  • Munich, GERMANY - 1991 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies' Original Program - Despite miscalculating the take off of the triple Lutz for her jump combination which led to her crashing into the camera pit, Midori Ito of Japan managed to complete her program with no other incident and ended up placing 3rd.

She’s a champion alone for how she conducted herself through all of this.

    ボロボロの状態で滑った大会なのに、気配りを忘れない。
    観客も実況も解説も彼女に優しいのは、まさに彼女のお人柄なんだろうね。

What a sweet young lady. She is clearly an excellent skater in this video. Accidents happen but she wasted no time getting back on the ice and, as someone mentioned below, she didn't cry. She's a tough cookie.

Poor Midori. She was always so unlucky in her competitive career. So ahead of her time technically but continuously held back by compulsories (even losing a second world title in 1990 because of them), then finally has a chance to shine in the first Worlds without them and just can't catch a break.

Exactly! Not to mention that under the current scoring system she would have won '88 Olympics.. with SEVEN triples! But not even on the podium.

She is a class act. She does have a history of jumping close to the walls (even in 90 Worlds).

She crashed the boards (literally) like that of an ice hockey player being rocked by a hard body check! Indeed a figure skating “moment” that by now…replayed a million times!

Poor #MidoriIto. She really had a rough Career, and believe she may have been robbed here and there. While we all know she got the #Albertville Silver under SO much Pressure, I think we all should remember if it wasn't for HER #Trailblazing influence in Japan thru the late 80s-early 90s, later Japanese, Korean and even #AAPI/ABC-Pacific greats wouldn't be here - #Yuzu, #YunaKim, #Kwan, #Asada, #LuChen, #PatrickChan and now #Shoma. I think even other US Women Skaters at her time were influenced by her #Skating, Music and Costumes. She always had a great #Respectful, #Humble temperament, Personality and #Charm On and Off the Ice. #Japan did it right when they honored Midori with lighting the #Olympic Cauldron at their games: She didn't win the #OlympicGold - but she was a true #Champion and embodied the #Japanese Culture. Thanks #Midori. 💜🇯🇵

  • @krisvalecny1565

Stupid, blind, and biased judges failed to notice that she DID NOT fall on her jump. She had completed it perfectly and THEN tripped. So the only deduction she could have been punished with was the one for a fall, not for not having executed a required element.

Techicaly she landed the combination, so she should have only been deducted for the fall but not for the fall when doing a required element. By the way - this Lutz was definitely one of the finest I have ever seen, just a perfect, textbook jump. The ice rink was too small for her. Asian ice rinks used to be much bigger at that time. The Australian and German judges should have kicked themselves in the head.

It's funny. Midori was such a strong and powerful athlete that it's easy to forget how tiny she was. That doctor just scooped her right up. She was only around 95 pounds. :-)

She definitely got some help from the judges but it was such a weird and confusing situation. It's clear the judges didn't agree on how to mark that. She was definitely overscored but who knows what's going through the judges minds at that moment.

I'm still surprised that she came out ahead of Kerrigan in the short. I know her combination was more difficult, but she made a major mistake and her artistry and lines weren't nearly as good.
