I might be wrong (and late) but by the movement of the strings I think he's doing this: Harmonic (w index finger and thumb) on string 6, regular finger stroke on string 3, then same thing on 5-2, 4-1, 3-1.
Love the Police! Love it when these videos pop up James. Takes me back to the back room at Janis Music and you teaching 14 year old me those exact harmonics.
Impressive tones nice job dialing in the sound ...I compaired yours to Andy's from an interview in 1987 where he was showing off a rig and the sound is nearly identical.
Very nice Andy Summers sound. A Telecaster, flanger, delay and marshall behind you, basic things for playing the police. Recently i discovered the Electro-Harmonix flanger, what a wonderful sound !!!
The bass compressor is way more like my favorite studio rack units like the 1176. I like having the ratio, attack and release controls. Since getting this one from Dunlop, I've pretty much kept my old Dyna Comps safe at home. Great pedal!
Nailed it. I remember trying to get the Andy sound back in the late 70's early eighties and it was tougher, without all the info available now. I think a had a 70's strat with Seymour Duncan's, two fender super reverbs, mxr compressor, echo and stereo chorus going to the two combos. It was pretty good, but you are nailing it. Sounds like the record. At the time I felt like the only guy trying to cop that sound. He was so under appreciated. Everybody else was going for Eddie, Or Randy or whatever. I liked Jeff and Andy. Inelectual geek as usual.
Dude you are a real tone master!! I do the same thing!its so fun to try and dial in tones on different equipment and try and make them replicate one another! Thanks James
Thanks James for going through this! I really like your videos, they're concise and show how the tone is built rather than say "hey check this out i built this sound but I wont tell you how I got it!" and then play a bunch of shit for 10 minutes...
My wife just got me this today, for the same reason. Not killing the heads. I'm liking the giggity, I'm also trying my BBE sonic Max. I think the SoMax will do similiar.
It's all fantastic, but when you do the Lenny Breau harmonics from "I Can't Stand Losing You," I am catapulted back to the Police concerts I saw in my youth. Very well done.
Great vid. Sounds pretty authentic. I'm trying to get a similar sound for my own stuff. What's the nearest you can get to the flange type sound from something like message in a bottle, with just amp fx settings of chorus flange delay drive etc (no fx pedals)?
I have an Orange Dual terror. It nails classic rock ie Zep, ACDC, ...........but it dont do clean !! And I love The Police You nailed the tone by the way.
This might help or be a good start: www.watersish.com/archives/2015/05/andy-summers-rig-the-police-years.html Lots of discussion on the interwebs about Andy's tone over the years. You might need to Google deeper for a more definitive answer. Or email Andy. He's a nice guy and will likely answer. ;)
Have you tried a Keely? I own an MXR Custom Comp and a Keely 4-knob, and I tried a bunch of others when I was looking. The MXR Custom Comp is nice, but the Keely blew all of them out of the water (with Fender tube amp & single-coils). It wasn't even close. Your sound is nice on the early Police stuff from the late 70s, but it needs more WHAPP for my taste in that hyper-compressed 80s sound.
Nice video with some good comments regarding Andy Summers. Today, I just finished building a clone of a vintage Electric Mistress (and it contains the beloved Reticon SAD1048 BBD), and to be honest with you, it blows your Vortex and Giggity away. I now see why many guitarists are willing to shell out $400 to $500 on vintage Electric Mistresses.
Hi Voodoolabvid, Can you please show me the presets of the Voodoolab Sparkle in this "Police setting"? The other pedals you mentioned show some close up pictures of the presets of the knobs, the Sparkle hasn'nt :-( Thanks in advance Regards, Rob
Why do the people demonstrating Walking On The Moon add that lick right in front of the chord that opens the song after the bass riff ? It is bass only on the original.
heya james my name is Jonathan Cant and i'm putting together a police tribute band and i've got a bassist and I my self will play drums and i wondering if you'd be interested in joining to complete the lineup would you be able to do that?
Fantastic sound! I, too, am a bit of a tone chaser and am gratified that with the tools I have, I can replicate those great Andy Summers sounds. Curious, are you from the Baltimore/MD/VA area? As a tone chaser, I also hear dialects. Occupational hazard.;)
Excellent video ! Andy Summers is a guy whose contribution to the guitar / music world needs to be recognised more !
When I saw you demonstrate the harmonics on can't stand losing you I almost cried because I've never been able to get them down perfectly :')
Lenny Breau style, check him out.
Harp harmonics

Wow, that Vortex really nails his sound!
Wow! That tone is dead on!! Awesome James! Love your videos!
The bass compressor is way more like my favorite studio rack units like the 1176. I like having the ratio, attack and release controls. Since getting this one from Dunlop, I've pretty much kept my old Dyna Comps safe at home. Great pedal!
I could listen to these sounds all day!
Thanks you for posting this, I was over complicating things trying to get those Andy Summers sounds
Men at Work also got some really nice guitar tones on their songs - not sure what they used.

Can't beat that Tele sound!
Thanks James for going through this! I really like your videos, they're concise and show how the tone is built rather than say "hey check this out i built this sound but I wont tell you how I got it!" and then play a bunch of shit for 10 minutes...
I've got some presets myself too as a big fan, but this is nailing it. Excellent!
I'd love to see a whole video about using the MXR Bass compressor on guitar. I've been thinking of getting one. :)
Awesome demo.... love the andy summers sound... you've nailed the harmonics on "Can't Stand Losing You"... nice one !!!
Andy used JCM 800's they add the smokin clean high end distortion, like an EP booster.
Hi! What Marshall head have you been using on “High Landrons” vid? Thank you very much!
Gotta have the pick in mouth for 'Can't Stand Losing You' harmonics or it's just not the same.
Nailed it. Sounds great. I use an Exotic compressor EH Mistress and a Boss Delay thru my Bassman. Sounds pretty damn good too.
Nailed the tone man. Nicely done!
Hey James - one of the best guitar demo channels on youtube - keep 'em comin'
My wife just got me this today, for the same reason. Not killing the heads.
I'm liking the giggity, I'm also trying my BBE sonic Max.
I think the SoMax will do similiar.
Just press the button and it sure will ;-)
***** yes👍🏿
Yes!
It's all fantastic, but when you do the Lenny Breau harmonics from "I Can't Stand Losing You," I am catapulted back to the Police concerts I saw in my youth. Very well done.
What order would you arrange these pedals ini f you only had the MXR M87, Delay pedal, Electric Mistress, Giggity, 44 Magnum?
Great vid. Sounds pretty authentic. I'm trying to get a similar sound for my own stuff. What's the nearest you can get to the flange type sound from something like message in a bottle, with just amp fx settings of chorus flange delay drive etc (no fx pedals)?

Excellent video James, thanks for posting, much appreciated : )
great@ what amplifier and speaker did Andy Summer use to record Message in a Bottle in the studio?

The MXR bass compressor is the identical compressor to their 5 knob black compressor according to MXR. Its a marketing thing.
Please James, what's the vortex tone print? congratulations!
Have you tried a Keely? I own an MXR Custom Comp and a Keely 4-knob, and I tried a bunch of others when I was looking. I dig your demos James...
Hey, James, were you using the bridge pickup? Fantastic stuff, as always. You're a wizard!
Nice tones!!!
Wow, what great tutorials! Keep it up!!!
Great video ! Thank You ! Fantastic !
Nice video with some good comments regarding Andy Summers.

I ran into this while looking at pedal demos. I think I took guitar lessons from you many many years ago at Janis Music.
Where do you reccomend to use the GIGGITY on a pedalboard? before or after the overdrive pedals????
Does the MXR Bass Comp work well with a guitar? Why didn't you use a guitar comp?
is the compressor routed as last pedal just before the amp?
Don't forget Andy's tele was customized with a Gibson pick up and booster built into the guitar to get that sound
Hi Voodoolabvid,
Can you please show me the presets of the Voodoolab Sparkle in this "Police setting"?
The other pedals you mentioned show some close up pictures of the presets of the knobs, the Sparkle hasn'nt :-(
Thanks in advance

Great Andy´s sounds, thank you
Cool! Thanks for posting!
What model Tele and pickups please?
Hi Voodoolabvid,
Can you please tell me the pedal order of this effectpedals?
What comes first etc. etc.
Regards,
Rob
Fantastic! ' nailed his tone. I'm surprised by the vortex, Amy other demos I've heard are just way ott crazy, but that sounds sweet' excellent demo

You are awesome. ❤
heya james my name is Jonathan Cant and i'm putting together a police tribute band and i've got a bassist and I my self will play drums and i wondering if you'd be interested in joining to complete the lineup
would you be able to do that?
what is the pedal order/chain
another great one - thanks!
Is MXR bass compressor very noisy?
Nailed it.
3:27 AWESOME! :) That's the sound, alright :)
Good video :)
Wish I could put together sounds like that. I have several effects but lack the skill or ear.
Fantastic sound! I, too, am a bit of a tone chaser and am gratified that with the tools I have, I can replicate those great Andy Summers sounds. Curious, are you from the Baltimore/MD/VA area? As a tone chaser, I also hear dialects. Occupational hazard.;)
great vid
whats that repeater pedal called?
Type of pickups used?
yummmmmmmmmmmmmm !!! that's one sweet sound!
wats the cool guitar ...thanx
James I think you're a producer or somebody important. I've seen ur name amongst my fb friends. 🤔
nailed it son
Should do a John Mayer one!!
Love it...
Cool 😎 research. 👍🏾
how the hell did he do those harmonics at the end?! What are they called?!
An electronic orgasm. Once you've had one, you'll want to get it again and again
google "Lenny Breau" harmonics
If I only had the time. I would love sitting in though any day!!! :)
Sounds spot on!
Did not know he didn't use chorus, that it was actually a subtle flange...cool
Hard days night someone?
I thought that too. Perfect.
Wow you're spot on
Dude , that last riff was bad to the bone !!!
Yes show us all how to play those harmonics from can't stand loosing you please pease please🌈🌈🌈😎
.....it all sounds the same to me. andy summers was never a great innovator,. plinky plonky chump, at best.....boring ....
to each his own
+coltsuperocean10 Haters gonna hate. Potatoes gonna potatoe.
DJ Falko Hannover I`m not hating, I just think he is boring. You stick with your potato.
Ringo Starr is known to be a "boring" drummer too :-)
DJ Falko Hannover ...thanks for letting me know.
