Subverting expectations is at the base of humor. Every joke that works finishes with an unexpected punchline. Playing this piece in this sort of situation is so unexpected, that many people reacted finding it funny. This is a pianist that, in similar situations, has chosen to play Liszt's _La Campanella._ The laughs lasted for a very short time and silence quickly resumed. There was no booing and no persistent signs of disrespect. You're free to disagree, of course, but I mantain my understanding that there was just surprise, nothing more.
Actually, I thinnk she did it on purpose, with a humorous spirit.

She has managed to take what is considered a cliche- a beginner piece, over-played, simple- to something that makes you feel as if you've been transformed to heaven. You feel utter peace when you hear her play this. It's absolutely delicious. Sometimes it's the easier pieces that really shine when expert like her plays them.

    • @dominic6055

Well said, but also it's a good way for beginners to understand the difference between a real musician and a beginner that just wants to hit all the notes. I don't really agree with the slow tempo that Valentina plays, I prefer it to have more of a "march" feel, but anyway you can straight away say her rendition is super high quality and well thought out.

The opening of this piece of music is easy to play, but it certainly gets harder towards the end and by no means should be classed as easy. There are abridged versions of this for less capable students, but it does take an accomplished pianist to give this a half decent performance. A great performance takes great pianist!

There goes Für Elise once and for all.
The audience laughs because it typically is the first piece any aspiring piano player learns. So everyone who knows someone with a piano, has heard some timid attempt at playing it. It has become, in some ways, lesson 1. Now, the fact that Valentina Lisitsa comes in for a 4th (!!) encore and starts playing the much listened tune, well, that´s kind of unexpected and funny. Nobody laughed at Beethoven, ok?

To those that have said she doesn't play with much emotion on her harder pieces that she's played, this is proof she can play with an absolute metric ton of emotion. Those pieces just require much more focus on musicality, quickness, and make it hard to flood each note and passage with emotion, but she nonetheless does it.

I think it's incredibly sweet that she played this piece and that the audience got a gentle laugh - I don't think they were mocking her. I think it was just an entertaining surprise. I would probably laugh in surprise, too, as though there was some sort of delightful secret I was in on! And then she plays beautifully and there's not a single sound in the room because everybody appreciates Beethoven so well-played. Well done! :)

It's easy to forget that this is a beautiful, masterfully written piece of music. Yes, it was the first piece (or first real piece, anyway) that I learned, just like many other people, but the reason for this is mostly because I was drawn to its beauty. Like Canon in D, or Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, its popularity doesn't diminish its beauty.

    He loved her.
He composed a song for her.
A quite lovely song, as it were.
No one knows for sure who she was.
Only that her name was Elise.
She must have been quite wonderful in her day.
Dignified, graceful, and elegant as it were.
    Thank You Herr Beethoven.
It's beauty still evokes deep seated emotions in me
    some two hundred-forty years later.
I think I understand how much he loved this woman.
I loved a woman like that a long time ago.
I missed my chance, and then shortly thereafter,
    She died.
There really do exist some things that are timeless.
    Love is one of them.
It is actually the greatest thing extant.
    Nothing can compare.
    Amazing.
    Inspiring.
    Still, to this day.
    Close your eyes, and listen.
    Love.
" And now abide faith, hope, love, these three,
but the { greatest } of these is love. "
    Any questions ?
    I didn't think so.

Section A and it's repeats are easy to play and so many beginners only play that part. The 32nd notes to play at correct tempo would defeat so many intermediate players, there is certainly no reason for an audience to laugh. There are other technically tricky parts, but the really tricky things are less obvious, subtle and delicate dynamics and subtle changes in tempo that even students on high grades usually don't achieve very well. This version is about as good as it gets and it is certainly not hurried as she has been accused of on some other pieces.

dude she plays way more technically difficult songs, i’m assuming this was taken from a whole concert of her playing multiple songs. she probably played something as hard as la campanella before this, so the audience hearing fur elise; one of the more simple but recognizable song is funny to them. Therefore, they laughed.

One of the reasons the audience laughed in the beginning is probably because, as @Lydia G. and @윤한일 said, the song brought them back to their childhood or people didn't expect a relatively simple piece. But, there is another reason people are missing. I don't know how to explain this, but the very first melody of this music is dubbed a SUPER CHILDISH lyric in South Korea, which goes:
    You are a gorilla
And i'm handsome while you're ugly.
Since this song is in the beginner program of most of the piano lessons (and nearly everyone tries piano in their childhood in South Korea), almost all of the young kids know this melody and that probably is the reason that the song was used to tease other kids.
