    A “panhandle” is when a state has a long, thin section of land that is kinda separate but still part of the same state. Idaho, Texas, and Oklahoma have panhandles.

      Worth noting that in this context, the word "state" refers to any geopolitical entity. The US certainly has several panhandles between states, but the feature is also very common between nations in Europe, Asia, and Africa. A good example is the southern part of Thailand between Myanmar and Malaysia.
      The proper/ academic word for a panhandle is a "salient".

    • @AbruptandOffensive
      @AbruptandOffensive Год назад +6

      I’m fairly certain the geographic term panhandle originally came from when Texas wanted to join the US but wanted to be a slave state. According to the Missouri Compromise states below the 36th parallel could be slave states but had to be free states ABOVE it. Texas was forced to give up all state land above the 36th parallel which included the Oklahoma panhandle and part of Colorado. That’s why the state of Oklahoma literally looks like a pan.

    Centralia, Pennsylvania is an interesting rabbit hole. The heat and fire along the coal seams suck fresher air into the shafts and tunnels. I saw some pictures of people going for a walk down a road there years ago. They showed shots of how their sneaker soles were starting to melt from walking over an asphalt road that went over a hot spot.

    Some people already made the distinction about whether or not there are two Kansas Cities, but here's some additional information...
    Kansas City, Mo., was incorporated in 1853, eight years before Kansas became the 34th state. The Missouri city took its name from the Kansas River - which was inspired by the Kanza People, Native Americans of the Kaw Nation - and was originally called the City of Kansas. It became Kansas City in 1889. Kansas City, Kansas was named after Kansas City, Missouri purposefully. By naming this town after the growing city on the Missouri side of the state line, city leaders in Kansas were able to capitalize on the success of Kansas City, Missouri.

    The word "panhandle" is used to refer to a long, narrow projection of a larger territory that is not a peninsula. In particular, “panhandle” refers to the narrow portion of the state that tugs away from the main state. Although the US has ten panhandles, only nine states have this feature. West Virginia has two panhandles, bringing the number to ten. Source: World Atlas.

    2 things:
    1. to clarify, only a portion of MO and KS are seperated by the River. most of the border can still be crossed on land including part of the border between KcMo and KcK. the MO River also divides all of MO so the two areas in either side don't touch except underwater.

    I must say, growing up in the City, we had a panhandle in just down the road, in Golden Gate Park, where I chose to live in the dorms despite my mom working at USF. We'd (my sister and our friends) pop in our mom at work on BART then on to the 5 Fulton to roam around but be home to our homes to make sure that the house was straightened up (during school/summer days) before our mom came home from work. ) Naturally, our friends (my sister's friend and her sister, my friend, would have to go home before our mom got home. Christi and I just had to wait for our mom's call from work and nobody was to be in the new house (we were 12 and 14 and always had a babysitter and our mom worried).
    We and Julie and Joyce never did anything wrong. Their mom worked at JC Penney during swingshifts and had to be home to get their little brother and sister anyway but my mom and their mom (both single moms) grew to know one another. We'd spend Christmas Eve.

California, like most of the country, divides its politics based on whether you're talking about one of the major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, San Fran, San Diego etc. Or whether you're talking about the more rural areas outside of those cities (which makes up a huge portion of California, at least if we're talking about land area.) So much so that there's at least two separate initiatives going on in California that are attempting to separate those parts of California from the metro areas as the metro areas dominate who gets elected in the state.

    1:11 No, you're right. While Kansas City, MO is the bigger Kansas City (and hence the Kansas City everyone thinks of when they think of Kansas City), there is a Kansas City, KS on the opposite bank of the Missouri River.
    6:15 I would rate the claim that Washington was originally called Columbia as mostly false. While it is true that the bill that would become the Organic Act of the Territory of Washington originally proposed the the territory be called the Territory of Columbia, it was amended to name it the Territory of Washington before the bill even left its house of origin.

    Damn, they did my home state Arizona dirty. There was so much they could've brought up. The Grand Canyon, the Biosphere 2, the Saguaro cactus, the copper mines, the massive city size. But nah, they just named a small town and said it was a four corner state.

    A state's "panhandle" is the part of the state that can be picked up like a frying pan. The Oklahoma panhandle is the best example. I and others would not say that West Virginia has a panhandle, just two long fingers. I say this because I have met a girl from one of those fingers and that is what she refers to it as, and who am I to argue.
