    Cuban fiber has made my backpacking so much more enjoyable. I can go farther with less stress thanks to my CF tent and Pack. was an 11 pound difference just in those items.

    Dave Canterbury forgive me for saying this but It is so great to see and hear from your videos the shear love respect and joy you have for your life partner Iris Canterbury. I rarely see this for ones spouse much anymore. It give my heart hope for the young ones to see this love and respect in hopes they to will have it in their own relationships. Your a great roll model for men and women, boys and girls. Blessings to all of your family, friends, business and associates.

    I love the old ways and the new ways; even though I know how to start a fire with flint and steel, I still use a lighter most of the time! Nice to see some lightweight gear reviews Dave. Everything has its place and time.

    This setup is the first time I've ever had something before you. Although I don't have a HG over quilt yet. Bought a Costco $20 down quilt that is great for warmer weather down to about 50'.

    Ignore the primitive skills people complaining about your review of a DCF tarp. It's a piece of gear. Nothing more, nothing less. Why are some people so hostile to learning about something new?

    Ive always been mindful of how much I carry in my pack, which is showing even today altho I cant see spending the amt on that gear I do have a pack which atm weighs 30 pounds and has everything I need and then some to survive for an extended period of time, Im more of the mindset I want something to last me for a long time so durability is key whether it weighs a little more Im fine with that altho Im not traveling long distances for hikes. I did a 72 mile hike with a 35 pound pack carrying all necassary food with me except resupply at certian campsites but thats the longest trek I have done, I do want to hike the AT at one point. But thank you for sharing this video I have never heard about it until I watched a video of Dave Canterbury bushcraft videos which is more what Im into.

    I've been using Dyneema thread as my go-to snare, fishing and repair line for years. It's ultralight and due to the longer chains than it Kevlar cousin, it has amazing tensile strength. I carry 50m of thread on my bush belt in a spool plus an additional 15m of it in my pocket kit.
    I swear by Dyneema thread.
    And now it seems Dyneema is making tarps. Non-traditional bushcraft just had Christmas come early

    I love hammocks and have been using them for several years. They especially good for you if you have a bad back. You might want to try the Snugpak hammock cocoon for cold weather. Always like your vids lots of good information and advice. I can't tell you how much that I've learned from watching your videos. Thanks

  • @scottellis8008

    Agreed would've never thought. But then my head starts to think upon my personal beliefs. They are (for most things in life I'd say) KISS- meaning "keep it simple stupid" as I'm sure most know it my favorite lesson working on a farm since I'm 12 and that is "work smarter not harder." This has helped me in life countless times. This seems like it fits that category to a tee. NOW the issue is this...common man. It will be years until this could be included in one of Dave's common man series. This stuff is not cheap. And as Dave said himself lot can happen to it. A little ember and now you have a hole in a very expensive tarp. Convenience comes with a price, at least at first until the next round of conveniences cone along. Great video. Glad you choose to explore and see others point of view and options and not become a curmudgeon and stick to old ways. We all aren't getting any younger and the longer we can be out in the dirt....I'm all for it. Kudos, appreciate your open mind.

    Never thought I would see the day that Dave is using DCF!

    • @DavidCanterbury
      @DavidCanterbury  7 лет назад +16

      It has merit for certain applications, I am open to trying anything and learning from everyone. If I was in a Longer term Hunting Camp I would always choose oil cloth, for an emergency tarp or overnight, the weight differential is hard to argue

    • @HikeLighter
      @HikeLighter 7 лет назад +3

      DCF shelters (tarps & fully enclosed) are pretty much the only type of shelters I have used for the last 10+ years. Dave has just always been such of a fan of oil cloth shelters (tarps) that I never thought he would give any recognition to DCF due to the massively reduced durability over oil cloth.

    • @HikeLighter
      @HikeLighter 7 лет назад +5

      @Eric -- I have had one DCF shelter fail as a result of fabric failure. It was a 0.34 CF (the thinnest and most delicate of all CF) and it was actually a failure of the fabric itself. For reasons unknown the bonding of the fabric began to deteriorate. I have shown the failed fabric to dozens of my fellow highly knowledgeable counterparts within the industry and we have all been baffled by it. Other shelters from the same roll of fabric showed no deterioration. The shelter in question never had any chemicals sprayed on it. It should be noted that the fabric that Dave is using for his tarp is a standard (and most popular DCF) 0.51 oz/sqyd sheet of fabric with a 0.16 oz/sqyd camo laminate applied to it, so it is *significantly* more durable than the one that I had failed. I should also note that I have owned four of the 0.34 shelters and none of the other three failed. I have seen other DCF shelters suffer failures from the users just being ignorant of how to use DCF shelters. I have also seen DCF shelters failure in super brutal hail storms. As for SilNylon being replaced by DCF, well, that is primarily the exact market that DCF excels at these days, replacing SilNylon shelters. If you have little experience with DCF, go with this camo 0.67 oz/sqyd fabric, or the more durable 0.74 oz/sqyd (if it is offered) which is some super crazy tough fabric. One of the highlights of DCF over SilNylon, I should note, is that DCF does *not stretch*, so if it is raining, you do not have to deal with the fabric stretch that is notorious with SilNylon. Lastly, I would note that I have had/used well over 25 different DCF shelters, and only that one strange occurrence of actual fabric failure. I have put to the test almost every variation of DCF ever manufactured, this truly is some amazing fabric, when used in an application where it is best used, as is the case with almost any fabric, just as is the case with SilNylon, which itself has a very viable place in the market. For significantly less money than DCF, and with the exception of the stretching issue, SilNylon for the vast majority of people makes a hell of a lot more purchase sense... you really have to be the kind of person that wants to save a few ounces, to justify DCF over SilNylon, when it comes to shelters/tarps. (ps: i have published more about DCF than anybody else on the internet, over at my website, hikelighter.com - as well as numerous industry inside whitepapers - so happy to answer any specific questions you might have)

      Yep application is everything.. if I'm traveling through the country hunting its light and fast.. hunting out of a base camp I like a little more sturdy gear and more creature comforts.. I guess I need to add that light is subjective... if your carrying it on your back, or in my case carrying it on a mule lol

    Nice, never thought I'd see you with an ultralight hammock setup! Your going to love that tarp, I have the same one. One other aspect of the cuben fiber that really shines is after a rain storm. It doesn't soak up water the way a silnylon tarp does which will turn into a heavy soaking wet sponge after a rain storm. The cuben you just shake off and pack up. Hammockforums.net is the place for learning how to hammock camp. Also check out Shug's channel, he's got a video where he hiked and hammocked -40* weather

    • @DavidCanterbury
      @DavidCanterbury  6 лет назад +2

      Nothing is too heavy if you have the proper conveyance, weight is relative, this is an overseas travel kit where weight is very limited, while it is nice for sure it also comes with a very nice price tag and is not near as durable as my normal choices

    • @DavidCanterbury
      @DavidCanterbury  7 лет назад +6

      Canvas Tarp is still in the works also Oil Cloth is being Prototyped now people must realize all gear has a design intent like knives and tools, If I want long term HD I want Canvas and Oil Cloth but for a light pack or overnight in a Jam it is hard to ague the weight of this tarp IMHO, but yes I will ALWAYS prefer OC to anything
