  • There's a lot of seed starting going on here! Join me today as I start a few things (many of which are new to me) and talk through my process, then get a tour of what's already growing under lights.
    Spoiler alert: I definitely planted too much. I guess this is just my lot in life, to be buried in sea of seedlings because I lack any self control around plants.

    A note to my gardening friends across the pond: I know my pronunciation of "Nicotiana" hurts your ears ... it's just one of those odd gardening things where our two parts of the world happen to have a very different pronunciation of the same word.

      Tom-ate-oes/tomahtoes. It's not like we're unsure what you're talking about. You do you. A friend and I always disagree on the pronunciation of Kalanchoe and Calibrachoa among others. It's fun to tease each other. I say Nicotiana the same way you do. :)

    Last year I purposely bought little 12 cell trays to rein myself in at seed starting time. Great idea, except I bought two 14 packs. Gardener math! Starting from seed is easy, but when it comes time to lug them all up from the basement, drag them in and out to harden them off, and then planting them, my 54 year old body side eyes me. 😂

    I sowed nicotiana in a take out food container, pricked them out into a 10x10 tray, 6 rows of 6 seedlings. Grew them to about 4 inches wide, and when planting, just tore off what I needed, plopped onto the soil, tamped it down, covered with a bit of compost and watered them in. I had great success and gave extras to neighbors.

    The lettuce and salad mix containers from the grocery store (that have the resealable plastic you can pull back) work really well for broadcast sowing. They're twice as deep as the takeout containers, so they don't dry out as quickly. I'll use them for the faster/taller growing seedlings.

Not everything goes perfect and not everything needs to be perfect to start a garden. I have to restart half of my sees due to starting to early, heating issue, and excited puppy that i found out can jump pretty high. All because I got fooled by the weather here in upstate NY. I also look at anything that holds something as a seed starter.

    I'm not a soil siever. I figure that odd small twig is the garden dumbell that my beefy seedling boy might need to lift on his way to greatness. And its a pain in my buns. Also, usually I go crazy and try to grow everything but it turns into a burden later. This year I am only gonna seed start the stuff that is ringing my bells hard. I live in southern Wisconsin and tried Purple Cow seed starting mix for the first time this year. It is made locally here. Plants can grow in this 45 days without a need for feeding. Also, I am close to Jung seeds and picked up some cell packs that have 18 3 by 3 cells. I can quickly sow a variety of seeds and moving the seedlings isn't too bad. Also, my Trachelium took 28 days to germinate so don't give up. Happy spring as we have snow coming our way!

    I have two types of romaine, arugula, spinach, kale, onions, butter crunch, chard, cilantro,and mesclun salad greens and escarole growing in my unheated sunroom. It’s supposed to be 20 degrees here in CT so I covered these with a row cover just to give some extra protection. Inside I have peppers, eggplant, marigolds, basil, cumin, parsley, dill under lights and in front of my s facing sliders. Next up is tomatoes and sprouting my peas that are late due to crazy cold temps. One thing about the New England weather is it’s never boring. I skipped winter sowing this year except for my alyssum which was an experiment because I saved the seeds from my plant I winter sowed last year…I know the packet of seeds aren’t expensive but I had to see if I could do it…It’s looking great 👍 Thanks for sharing your seed starting with us. I think I’m going to try your broadcast method next year and see how it goes. The romaine I had was from last year so I wasn’t sure how it would germinate and it went wild so I had to prick it out of the cells and into a window box until it gets a little warmer here. Happy Spring

I'll have to go back and double-check the seed packet to see why it was one of the first I planted. Fortunately, I think we're past our last frost now here in the PNW so I can probably get them out soon.

    Hi Erin, seems to me that seeds are something I just can’t get enough of until it’s time to pot them up! 😣 or heaven forbid I have to fight fungus gnats! I agree that although I love them all as they pop their little heads through the soil, by May I can be overwhelmed and some never make it to the garden! I too am doing the less is more when it comes to actual numbers of seeds planted! Except of course for the super tiny ones you can barely see! I have more snapdragon seedlings than I wanted because I love the color Apple blossom and they were older so I seeded a bit heavier 😮! Thankfully I have also decided to plant thicker in the cut flower garden! I think by April 7th! I will hit seed tray overload so I too am hoping for at least some milder nights by Mid April so most of what is up potted can move to the sun porch! We will see because I don’t want to heat it! I am excited about some new seeds I am starting we will see if the multicolored Quinoa will be a beautiful cut flower or dinner or both! I have my seed starting in my dining room ( not having Easter Dinner this year) so the seedlings are cheering me up today as I received an inch of snow this morning! 😁 Peace and blessings! 💚💚💚

      Yes, there are RUclips videos on this but I definitely advise pinching back your Snaps when they have about 4-5 sets of true leaves down to 2-3. This will give you more branches and fuller/ stronger stems. You can also do this in summer when they slow down to get more blooms when your weather cools off!

    • @girlgrowswild
      @girlgrowswild 6 месяцев назад

      I can empathize with being overwhelmed come potting up time - however instead of cutting back this year, I'm trying a different route and just starting in larger containers - our springs are really weird here, sometimes winter holds tight and others they warm up quick and you can get an extra 30 days in your growing season. So this year, I started most of my 6-10 week seeds in 3" or 4" Pots - hoping this will ease the stress, and fingers crossed 🤞 most wont need to be re-potted but just straight into the garden. 🌻

    For the past few years I have been using Whitney Farms Seed Starting Mix. It's very light, very little perlite, and find it's not necessary to screen of sift, any small bits are easily picked out when I sow the seeds. I do pre-moisten before I fill the trays. I have a space issue as well, so it's really a mixed bag of containers right now...even had to evict the foxgloves and feverfew which are surviving well on my back porch. They will go in the ground next week (zone 6b/7a).

    Thanks to seeing your silver shield and growing it from seed, I wanted to share with you how it is that I have some on my grow rack today…on HALLOWEEN I set out to get one of the final bouquets before frost. I put a bunch of it in a bookend container. It stayed fresh with weekly water changes and even the flowers were pretty. After Christmas I noticed it had dropped some seed. lol, I took cuttings and grew some from that seed. Odd accomplishment but you might understand. 🙂

      I give myself a once a year rule. I make a list throughout the year if there are new things I want, but I make my self wait until the fall every year to order seeds for the next year. I sit down for a couple of hours one day in the fall & This prevents me from making impulse buys of things I don't actually have room for...

    Vermiculite molds and grows algae. Holds too much moisture. Trying different things this year and didn’t care for vermiculite. Many of these perennials don’t like too cold and wet. Never had a problem with algae until this year. One reason is because I didn’t have my fine sprayer bottle out to use and used a bottle nozzle which was Way too heavy. The other is too much condensation and figuring out the fine technique of using a fan. Especially small areas of homes where air circulation is poor.
    This weather is causing many to start too soon. It’s WI and we are looking at possibly 8” of snow tonight through tomorrow morning-4/21 happy spring. And yes, we had 70s and mostly been Way above average temps All winter.

    • @TheImpatientGardener
      @TheImpatientGardener  6 месяцев назад

      I’ve not found that to be the case with vermiculite, but every gardener has their preferences. And I think too-early seed starting is rampant every year. After a lot of years of seed starting I follow my spreadsheet pretty closely, although I am winging it a bit on some new varieties that I don’t have experience with yet.
      Oh and yes on the fans! Always a fan!

    Hi Erin, While watching your new video, I couldn't resist commenting....
    Mahogany Hibiscus, lovely plant, but it will die as soon as icy air blows from your lake. The plant won't even have time to bloom (to collect seeds). If you can, keep a plant or two at home, as a houseplant. It will put out flowers before Christmas. You can pollinate them by hand and obtain seeds. Yes.... However, it is best to make seedlings from cuttings. After flowering, the plant begins to produce lots of branches in early January. They take root very easily. You will receive new seedlings faster than from seeds and you will not have to sow them in March. Cuttings can be made in April, 4-5 weeks before planting in the garden.
    And sweet alyssum... I know you sow some plants using the winter sowing method. Do the same with alyssum. They grow better when spring temperatures are low at night and the sun warms them during the day. Seedlings are healthier than those forced to germinate at home. In addition, expensive space on the heating mat....
    Personally, I use 2''/2'' multicells. A dozen or so grains for each cell. I replant the whole group, without separating them. It's easier to plant a whole tray of these cells when you can put them outside without worrying about space. Then you plant them wherever you can, everywhere... at the front of the flowerbed, on the edge of the pot (they fall nicely), etc.
    We have a similar climate. I'm in zone 5a, near Montreal, Quebec.
    Best regards....

      Thanks! Good to know on the mahogany hibiscus cuttings, and there is no way they will flower anywhere near me, which is find because I'm just in it for the foliage. As for the alyssum, they are already up and going strong (three days after sowing). They've been moved to the "cool" shelves.
      Love the multicell sowing. Thanks for sharing.

    No seed starting in my casa this Spring. I'm going to let the garden center tickle my green-thumb fancy in late April. Will be dividing some perennials and moving them around, lots of Lemon Coral Sedum wintered over, and just going to keep it simple. I will garden vicariously thru others because a For Sale sign will be going up, soon I hope.

    I have decided to not start seeds early anymore. I just don't have the space. And I'm currently fighting an infestation of fungus gnats in all of my houseplants. 😡 To add extra fuel to their fire would not be beneficial at this time and would save me a lot of frustration! No yard work here in north central Alberta either. We are currently having our second, or is it third, bout of winter! 🤣😬❄

    What do you prefer to perlite? Making my own potting soil with land and sea, coco fiber and ?Perlite? What would you recommend next year? Found pines fines in bulk for next year, of course after I bought the perlite and coco bricks 🤪, but will use pine fines and bulk compost mixed together this year for top dressing. Also, I LOVE Alyssum! It self sows well here in Chicago…I love is so much my youngest daughters name is Alyssum…Aly!

    • @TheImpatientGardener

      Pine fines are great. Rice hulls work well as a perlite substitute in potting mixes. For in-ground planting, I often use chicken grit from the feed store (which is basically the North American equivalent to the horticultural grit the Brits often talk about using).

    When you put your seedlings that you grew from seed out into the plastic outdoor greenhouse you set up on your lawn, do you harden the plants first or do they harden safely in that greenhouse without burning?
