We have come back along to the village of Limekilns, on the River Forth and Fife Coastal Path - the coast here is varied; the sand beach gives way to a muddy harbour, that stretches far out into the river bed. The views are expansive, reaching from Kincardine (in the west) to the Queensferry Crossing, just outside Edinburgh (to the east)!
Join us finding everything from the bizarre, the fascinating and the treasured! Our finds range from what looks like a glass jaw - it can't be, can it? An extremely old bottle neck - is it an onion bottle? Enough spark plugs to seriously consider a spark-plug chess set! Yes, we're serious, but we still need a few pieces! :D Among the host of other great sea glass, pottery shards and buttons galore, we find one very special wee jar...
A small jar, it looks much like an ink bottle, but it is not... The word ISINGLASS is embossed on the bottom of the bottle... After a search through the archives, its so satisfying to find old Victorian Adverts / advertising for this once essential item for the modern kitchen or brewer! Isinglass, or fish glue, was manufactured from the swim bladders of sturgeon and other fish.
Isinglass holds an important role of the story of modern invention where many products were synthesized from animal products before becoming replaced by non-biological compounds. Isinglass served many functions - it was used as a glue, a fining agent in brewing, a preservative for eggs, prior to pasteurization, and prior to the invention of gelatin, it was a setting agent in confectionery, jellies, cakes and the like! Its a truly remarkable range of uses! These days it is still an important substance, used in brewing and in historically accurate restoration projects.
To add to the adventure of a fun day out - we have a few really tricky games of 'Can You See it?' for you... and we found something that has given us the idea for a new game - 'Is it a waste pipe or a ancient treasure?' We think its a good laugh... Let us know how well you do! :D
We hope you enjoyed today's video... Thank you so much!

Soo relaxing. Coffee and scottish mudlarking ahh! At the "obligatory" blue willow was there a pipe in the mud behind it looks like a peeking bowl and stem. Luv small plastic bits I add them to my jars. Craig...crafty challenge...you (or nicole) should drill some bottlenecks and make a windchime. Happy hunting

So many fun and quirky finds! The isinglass bottle is amazing! I’ve never heard of that before, so I really appreciated Craig’s segment! Can you tell us why there are so many pieces of pipe stems on the beach and in the fields? Were the stems long, and smokers broke them off for some reason? Were they something that had a short life, hence many landed up in the rubbish? Did women smoke pipes, or only men? My apologies if you’ve answered these questions before. I’m just so curious why portions of pipe stems are such a common find.
Thank you for a lovely adventure! Take care! 🙏❤️

It was a really good day! That wee bottle made the day extra special! We were reading about a nearby restoration project using fish glue, then we found this the next day - it is such an interesting thing! Glad you enoyed that! Thank you! :D
Pipes - its hard to imagine why anyone started, but smoking was very popular almost as soon as tobacco arrived in the country... the first pipes had very small bowls, as it was so expensive. These are commonly called penny pipes - many folks say they were only intended for one use, but folks used them until they broke. They broke quite easily, because they were very cheap made and usually thin... so, that's why we find a lot of them everywhere - fields, harbours, anywhere where people worked - they just didn't last very long.
As tobacco got cheaper, pipes got bigger and stronger... Pretty much anyone who could afford tobacco smoked - men, women, children - there were no laws prohibiting children from smoking until quite recently...the same is true for alcohol consumption!
So, that's why we find them everywhere - they broke easily, and a mindbogglingly wide range of people smoked!
There is more info coming upon pipes in next weeks video - we found an unusual and more recent stem! But, perhaps we should do a more comprehensive section on te subject! :D
Thank you so much, best wishes,Nicole & Craig xo

@@scottishmudlarking thank you for such a complete and fascinating reply to my question about clay pipes. Wow!!! Just wow!!!! I can’t imagine children being allowed to smoke and consume alcohol!!! Mind boggling is right! The fact that the pipes were poorly made explains a lot.
