  • This is the fourth of a series of videos that will each be concise tutorials on some aspects of working with Pixinsight. It is geared towards new astrophotographers and those just learning Pixinsight.
These videos are associated with my Website: CosgrovesCosmos.com, which covers all aspects of my personal journey into Astrophotography. There you will find images, gear, tips, and techniques!
This video deals with Cleaning up, Editing, or customizing your mask to make them more useful.
This often takes the form of creating the mask with one set of tools and then using another to remove, add, or modify elements of the mask.
In this video, I am using the DynamicPainBrush, which is a $5 premium utility by RBA-Tools, that I think is well worth the $5! I use it all of the time. It can be purchased here:

UPDATE 1-5-23: I just learned that DynamicPaintBrush is only available for Windows. The authors had indicated that they would release a version on other platforms, but this has never happened. Because of this, I will do another video using the CloneStamp tool to accomplish the same thing for those who cannot get this tool.
You can also use the built-in CloneStamp tool using the "Paint Pot Method." I find this to be very inconvenient - which is why I use the DynamicPaintBrush.
Others I know write the mask to a Tiff file, open the mask up in Photoshop, make changes there, save the file and then reload the modified mask back into Pixinsight.
Again, I find the DynamicPaintBrush to be way more convenient!
Is there a 2-minute tutorial that you would like to see? Leave me a comment, and I will work on it!

The dynamic paintbrush, alas, is no longer available or supported. I made another video showing how to use the Clonestamp tool. This can be seen here:

Great tool, but sadly not available for MacOS.

I am surprised to hear that. I thought it was a Javascript tool that would have covered most platforms. I'll have to do another video using the CloneStamp and Paint Pot methods for those that cannot get the DynamicPaintBrush.

@@cosgrovescosmos Their webpage says macOS version will be available July ‘21, but can’t find a link to it. By the way, thanks for these videos. I also found some of the articles on your website blog like “10 common errors” and “Osc vs Mono” very helpful. Keep posting!
