No love for trouble in FF9? It was one of the more unique ones in my eyes. Rarely would a status effect on one character directly damage another character
Right!? And mustard!!!!
Yeah, FF9 had some weird ones. I was definitely expecting to see Trouble, kinda shocked nothing from FF9 made it in honestly. Mustard could've made it too.
Completely forgotten that one!
FF12 enters the chat
What was obscure in 12? Not asking to be a dick just a long time since I’ve played
@@Nanobot1989Immobilize, disable, reverse and oil to name a few.
@@Z1nt3koh shit, totally right. Forgot about those.
What about "???" from demon wall?
And then we made it leave
FF6 absolutely has the most obscure status effect. Shadow had the status Interceptor, his dog. If you left Shadow die at the end of the World of Balance, Relm gains the Interceptor status in the World of Ruin. It can also be transferred to any party member(or enemy, be careful with giving it to enemies, because if they die, the Interceptor status is gone forever) with the ability Ripper.
The Interceptor status is a 50% chance to block physical attacks done to the person with the status, upon blocking, Interceptor will counter-attack with either Takedown or Wild Fang. Both counter-attacks are defence-ignoring magic damage of 55 damage or 66 damage, respectively. If the enemy is Floating the counter-attack will miss.
There's no way that Interceptor isn't the most obscure status effect, as no one even knows it's a status.
For me, a couple of status effects were missing:
FF9- Mustard
FF7- Hyper/Sad
I really loved the hyper/sad thing with its sort of offense v defense decision, and also how it might have you debating whether to use an Inn versus a tent since inns removed the status.
@@omgyeti2049 I remember having that dilemma. A month ago. When I last played it. I always fury myself, really. I'll take increased limits for increased damage.
I use hypers all the time as it builds up the limit gauge faster... great for getting all your limit breaks.
I would mention Mustard, from IX, then I saw your comment.
By the way, isn't Mustard the name of the attack that causes the Heat ailment? Mustard isn't an ailment on it's own, as far as I know.
I always really liked the "oil" status in FF Tactics. Makes you take more fire damage.
Also Don't Act, Don't Move, and Faith
Oil always felt way too situational to me
IIRC there's one random encounter with a lot of bombs (red blue and black) where getting oil becomes somewhat dangerous
Final Fantasy Tactics had some trouble handling Confused AT THE SAME TIME as other ailments
One character discovered Jujutsu because while Confused *and Silenced* CASTED A SPELL
Another *while Berserk* CASTED HOLY
Basically the game itself got confused...
XD
Oil is also in 12
Marbol: ill give you every status under the sun!
Me with a ribbon: ok..sure..
Except the Marlboro status effect. XD
Disease is brutal.
I always made sure I had a character with a Serum gambit to heal it.
One day I had the character with the gambit using the Nihopalos accessory. Took me a few minutes till I realized the character the proceeded to use serums on the inflicted character wasting about 20 serums 😂
2:54 old
4:51 itchy
6:52 hide
8:30 aura
10:18 chicken
12:18 costume
14:10 disease
Thanks. This should be first comment
I thought atheist would be the rarest status effect
I think it's worth noting that Costume appears in XIV as well as XI during certain quests in the wilds. Some main scenario, as well as a couple of the arkasodara tribal quests. You're only ever limited to actions dictated by the costume, and often needed to fully dispel and return to reapply if you got caught by failing the objective or just getting aggroed by a monster.
I'm surprised trouble from FF9 didn't make this list
Freeze and mustard would also have been good!
Dude 9 had such annoying status
FF9 also had Bad breath and while MOST of its effects can be nulled Grand Cross Necron (FINAL boss) is even worse since it can Zombie Mini and Beserk the ENTIRE party can't null those 3 effect but GC randomly instantly kills its targets even if you survive EVERTHING ELSE it causes.
This is the first one that came to mind for me 😅
Toad has always been my favorite status effect because 1 frogs are my favorite and it just looks silly watching the frogs move in FF7.
Toad & confuse is a funny animation.😂
In FF7 just learning Frog song can be annoying sure I could have 5000+ HP at the time you Can learn it but IF NOBODY is immune to both Frog and Sleep its very annoying to KILL those frog enemies afterwards.
I'm always reminded of the black mage in Mysidia in FF4 that turned Cecil into a toad, and speaking to him again to change back.
I always appreciate the representation for FFXI in your channel's videos. So many Final Fantasy channels either ignore the game altogether or spread misinformation.
My favorite implementation of the Costume status was the Viscous Liquid that could be found in Mamook & Mamool Ja Training Grounds Assaults. Drinking the liquid gave you the costume status and turned your character into a Mamool Ja. While disguised as a Mamool Ja, enemies would not be aggressive and you were free to travel through the area without fighting, but it also applied a potent damage over time to you that could prove lethal if you were not careful.
There is also another unique status effect in FF 12 that only one boss in the entire game can cast, and its not anywhere else in the entire game. Demon Wall have abilities that can inflict the status X-Zone on characters, effectively removing them completely from battle. This cant be healed, its not like KO, where you die, this is a complete removal from the battle, and whoever gets inflicted with this will temporarily be completely unavaliable, and cant be used for anything. It was a luck-based game when playing against Demon Wall.
Trueee
Yeah the missed a few good ones, didn't do their research
They do 7. They will do more lists. Trust me.
Well, not quite. Earlier FFs in the form of Typhon did it with his Snort. And Atomos had a similar move, I think it's called Wormhole, which does the same thing.
Fun fact, X-Zone was a spell in FFVI that banished enemies. It was essentially Doom/Death with a chance to miss, but it targeted all enemies.
FFVI also had a couple enemies with the Sneeze ability, that knocked a character totally out of the battle without dealing damage to them.
Getting Toad or Mini on you in FF VII Golden Saucer Arena would basically be the end of you.
That roulette wheel could be quite cruel at times.
I think the Concept statuses from FFXIV's Pandaemonium 8 Savage fight are pretty unique and fairly obscure since it's high level content that only a subset of players would ever see. The idea behind them was that you would be given one of three sets of "concepts", and by standing next to a player with another status, you could "take on the properties" of one of six different creatures, though the ultimate use was that you would create the creatures required to withstand the damage type given by specific towers that would then appear. Later in the fight (High Concept 2) they further developed on it, requiring players to combine the "fire" and "wind" type concepts to make a Phoenix, which would then allow the party to revive after taking a hit designed to always defeat them.
Then again, FFXIV has so many unique status effects, especially for these higher level fights, that you could make an entire 7 more obscure status effects video about just savage/ultimate fights
My favorite is the one that stops auto hp regeneration in the Unknown Garlean Soldier bit. It’s not super complex but the effect it has on the storytelling is massive; it makes you feel so weak to have such a core gameplay feature you took for granted since level 1, and yet, it is beyond any Garlean soldier’s wildest dreams.
I think confuse from Final Fantasy 8 deserves a mention.
While many games in the series have confuse, it usually just causes a character to attack a random target, friend or foe. In Final Fantasy 8 though, confuse can cause you to do anything. Attack someone, cast spells, use items, nothing is off the table.
X-2's confuse is way worse imo, since in that one, item use tends to be picked over most actions and you can end up wasting valuable items like megalixirs.
I remember squall using my megaelixers while confused 😂
Final Fantasy Tactics had some trouble handling Confused AT THE SAME TIME as other ailments
One character discovered Jujutsu because while Confused *and Silenced* CASTED A SPELL
Another *while Berserk* CASTED HOLY
Basically the game itself got confused...
XD
Frog was fun status. In Chocobo Dungeon you can also infect other enemies when you're in a frog status
I honestly wish Statuses like Pig or imp would return someday. Imagine something as serious as FF16 and then a random enemy suddenly turns you into a Pig.
People take ff16 seriously?
or a pif even haha
@@MikeRotch-ur7sxjust because you didn’t like it doesn’t mean it has no merit
@@keenansartain2854 Saying it has merit doesn't make it have merit.
@@MikeRotch-ur7sx loser
I'm surprised you didn't mention "Interceptor" from FF6. Thanks to the Rippler Lore/Blue Magic, we know that you can give an enemy Shadow's dog; kill that enemy and Shadow will never appear again.
OOPS
Came across Disease in FF12 while playing last night at Giruvegan. I was not prepared that status effect at all...
The Enemy Hungry from FFVII casts Mini on characters then eat them.
That is the best Status effect enemy in all Final Fantasy series!
I've yet to watch past the intro... but I really hope Chicken from Tactics is here !
Oh yeah !
The final battle of FF14’s Pandaemonium raid affects players temporarily with a unique status effect during one particular phase. It renders you unable to jump.
The moment I saw the title of this video I was like "I bet disease is in here...I hate disease in 12"
12 had so many interesting ones! That demon wall in tomb of raithwall that just flat out removed a character (think it was x-zone?), reverse, oil and lure are some more I remember from that one! Having enough spells/items to cure all of them was almost impossible at times 😂
Also playing Type 0 at the moment, pretty sure Killsight is a status effect, which is mad as you can just run around one-shotting things with the right timing regardless of level or amount of health 😂
Man I love these games
Oh yeah, X-zone. I wonder why they decided to only include that status for only one fight in the whole game?
@@Trisaaru They realized it was a really annoying thing but forgot to remove it for that one instance lol
People sleep on how good FF12 is, and the way the game is structured. Incredible game.
Yeah, it was way ahead of its time and looks absolutely gorgeous at that.
Excellent vid. Got my hardcover Lock On 006 reserved! Mostly to hear what you and Chris gotta say. ^__^
An extremely obscure status that i only know of in FF VI is "die if MP = 0", as the name implies if whoever has that status has no MP they instantly die. This is a condition that only enemies had but if you used the Rippler ability it could be given to party members and that is important to know because there were multiple ways to damage MP directly.
Also on a LLG SOME of Gau's RAGES that have DIE if MP = 0 effect though I'm not sure WHICH ones.
Magic Master in FF6 could be killed with this method but given that he has thousands of MP it could take an hour using rasp or osmose
About 50,000 to deal with but unless you can't SURVIVE Ultima at least 7500 max HP it does to all 4 your you fight it WITHOUT the Phoenix esper then you must drain its MP so that it can't use it Ultima cost 80 MP so it needs 79 or less so that it fails to trigger.
@@veghesther3204 I cheesed the magic tower with molulu's charm and berserk on Master, Vanish party and reraise
Except I'll always fight it BEFORE getting Locke in the Phoenix Cave so you either need enough max HP and LV 80+ party members to survive it or drain his 50,000 MP to UNDER 80 MP and have Ultima fail to show up on screen after the boss dies.
I would like to make an honorable mention: seizure from final fantasy V and VI. In V, i remember that a helmet - crown of thorns - has it as default negative effect. It drops your Hp constantly. In VI, it can be applied by some enemies and bosses, like the tentacles at Figaro castle. It has the same effect, but it's less threatening than in V.
Ugh I hated Disease in 11 and 12, by far one of the absolute worst.
I was kinda expecting to see Imp or Bubble get a mention.
My personal favorite status from XI is Transcendancy, gaines by consuming a Primeval Brew in abyssea.
It was literal God Mode for 3 minutes
Disease was so annoying ugh
Disease and Disable. Worst two in the game.
FFXII could have had it’s own episode
ff8 Meltdown with its defense down status effect is quite interesting as well than we would have levitation status in different games different versions of curse which basically could also include no exp gain. other positive buffs would be the Ex fire, lightning, ice.... spells from FFX for example. FF7 with bubble is also an honorable mention or how would be the 7777 buff in FF7 for example which is only granted when players have 7777 hp. With morph and card you could also argue that they have some kind of status effect inherited and so on and on and on ^^ Also shattered the status following stone after further attacks
You should have covered immobilise instead of disease because immobilise only works in the context of 12's battle system.
Immobilize also exists in the tactics games and Revenant Wings, so prob better to say within the context of the ivalice games
Hope you cover Misery next time! Such a fun status effect in FFXIV where you have to /comfort someone to cure it
*pats your back*
I still have comfort on my bar in case it ever pops up again.
The only status effect I use is "Attack". It lowers the enemies HP every time it connects.
You forgot X zone from FF 12, Demon Wall.
I love how in FF7 crisis core that the curse status will make this sudden jolt animation of being hit preventing the player from casting or attacking but being random moment. At thee same time the two type of stun where the first stun was the dizzy like effect either from normal enemy or the Tonberries. And the other just completely froze the player in a still position from the web of the mechanical spider. and the shooting star is a boost for luck in the skills.
I didn't know aura went that far back. Cool video.
X-Zone from FF12. Literally only used by like 2 enemies.
12 had so many interesting ones
I like Imp status in FF 5. The character can deal heavy damage if wearing imp equipment when they are afflicted with imp status.
I can see a lot of fun being had with a status effect like "Old"! Imagine playing an elf character who has that cast on them and it enhances their stats instead of hindering them. Even better if it's something/someone not quite so obvious, like a Viera or something.
Not all elves get stronger with age.
I think a Nu Mou can benefit from that, considering how they all look old.
So many from FF6 could count, but I'll focus on two:
1) Heat: an unnamed status caused by using Edgar's air anchor on an enemy. A 'heated' enemy would instantly die if they performed a battle action.
2) Charm (not 'confuse', but 'charm'): rare, unnamed status ailment that could only be inflicted by the enemy move 'Entice', and only three enemies (two of whom were bosses) had it. Characters who were charmed would only attack allies or themselves until they or the monster that used 'Entice' were KO'ed, after which the spell was broken.
Extra weird was getting and using 'Entice': In the World of Ruin, in Owzer's mansion in Jidoor, there is a painting of flowers which, when inspected, would instigate a battle with three flower enemies known as Rafflesia. This is the only time these enemies can be fought (and they are missable if you beat the mansion dungeon first). If then found on the veldt and learned as a rage (good luck with that), Gau could use Entice as part of the Rafflesia rage; and here's the kicker: THERE ARE NO ENEMIES IN THE GAME THAT RESIST ENTICE. AT ALL. THIS INCLUDES THE FINAL BOSS. YOU CAN MAKE KEFKA PUNCH HIMSELF TO DEATH.
Charm is common skills in FFT for thief, used on opposite sex or monster.
not as severe until they knocked out, you just need to damage them to broke the status just like confuse.
"Old" was literally the first one that came to mind for me. Appropriate that it was the first on this list. I personally LOVE FFV. It's one of my favorites in the whole franchise due primarily to its interpretation of the Job System, which I feel FFT KINDA ripped off, but I ain't mad about that.
Have you played Blue Dragon? The job system is almost the same as FFV
For the LAST one Disease did the same thing in EVERY WILD ARMS game prevent the use of Healing items/spells (they would restore no HP) at all until you get rid of the status the only exception in the Wild arms game are Healing Items that ALSO DISPEL ALL status effects since those would get rid of the status FIRST before healing your HP.
But in the Wild Arms games only the enemies COULD cause the status their was no way YOUR party could cause it to enemies.
Ff12 reverse was novel
Also bubble, which was totally busted and a must for the postgame.
I was surprised to not see the Heat status from 9 and others
Disease in FF12 is particularly clever in how bad it is due to the gambit system. Since most healing gambits work on a % basis, they won't be targeted for healing and it isn't cured by esuna. So, it can take quite a while to even notice what's happening particularly when playing on wait mode. (Unless you already have the specific item / healing spell ready)
Zombie and Frog effects make me channel the DoomSlayer Rage ability
I would add "Undead" status, from FF6
And lets not forget the most oscure of all, "Blind"
Ive played (but never beat) FFX-2 before but ive never actually ran into Itchy, that i can remember at least.
I like Vit0 from Final Fantasy VIII. Capable of turning even the toughest of physical tanks into a pushover and paired with multi hit moves like Squall, Zell or Irvine's limit breaks can make short work of any boss susceptible to it. The best way to inflict it is the same as any other status ailment, summon Doomtrain.
Doom train was fucking awesome.
True, but l love using meltdown.
@@UltimaMan So do I. But sometimes you just have to smack someone with a train.
I need to be inflicted by the Costume status effect for this halloween
I don't know if this would count for this, but there is the status called Pain in Final Fantasy VIII.
When inflicted, it put Poison, Blind and Silence on player/creature.
FF16 forget to add these and added a movie instead.
So the status Old was basically Sifu but 30 years before that game existed. Cool.
In Final Fantasy 6, it turned out that Shadow's dog, Interceptor, is a "status effect"! Using a certain Lore blue magic spell, an enemy could dog-nap Interceptor, resulting in the dog's permanent loss! Using Confuse and that Lore spell, it is possible to transfer Interceptor to the command of other characters besides Shadow or Relm.
An important thing about XII's Disease is that a unit inflicted with it will always be considered to be at max health. So enemies that perform certain actions at certain HP thresholds will never perform those actions while they're Diseased.
Why did I just see Sephiroth being bullied by froggies?
Toad and mini was a pretty funny debuff
Ah episode that the title really made me say, ooooh.
Lol Disease! Literally once you caught that it would wipe the party with no hope of recovering if you do not have a cure for it, what a nasty status effect!
Once you head to Giruvegan, you better stock up on vaccines. Learned this the hard way.
The FF games that have it I'll never play BUT every Wild Arms game has the same stats with the same can't HEAL HP from BOTH items and spells effect UNLESS a ITEM curse the status and HEALS HP at the same time in that case the status restore effect would trigger before the said item restores 100% HP on its target.
Saber from FF1, while being useful for any non-NES version, is still enigmatic on what is actually done as a status effect.
Ff11 had a ton; medicated was another interesting one. It prevented you from using medicines that would give you that status effect
Ooooh. That explains why getting 3 stacks of Unnerved gives you the Craven debuff (Chicken) when fighting Argath in FFXIV.
Frog/Toad is the most obscure I have ever seen
Pig from FF4 comes to mind for me. I’m not even sure what it does.
Doom Train was always my favorite.
I don't remember the itchy status in X2, but it's been a long time since I played it anyway.
I'm surprised there was no XIV statuses. There's so many statuses in that game that are used in one fight only that are so obscure that even I as a super fan of that game that has sunk nearly 10000 hours into it have to mouse over the status to know what it does. Statuses that I can't even tell you what they do, such as abandoned in the Cerberus fight of World of Darkness
Vit-0 from VIII is unique I think. Pretty self explanatory but it's exceptionally powerful.
From Meltdown? I couldn't remember what the name of that was.
Not so self-explanatory considering that it also reduces Spirit to 0. Also hilarious against the Red Giant, which is supposed to be a puzzle boss requiring you to rely on Gravity magic and fixed damage attacks, but since they neglected to make it immune to Vit-0, inflicting that status makes the battle trivial, while the Red Giant will still mock the futility of using things other than Gravity magic, even as they inflict thousands of points of damage.
XIV has some interesting status/debuff effects that could be considered as well due to their rarity thanks to the different kind of game and action, as well as how to resolve them
Beyond Death is really interesting as it will kill you when the timer expires, and can only be resolved by _taking lethal damage_ - doing so will leave you at critical health but keep you alive.
Walking Dead is similar in that it will kill you before the timer expires, but can only be cured by being healed equal to your maximum HP. While this is similar to some interpretations of Doom, the only two instances of it (the Living Dead of Dark Knight and the True Living Dead of the Seat of Sacrifice boss) trigger Walking Dead when you hit 1 HP.
I wish FF14 implemented the costume effect for free use into 14. I loved that effect, using the belts in 11
The 'Meltdown' spell from FF8 that is basically a powerful defense down by inflicting Vit 0
OG FF7: Resist status. Resist all other status effects while active.
Could you please make a video of Vera. I love your videos!!
FF6 Clear - "Am I a joke to you?"
For FF6 Vanish/clear is also in FF9 but for most of FF6 I rarely use it and by the time Quina can get Vanish that party member starts to be complete CRAP for boss fights.
'Old' from FF14 is my fav.
From Shisui Castle dungeon boss fight incase you were wondering
Remember when Nasir struggled to understand the purpose of things like status effects when he and Sakaguchi were programming FF1? If Sakaguchi never got through to him, I wonder if we'd still have this video!
It's funny that you mention that, as Sakaguchi never did get through to Nasir! They had to use two Japanese programmers instead called Ken Narita and Kiyoshi Yoshii (who became legends in their own right!) :D (p.s. thanks for the comment! ~ Darryl)
I can't believe I missed that! That's hilarious 😂 thank you for your response and amazing videos!
I came hoping to see the Marlboro Spores from Final Fantasy Tactics. A very nasty effect that could instantly turn an affected unit into a Marlboro.
And oh yeah, no cure.
Extremely rare.
I don't know if it counts as a status but ff7 the original you could have "moods" which had effects on how much damage you would take and how fast your limit bar would fill. Though I don't know if it's a typical status effect like the ones in the video
Nah I don’t think that would count because most of the time people liked having those effects on them.
Like I always kept my team with hypers on them. Some people purposefully kept sadness on their team. So it was more enjoyable to the majority
@@Nanobot1989 yeah I used it too, but Im not sure if the status effects needed to be bad, I think they only need to be obscure
Sadness and fury. I used to make my party so strong that fury could only help, not hinder me.
@@lakubana92that’s fair. And yea I would say a limit break/damage thing would count you’re not wrong.
I hated getting them in my usual play-throughs, but sadness is key for low-level runs.
You forgot "rippler" from FF6, the move designed solely to steal Shadow's doggo. 😔
What about Pig from ff4? Was it just like frog but turning into a pig instead?
Ffxiii trilogy has some unique and unusual ones I think: pain, fog, daze, curse, veil, vigilance, faithra, deprotect, deshell, imperil.
Misery from FFXIV should be in the list for its peculiarity of being able to be cleansed by the use of the /comfort emote
came here to say this!! it is my favorite little mentor quip to point out in the dungeons where you can get it haha
I think depression from FF14 cause it can be removed with the comfort emote
I think Reflect from FF3 NES should've been on this, since it's the only version that doesn't act like the version starting from FF4. Since it only reflect some elemental Blqck Magic and some magic enemy skills. However, it only had a single stack.
Surprized that "Annoy" from IX didn't get a mention
Edit: the status is called Trouble in English, and the ability Zidane uses is called Annoy
I was hoping to see Reverse from FF4, found only in one boss fight, and missing altogether from the US SNES release
I think you should have focused on Imp instead of chicken. Tactics isn’t a mainline FF game for one, and two, imp was interesting because not only did it persist outside of battle until cured, there was a whole set of imp-specific gear that was actually pretty strong when used by characters under that status effect
wooow Drylo on FFXI, deep cut.
Bless chicken. It and berserk made leveling so easy
I'm sure any enemy hit with the Chicken status would suspect fowl play.
It would be so cool if some of these status effects were in a modern FF. Imagine ''Old'', but in real time where you watch your character turn into an old man, and AOE so that you could age whole armies into dust or something.
Sekiro had a similar status effect in real time, and Bayonetta 2 had the reverse, a demon shot at the player a beam that made the character a child for a limited amount of time.
Both are slightly annoying, to be fair.
Seeing how FF16 turned out, I fear our only hopes of seeing these in modern FF games is in remakes. Can't see them wanting to suddenly go back to status affects in mainline after removing them completely in 16.
@@Miriam_J_ FF16 is an OK game as games go, but its a poor RPG and its an even poorer FF. But as you say, that seems to be the future. Simple games with flashy graphics.
Zombie was always an annoying status!!
There was also a chicken debuff in FFXIV during the Return to Ivalice raids in the City of Rabanastre. During the final boss, if you accumulated 3 debuffs, you'd turn into a chicken and run to the wall. Also...what about the "Misery" debuff from XIV that could only be cured by a /comfort?!
Don't forget about Pox, from the Deep Dungeons.
Disease was the scariest from all the ff games.
I figured you’d go with Innocent rather than Chicken, but FFT has a lot of unique status
old is a cool status effect they could make immortal character immune to it (Ardyn from ff15 for example)
