In the late 90s Sears stores we're everyone's go to department store because you could buy everything, all types of clothes, car stereos, 📺 tvs and I really don't know what would have saved these stores but I guess if they would have foreseen doing a little bit more online but I appreciate the video because it's nice to reminisce and remember when I was a kid???? I just wonder what people are going to be talking about in 20 or 30 years that's here🤷♂️ I guess we don't appreciate it so much at the time but thanks for the awesome video and I noticed you're putting up a lot of videos so keep up the good work🎉👍
Mentor is the largest city in Lake County, Ohio, United States. The population was 47,450 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Mentor was first settled in 1797.
It's sad these box stores and malls are becoming obsolete these days! Americans are becoming more and more recluse! People aren't going to leave their homes some day! Everybody has groceries delivered at home, shopping on line! The internet is ruing our lives in a bad way!
The part she questioned if it was the garden shop; it was. The doors she looked through before that was the tool department and indoor garden shop. Also, (at 4:56) you could see one set of stairs going up to the second floor. There was also an elevator but it was to the side. To the right of the stairs was the shoe dept. And to the left was the kids dept. All the way straight ahead was the womens department. Upstairs was electronics and non clothes stuff. Also, the plans that we keep hearing about is converting that sears into condos. No details but it hasn't gotten any closer to reality in over 15 years.
Mentor is my hometown. Loved this place. Bought everything I possibly could there. My fondest memory of that sears was when I was about 13. My parents bought themselves and me two mattresses. The total out the door was around $4500. My father asked the young clerk in the mattress department if she was on commission. She replied "no, but HE is" (pointing to an older salesman over in the appliance section. My father yells "HEY YOU! Come sell me these mattresses!" The salesman practically sprinted over and took the sale. Wouldn't you know it he even sent us a personal "thank you" card in the mail. And me just coming of age, learned a very valuable lesson in life.
I remember that Sears well. The last Christmas they were open I bought Christmas presents there. Under the awning was customer pickup for equipment like lawn and garden. The Last thing that I picked up there, was a clearance item. I don't remember what it was but there are some issue with the price. I remember arguing with the manager, that salesman had promised me one price, and when I went to pick it up they were trying to charge me a different price. I won that argument.
They leave the doors open because of heat, that basically is an airlock and without air conditioning and circulation it can get hot and literally blow the glass out of those doors so they leave the inside doors opened so that it doesn't get so hot in there. When the store was opened that's what that area was for is to stop heat Loss and air conditioning loss so you went in the first set of doors the door shut behind you and you open the second set and it helped with maintaining temperature.
Oh wow, I hadn't even thought about the Sears store there closing when they went belly-up. I grew up in the Warren/Niles/Youngstown area and it feels like I spent half teenage years walking around that mall. The entrance at 2:40 is where I walked in many many times. It's a bygone ear now, something we'll never see again.
I miss Sears. USA made Craftsman tools for every job I had to do. Tough skins pants with the indestructible knees the kids couldn't tear out. I used to wander around the appliance section and remembering Sears' house brand Kenmore was considered a very good and desirable brand, not just a private label. The one by my house when I was young had a tobacco counter at the front door. I remember seeing the different pipes and the sweet smell of tobacco when walking through the door. Now look at the company, mismanaged into the ground just like the rest of the country. Such a sad state of things.
This is my very first viewing of your video. I loved it!! I definitely will be watching more! Keep up the great work!!! By the way greetings from North Carolina!!!
I've been eyeing this place up for a while, every time I go to the Mentor mall right next to this place I always wished i could go in here and check it out
That's my mall and Sears. Loved their Christmas wish book and i got the Cadillac of strollers when I was 7. You could orders home kits and build them . Thank you for viewing.
I moved to Mentor 3 years ago. Only went to that mall for my daughter and Hot Topic. She uses the Planet Fitness though. B&R in Kent, lived in Merriman (Akron prior).
I was somewhat dismayed by the lack of ceiling fans in the auto center, (unless another fan collector salvaged them. I suppose that could account for the broken window, who knows)? But I digress. The object at 16:02 is called a recoil air hose. That would have been connected to an air compressor in the tire center. Anyway, keep up the awesome vids!
The black "K mart" box by the front door is a Knox key box. The keys to enter the building are (were) located in there, the local fire department has the key to open the box.
I retired from Sears in 2013. Worked at the Middleburg Hts location in Ohio .There were lots of office workers in the basement. It was a great place to work but upper management screwed up the whole company 😕. They got their millions and everyone else lost their jobs😢
The little outdoor area was used for lawnmowers and lawn equipment. It was fenced off more before. I think those black doors has shelves in front of them for the Craftman tools display.
There's talks of possibly building a fire station where the Sears automotive building is. Not sure if that plan is still in the works. Had you shown up a few months earlier the garage door was still blown down from a tornado that went through the parking lot there last year.
If I’m not mistaken, they actually did have a garden center there. My buddy worked there for several years back in the late 80s, early 90s before hoping the Air Force.
I'm from one state over in southwestern Indiana. Evansville once had a couple of Sears, each connected to a mall. One mall, the Washington Square Mall, which was booming in the 90's, but is now just used for second hand stores, one bar and grill and I think a Noble Roman's Pizza. I'm actually from Vincennes so I only visit Evansville once every month or so. And the other was at Eastland Mall (still doing very well to this day), which stayed afloat until 2018 I think. This was the time when they all began dropping like flies. At least in this area.
I went to Sears as a kid in the 1980's in Gastonia, NC. it was a good place to go . in 1998 they moved to the mall in Gastonia which was better. the old Sears building has been empty since 1998, my sister worked there and was there when they moved to the mall. also got the Sears catalog which was nice to look at. sad that they went out of business.
It's a nice big space, but too much money and upkeep for these really large places. Pretty much all of them have those awful warehouse metal roofs like a grocery store has and there's just ceiling tile between the inside and metal roof. I would imagine they would get quite hot and cold without massive HVAC systems that probably cost the total mortgage on a 3 bedroom house. On the other hand, some of those small solidly built brick buildings, that might be a good investment. I'm not a big fan of all of the windows that they tend to have, though...too much theft risk for a private home.
To my knowledge, this store was to be gutted & turned into "upscale" Apartments & condos, from the get go on it's closing (or very soon after). Curious now when it was sold. I don't go by the mall on 84 much any more, so I'm missing that, but yes it looks bad. This mall underwent some kind of unneeded renovations not too long ago, Italian marble floors (that were in nice shape) were removed & cheap ceramic took it's place. There is an Abandoned Macy's on the other end. 16:06 an air hose. Thanks for the look, as close as I am I haven't drove around that way in a while.
In 2017 Sears Holdings closed 109 Kmart and 41 Sears outlets and sold their Craftsman line of tools to Stanley/Black & Decker in an attempt to prop up the failing company. It turned out to be just the beginning of their slide to the bottom. Stores like this one are cavernous and obsolete today. Retailers do not need or want stores this big anymore. Unfortunately demolition or cutting them up into smaller units are the only alternatives besides making them office buildings.
It’s awesome that someone decided to buy the building, especially with graffiti. I do admire art work, but when it comes to inappropriate things…that’s where I draw the line.
