Ruth has been fascinated by portraiture since her mid-teens. Her imagination is sparked by the human face, and its unique capacity for character and communication. Ruth taught herself to paint in oils while also studying for a BA in Music, and on graduating began painting full-time.
Since then, Ruth’s paintings have gathered praise across the globe. Recent awards include a Purchase Award from the Art Renewal Center (2021) and 1st Place Young Artist award with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (2020). In 2022 Ruth was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

“My work is almost always figurative; it is humanity, facial expression, and body language which spark my imagination. I want to communicate, and I always strive for a strong narrative element in my paintings. Inspirations include the work of pre-Raphaelite and naturalist painters, and post-impressionist painters (Waterhouse, Bastien-LePage, Friant, Bramley).
I am passionate about painting from life - I’m drawn to the organic experience of capturing my immediate reality in paint. This passion is balanced by a keen curiosity regarding texture, layers, and edges. I constantly seek the most imaginative ways to make paint replicate the feel and character of what I see. Quick, immersive live studies are generally followed by extensive studio work.”
Ruth has exhibited at Sotheby’s NYC, Arcadia Contemporary NYC, MEAM Barcelona, the Mall Galleries London, and is represented by Fine Art Commissions, London.
Ruth's painting “Things Not Seen” has been selected by the Art Renewal Center for the Lunar Codex cultural time-capsule project; in 2022 a copy of the painting will be sent to the Moon.

Best art show on the internet.
But steady on Miss Fitton. You can't criticise the mighty Sargent! Nice person; decent portraitist but not in the same universe as JSS.

What a wonderful interview! I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation between the both of you. She is so humble and truthful about her process and her artwork. I specifically enjoyed the comment about not wanting lines. Lines are the bane of my existence and I am glad that I am not the only one who has to actively go back and soften them. Why brain......why do you paint lines?!?! LOL! 🤣

So young and so talented! When Ruth talks about researching it is much the same as my process. I will spend a great deal of time researching but at some point I have to then set it all aside and concentrate on my image and my light. I work in watercolour so I have the added complication of carefully planning applying the pigment.

It is interesting that England has similar situations with art shows as Canada as far as only being interested in contemporary art only. In Canada we couldn't get a realism painting into even finalist list to save our lives, unless the artists applying certain attributes .

Great painter and focus of her interests. I recommend the "Range of Light" for her outdoor immersion on holiday, The Sierra Nevada, California. (high lonesome)
