I have been fascinated with bullet journaling for years; watching hundreds of bujo set ups, how-tos, hacks, common mistakes, etc. but I have always been too scared to try one myself! 99% of the bujos you see on RUclips or Pinterest are so artsy and beautiful...I have neither the artistic ability nor the time to dedicate to a book that is supposed to simplify my life... and it actually seems counterproductive! I have watched this video 6 times and taken multiple screenshots. Finally, a bujo set-up that I can actually accomplish! Thank you for this! I'm going to start right away!! 🖤

I personally like the new year setups, because the end of the year is when I have some freetime and can take my time to carefully plan the spreads and how I want them. Then, during the year, I can just fill them out, which is its purpose. I try to be a little bit more artistic, but I still prefer the minimalistic look overall.
(this year, I'm saving a section to practice drawing and lettering, without filling the rest of the BuJo with it)

I've moved away from using weeklies myself, I like the idea of having space for notes in my daily spreads. I do like the first of your 2 new weeklies as its similar to how I used to set mine up. This will be my third bullet journal, and I keep parring it down, reducing the art. Reducing the colours. So this year Ive reduced it even further. But when the inclination hits, I'll leave space at my month diving pages for artwork, and see how that goes.

Used a similar setup to the second example, because it was on one sight. In normal working weeks I divided the days also with vertical lines to have different categories (work, house, exercise and others). This was because I have a quite small scripture and do not need that much space. The „notes“ section is also a place where I put tickets for cinema etc, because I really like to keep the journals for memory, although it is not that minimal ;) But I make this since school (then I used a normal calendar, added some stickers or postcards, did some little art projects) and really enjoy flipping through them. AND this also means that I do not have random tickets or gift cards lying around.

Your second weekly setup is what is known as week-note in planners - days of the week on the left for appointments and dates, note page on the right.
I'm using a week-note planner for, uh, about the 10th year running now and for me, it's the best layout ever. Can definitely recommend.
My planner also has like 60 additional note pages in the back and I do something like a cross between a planner and a bujo which is why I also snoop around a bit in bujo vids. :)

    Nice flip.
For my projects (Lifetime Goals), I like to use a totally separate book - an STM (Scribbles That Matter A5 Iconic dotted) book. (I‘m artsy, so I colored in some of the icons with permanent markers.)
Like yours, my layout for projects is also a 2-page spread. Right page, divided unequally in fourths (using skinny washi tape), is for the main project info. Left page is for notes. At the bottom center of right page, I stamp a cartouche - then I print my Reward in it. The reward is selected from my list of rewards that I hand printed on a plastic ‘dashboard’ with permanent marker. I use the Rewards sheet as a handy writing board - that keeps me motivated!
I also like that you provided the video time stamps in the pinned comment - thanks for that!

I love how you set up the 2020 journal. Being so basic really appeals to me. I am retired now so am not so busy and mainly use the basic monthly setup you did this year. I am not the least artistic so I pretty it up with stickers and washi. I find added color makes me want to use it more! I do the index, future log and then all 12 monthly spreads right away in a row. I don’t add weekly or daily myself since I’m not that busy. I add my collections starting in the back working forward. Works great for me. If I want to journal I choose to use a separate book. And my mind really does prefer the vertical monthly spread like you did. It’s so simple! Thanks for the great ideas.

I have used a bullet journal for 2 years now. The first year I used the one you are using now and then, for some unknown reason, I changed to a more traditional daytimer style. I am going to a hybrid of the two for this year. I don't want to spend so much time doodling and designing my BUJO as I did the first year-I loved doing it but it was a rabbit hole for me . The book I bought for this year has the basics of a year at a glance and the weekly spreads done for you but leaves blank pages for the customizing I still need. I love your minimal design so that's what I'll use.

I like the second weekly spread. If you want to schedule your tasks consider the Alistair method... It's set up like your content log except instead of the tasks, you put the days of the week. You put a circle back under the day scheduled, an X over the circle if completed or a dash showing that you migrated it to the next day. 💜🌞🌵😷

I really love your setup! When I started bullet journal mid-2018 I did all those crazy artsy stuff. It looked pretty nice at first and I was really motivated.. but after a few months I realized that I was using it less and less because I was loosing the motivation to draw all those doodles and stuff. So I went to a more minimalistic style, which was still pretty artsy (color schemes every months, a theme, but less doodles in the weekly spreads). It was okay for a while, but I finally saw a video of a very minimalistic set up and I realized how much I liked the clean look, so I started doing that and it changed everything! Now I really use my bullet journal and enjoy it way more!!
My weekly set up is pretty simple as well. I do a column on each page, on the left side I put the weekly tasks, while on the right side there’s a very simple habit tracker and a menu plan for the week. In the middle I have simple lines to divide the days (plus one for the notes). What I do is I put my plans/events for each day with a little square before them, and under that I also put my daily tasks with a dot before them (just to visually differentiate them).

Thank you very much for this simple bullet journal set up video. I am a total newbie and have just received the lavender pro Scribbles That Matter bullet journal, which came with a fineliner attached - bonus! I have watched many bujo set ups and felt rather overwhelmed by the whole thing. I admired the beautiful art work some people do but really needed to see the basics of setting one up, so seeing what you include in yours and why and what worked and what didn't and your reasoning is so helpful. Best wishes for 2020 from a new subscriber.
Incidentally if anyone in the UK is considering buying a STM bujo I must just say that I ordered it on Sunday 22nd December and it arrived Christmas Eve - very impressive service for this time of year! I use a spread like the second one. Love it. I also divide the task page (with just a break) with work at the top and home/personal at the bottom. The left page with the days of the week works great for me when I want to keep certain appointments in mind as I plan my days; allowing me to be mindful and be realistic about how much has already been scheduled when during the week. I also when using this spread mark the tasks that will be accomplished/assigned to the day with that letter of the week so there is no need for me to recopy and move it somewhere else. Easy simple and works well for me.

Hello Vera. I admire the simplicity of your bullet journal design. I tried a bullet journal for several months and found that my planning and the complexity of my business including client work requires flexibility to insert note pages while staying focussed on top 3 to five projects weekly and top tasks daily. I conduct weekly reviews at which time I do a brain dump. I also perform quarterly reviews that are more effective for tracking progress on annual projects and reference when the results are contained in my planner. Not simple, but necessary. I experiment with layouts and create my own printables for a quarterly disc planner. Always looking for new ideas to tweak my planning process. Thank you for your ideas.

I'm new to bullet journaling. I tried a myriad of methods over the past year, but for some reason bullet journaling was kind of intimidating for me. This video has really helped me grasp the concept that "the set up doesn't have to be perfect" and "it's ok to try out a variety of things". I think that may have been what was really holding me back from trying. Thanks for showing how simple can be a great way to start and then branch out to make it my own. Great video and ideas--Thank you! Though I am an artist, my bullet journal is just an organizer, and my artistic time is spent on my projects instead of the journal, so I love the minimalist approach. I also love the flexibility to individualize it to best meet my own needs--An idea I found that really added to my journal was a monthly reflection...At the end of each month, I would reflect upon *Important goals not started *Important goals needing more time *Important things accomplished *Lessons learned (or remembered) about myself

I think Vera has more to do and more to organize than I do but I LOVE how her tasks and calendars are arranged.

I love your style! I love using the Alistair method so you still can have one master task list but then schedule the stuff that has to be scheduled. To make it even more organized I do personal stuff, work tasks, and appointments in different colors so it is easy to find everything. Using this method means that there is very little setup each week and it only takes one page.

Hello Vera! Thank you for this. I am reading Ryder's book and started my bujo a few weeks ago during this 9 week quarantine. With this weird time where everything has changed quickly my usual methods of projects tasks reminders and such were quickly out of date. My writing is sloppy and there is no art, but experimenting with this method has really helped me mentally feel a little bit more in control and able to express myself. Your layouts are lovely. subscribed!

    Love seeing a simplified spread!
I’ve been bullet journalling for 3 years, and I simplified each new book from year to year, much like you did.
Mine, however, is a lot more free-form, more like the original creator’s of the BJ - I don’t pre-plan layouts, I don’t draw boxes, and I removed weekly logs to just have daily logs - which is the most important part of my bullet journal: being able to brain dump my thoughts and plans each morning, as my daily ritual. At the start of each month, I create a new monthly log, using my yearly log to guide me with appointments. I also have a page for monthly things to do, then I start my daily logs, which I fill out each day, using my monthly log to guide me for appointments - and sometimes thoughts may only be a few lines, but sometimes thoughts and plans may run over multiple pages; I also use these daily logs to “journal” any anxieties and emotions I’m feeling, much like Ryder’s most recent video shows.
    Good luck with your journal!

My bujo quickly morphed from a quite well-researched, pretty, complete (for my needs) tidy planner to a book of random days (sometimes Id go weeks without using it) with tasks, appointments and notes scribbled down in it.
I love the composition of your journal. The simplicity and functionality is inspiring.

I bulletjournal (and love it!) It's great to see someone not changing out their book just because of the new year.
Personally I only set up max a double spread for stuff like wishlist or project ideas, and instead make another if or when I run out (page threading technique).
I also only set up each months pages at the end of the previous month, and the weekly pages at the end of the previous week. I like the flexibility of being able to change formats as I go along :)

I love the idea of planning. I have bought several Passion Planners and more recently 2 quarterly Amplify planners. While I especially love the Amplify Planner, I find I am not a daily planner/journal-er. I have wasted most of these planner which makes me feel bad. I have toyed with the idea of a bullet journal for several years but didn’t really know how to start and felt a lot of decorating pressure even tho I am not very artistic.
I watched The Happy Ever Crafters interview with Men Who Bullet earlier this week and am feeling a bit more confident. I’m a bit of a perfectionist so learning to deal with “errors” and imperfections will be a challenge. Currently researching the best notebook that has paper that won’t harm my brush pens. Nice video, thankbyou

I really like your bracket week spread. It looks neat and organized. I think I’ll try it, too.
I haven’t done a week spread, just classic dailies. And as a result I haven’t done any of my month tasks yet! Because my week was not planned. This is a disaster.

Love your set up 💖 As for the weekly spreads, consider allowing yourself to us which one works best on busy weeks when you are busy and the other on the not so busy weeks. No real reason to only have one layout. I have been bullet journaling for most of 2019 using various different spreads. My only pages laid out ahead are future log and index. This allows me to set up my monthly and weekly spreads according to my current needs. Granted, my life is vary dynamic and I can’t imagine a single spread that would ever fulfill what I need from one month to the next. But that is the beauty of bullet journaling being able to adjust to your needs

I HIGHLY recommend you go to the official bullet journal RUclips channel and watch their tutorials. Ryder Carroll, the guy that came up with the idea, has ADHD, and the bullet journal is very straightforward and not frilly. All the artsy junk is counterproductive, IMHO, as it scares away/discourages people who could benefit from it immensely.

I actually have a similar set up but instead of the daily boxes I did half a page that with a box that had all the events/deadlines in it. Then I did the daily as a a list but without the boxes because some days I need more space and some days I need less space. To distinguish between days I just drew a line underneath. It’s really simple but it works really well

I haven’t used a bullet journal before, I just usually make lists of things to do. That isn’t serving me well though. I have tried a variety of journals/organisers but find myself adapting to fit the journal prompts rather than the journal fitting me. I happened across this vlog and it makes so much sense to me. I’ve ordered the same journal you use and look forward to giving this a try. Funnily enough... you saying you change the set up actually gave me permission to do so? Crikey, I’ve been so busy doing, I didn’t take time to really think about creating my own set up. I'm not sure where my head was at, but I just found out about bojo, the ideas and optiomns seem endless. I'm going to have to watch these a number of times to sift them. Thanks for your thoughts.

Just found your video after a search. I am working from home due to the pandemic and i want to get away from the screens when im not on the clock. I am new to bullet journals and love the minimalist approach you have. I use a lot of project management principals in my job so i loved your project pages. I also like that one paired up with the second weekly spread as you can divide milestones or deadlines throughout the week on one side and use the tasks page to keep on track, brain dump, make lists, etc. Thanks for the inspo!

I bought a ton of stuff several months ago when I first hears of this, but I got discouraged very quickly because I don't think I'm capable of 'doodling' Your method is great. I am 76 and I have saved and subscribed to your channel. I am ready now. Thank you so much!

So refreshing! Bullet journaling for those of us without an MFA in painting. LOL Mine is incredibly utilitarian, but it works for me. Good to see someone else putting function over form! I love *looking* at the pretty BuJos online, but I could never maintain one. Yours is great!

Wow, great video! I'm looking to use the Bujo to help organize all the vision, ideas, and projects I want to stay consistent with. These take a lot of time and effort themselves. This minimalist set up is perfect to get me started using the Bujo system without it being a distraction. I'm a newb to the system. Thank you so much for making an easy paced video with the ideas being so accessible. I'll be revisiting! Peace
