seiko 5 SRPK87/89/91 - clean and good for the smaller wrist
-Seiko 5 SSK001/SSK003 - keep track of multiple time zones
-Seiko 5 diver style - in addition to the SRPK22 suggested, SRPD51 & SRPD55 (SRPK29 for smaller wrists)
    -Seiko Presage Cocktail time - SRPB77, SRPB41, SRPB43, SRPE43
    -Seiko Prospex Alpinist - SPB155, SPB243
-Seiko Prospex solar diver - SNE585 for smaller wrists/preferences, or SNE589 for bigger wrists
    Tissot
-Take your pick from the PRX line in quartz or Powermatic 80 for a bit of a more trendy, yet still classic vibe
-Gentleman is a great classic that in my opinion will never look out of style
    Orient
    -Bambino (38 or 40.5mm)
-Kamasu or Kanno divers, depending on wrist size/preference
    Citizen
-Tsuyosa (automatic), or Tsuyosa Small Seconds for a more elevated version
-Zenshin Three Hand (solar quartz), Zenshin Mechanical (automatic), or Zenshin Chrono
    Hamilton
-Khaki Field Auto 38 or 42mm
    -Murph 38 or 42
    Bulova Jet Star 96B401
    Christopher Ward -
    -C63 Valour
    -C63 Sealander
For Micro brands, try the following (just some highlights/standouts, not an exhaustive list):
Lorier - pretty much anything, though they lean toward small to average wrist sized watches.
    Astor+Banks - Fortitude Pro
    Brew - Retrograph or Metric
Baltic - Aquascaphe, Hermetique, or HMS
    Nodus - Sector Sport
    Traska - Commuter, Summiteer

I honestly don't wear the sneakers nearly as much as the boots. I live in a cowboy town, so sneakers are badly out of context here and I'd look socially obtuse (or, far worse, like a tourist) wearing them. I wear the sneakers when I go to Vegas, Phoenix and Mexico, though.

Re. watches, You identified the 'problem' immediately' (other people saying blah blah blah), then chose to immediately ignore it!
Rolex is an odd thing to call a 'fashion' item being as they do not really change over decades.
You are all over the place on so much that you have said about watches.
Your Seiko is not only not a Rolex, or Omega, or a Patek..........Its also not Gold, or a luxury watch (luxury is a super subjective term, but it just isn't) ; )
A luxury watch (which is not a fashion item remember) is probably the one thing a guy should pay the most attention to, and is certainly not overrated in terms of an over 40's man.

  • @karlr750

I think the watch snobbery may originate from a basic misunderstanding about watch brands. There are good quality affordable watches (Seiko, Citizen, Tissot, Seagull, Casio, etc.) where the consumer is getting a lot of quality for the price … even if the watch has a quartz movement.
On the other hand, there are a lot of fashion watches (Fossil, MVMT, Daniel Wellington, etc.) that have a *cheap* quartz movement, and the brand charges a "low price" of $100-$300 for a watch that should cost $20-$50. There's a lot of disdain (among enthusiasts) for watches that are simultaneously cheap *and overpriced.*
If a person has just enough knowledge about watches to be dangerous, they may fall into the mindset where they lump all inexpensive watches together. And as you point out, there are lots of good, affordable watches out there.

I'm glad you brought up the murse because I've been puzzled by how much of it I'm seeing lately. How much stuff are you actually carrying that you need more than your pockets on a daily basis? Wallet, keys, handkerchief, occasionally a lip balm in the winter. I can see if you're traveling or hiking or do some specific task that requires the need for other stuff but day to day seems excessive. But hey, to each his own.
I'm glad you mentioned luxury watches. I'm a huge fan of G-Shock and have quite a few to go for just about any occasion and they all get compliments whenever I wear them. A couple were more on the expensive side but nowhere near Rolex, Omega, PK, etc. territory, and the best part - I never have to worry about them breaking because there's a good chance I'll break before the watches do.

I agree with most of this list.
I have an interesting overrated item, more specifically fabric, to add: cashmere. In my opinion cashmere in menswear is overrated, and here's why:
    1. It's not very warm. Sheep's wool and alpaca wool are much warmer at the same weight than cashmere.
    2. The softness of cashmere can be achieved with a much cheaper silk and cotton blend. A 50/50 cotton/silk blend is just as soft as cashmere, and will likely cost less.
    3. It's not durable. It pills, wears down from friction, and tears much more easily than sheep's wool. Also, it's more attractive to moths.

The ones ive grown to like are the ones that look like a small backpack with one strap. I wear it on my back. I drive for a living, got tired of losing headphones, glasses and the like in the truck seats. But since i carry ot anyway, might as well have a stylish one. Coach makes some beautiful, clean designs with fantastic leather that dont break the bank.
Re the luxury watch point, i have a pair of Cartier watches that i absolutely love and a Rolex thats going up for sale. Though, i have a Movado (and its quartz) that I spent less than $500 on and wear it more than the others combined. Its a sharp looking, dependable watch. My styles went to the above named companies as well as Military PX stores and other bargain stores. The only difference in the garments that I was responsible for and those that went to the high fashion stores was the LABEL - my styles were made in the same factory, by the same people with the same material as the high fashion garments, the only difference was the label and, of course, the price.

We may not have thought of them as luxury at the time, but knew that they were out of reach due to price. The reality for many of us is - is that there is something special about a high quality time piece. A good wrist watch is something we can wear at all times and have with us. There is pride in ownership for something that is “state of the art” - and since you are an owner of an Omega and Tudor I see that you have felt the same. I had a great Seiko quartz divers watch which I wore proudly for 20 years and was heartbroken when it finally failed. It was even a bit on the gimmicky side, with with a multifunction window - the sort of watch I saw a critic snidely describe as "suitable for timing underwater races". As it happened, timing things underwater, and in multiple time zones, was pretty important to me, so I used all the functions it had to offer! It was perfect for my lifestyle and thus not actually gimmicky at all.
My newer watch is an entry-level luxury watch (TAG Heuer Aquaracer) which is a perfect compromise for me. I still need to time things underwater and travel in all kinds of sketchy places, so it would be insanity for me to walk around with a $20,000 Rolex showpiece - I would worry about it every day, so what would be the pleasure in that? My TAG is nice enough to make me feel good when dressing up, but not so expensive that I worry about losing or damaging it.

Cannot agree more on watches. I wore several Rolexes over several years loaned to me. I discovered that no one cares but other people that have Rolexes et al. I get if it is a family heirloom. But a brand new $10,000 watch that does not keep time as well as $300 Seiko (also my choice). I have accepted the guidance that I have to have a non-sport watch, but that was grudgingly because my $100 Garmin does everything.
Pushing back on those sneakers. Is that a CA thing? As a kid, it was no street shoes on the gym floor. The corollary is also true: no gym shoes on the street (unless running). No reason exists why leather shoes cannot be as comfortable as trainers (the UK term). That term is more appropriate and a good reminder of their purpose.

If two people meet and they’re both wearing A Lange & Sohne watches they’re going to automatically assume they’re successful in their field and will strike up an open conversation looking to make something happen…… this has happened personally dozens of times

I've had a sekonda for quite a while. A great watch for an extremely affordable price!

seiko is not an average brand at all. top 10 brands by sale (if not top 5), and widely considered "punching above their weight". Good stuff with the rest :)

I agreed with everything you said except for the watches to me is an investment thing not for styling or wear it for a period of time and forget about it. Also John, Sieko is a great watch brand made in Japan com’on brother 😂

Hold on there, Sparky. I lived in Germany from 1980 to 1983, and that is when I said the men carried their personal items. Now, I agree with the logo garments as an advertised board. The military soles on the shoes are also too much for me. Keep up the great work luv the channel.🥰

The fanny pack, (bum bag in the UK), is useful when you are abroad, places where you should expect your pocket to be picked, more useful still when it's right in front of you. And in some museums and similar, you would be expected to leave your backpack in the cloakroom. It should be possible to put a little waterproof in a larger shoulder bag, for when you're in the UK or the Irish Republic.
I have a nice automatic watch with a skeleton face, lovely-looking, cost £1 from Ebay (and £5 p&p), it gains a minute a week, but I usually use an electronic watch for its blood sugar monitoring. Health before wealth.

Agree on crossbody bags but I had to eat my own words as running around a city on a motorcycle my sling has been way more comfortable than a back pack

Great video! 👍🏿 short and to the point on your opinions, I especially agree with the watches I have been looking at Seiko and Citizens watches to wear, which look and feel nice. Keep up great work, and good luck on your side project! 👏🏿👏🏿🙌🏿

For me, wearing overt Lux brands is gauche. "Look what i can afford" is gross in my probably narrow minded opinion. Quality clothing doesn't have to be ostentatious. And if one's budget doesnt allow for high quality clothing, you can still look great (and feel great) on a much smaller budget. I watched your video on polished casual and i could absolutely put similar outfits together for almost no money. Knowing how to present yourself properly is worth more than being able to afford a $1000 tee shirt. Love the content, my friend 🔥
