Storage units are such a money dump. My parents had 7 storage units. Seven! The big 10x10 ones. For about 15 years. They could never find stuff in it so they would just buy more stuff and eventually put it in the storage unit. They had 8 Christmas trees in there! They spent over $100k to store a bunch of stuff they didn’t use or even know they had. After my dad passed away all of it got donated or trashed. What a waste!

Very sad they could not have thought to use the money for you. Some people seem to forget that their children or grandchildren could probably use some financial help.

When we last shifted house to a smaller place, we put a lot of furniture into storage. It took me a year to convince my husband that it was a waste of money. We emptied the storage unit and took it straight to a charity store.

We've sold our house we built 33 years ago and are moving out in one week. We've rented a 10x25 storage unit until we find a new house to buy. Until then, we will be moving back to my parents' house to help get it ready to sell. When trying to decide if I want to keep an item or not, I tell myself I bet I'll be fine without it. We've made 9 trips to Goodwill so far. No, I'm not paying to store Christmas gift bags! And let's talk about clothes shall we. OMGosh, I did not realize I had so much clothing. Even after what I thought was a serious purge, I filled the Prius and half the truck with my husband and my clothes. It is just too much. I'll be going through them again that's for sure!

This is a great video!!! I love the concept of "always empty the space so that we can reimagine what it can become"!

It's also important to consider that things kept in storage long term can erode over time. The integrity of the things won't be the same as when you put them in. It's a good short term solution but not so great for years and years.

Thanks for this video. I’m paying $146 a month (so far 3 months) because I’m looking to relocate and staying temporarily with friends. It pains me to pay for it and I don’t have much in it (extreme Minimalist here 🙋🏼‍♀️) but I need to put my stuff somewhere safe.

I personally never want to own a storage unit. I would rather donate or trash things before I ever get one, and would even go so far as to JUST owning a suitcase or 2 to AVOID owning a storage unit. I understand circumstances arise so I know some people have to get them, but I would rather avoid them at all costs

I've never ever had a desire to rent a storage unit. It just seems like a waste of money for the vast majority of people

Obviously, you don’t have a spouse and several children. I don’t think a suitcase or two (even per person) would quite cut it! Get real!

There is a great distance between 2 suitcases and a storage unit!

This would be a GREAT question for a future podcast episode. Would you be willing to send a voice memo to podcast@theminimalists.com so that Joshua and Ryan can answer your question live on the show? In the voice memo, just state your name and city (or use a fake name if you want to be anonymous) followed by your concise question (write it down first); also mention if you are a Patreon subscriber, so we can prioritize your question. (And if you have more than one question, that's great-just send separate voice memos.)

I have a very large storage unit that I got years ago when the kids and I relocated to another state. I was moving from a 3500 sq ft house (with a full basement and 3 car garage) to a temporary rental property until I could find a new house (the housing market was virtually nonexistent at the time, with many homes being used as VRBO/ABB). Finally found a house, but it's only 1800 sq ft, no basement, no attic, and only a 1 car garage. So here I am, renting a storage unit filled with rooms of great quality furniture, books and decorative items (like vases, mirrors, framed pictures), as well as patio furniture, snowblower, lawnmower, and other yard tools. Clearly I can't squeeze it all into the new place, so what am I supposed to do? Just rent a truck and haul it to Goodwill? I can't sell it from the storage unit place (against their rules), and I'm stuck paying each month because I don't have a good "let it go" solution.

hire an estate sale company to take your stuff to an offsite location for sale

Salvation Army might be able to pick it up for free at least they came to my apartment once to take stuff I needed to get rid of when I was moving. It could be worth donating instead of selling because getting rid of it (and therefore getting rid of the storage unit) would be similar to selling everything because you would “earn” the monthly cost of the storage unit back into your pocket. Like if you were going to spend $2000 this year on the storage unit, that’s $2000 you’re basically getting for donating your stuff and whatever tax write off

THat's a lot of money to be bleeding. Soon there will be a time when the cost of renting will exceed the value of your items. I'd say fit as much as you can in your 1800 sq ft home then sell or get rid of stuff.Your home more than likely can fit all your stuff if stored efficiently.

She could stop by at the end of every week after work and haul a small portion of the stuff she doesn't need off to wherever it needs to go
