Tchaikovsky is reported to have said, "I consider the liturgy of St. John Chrysostom one of the greatest productions of art. If we follow the service very carefully, and enter into the meaning of every ceremony, it is impossible not to be profoundly moved by the liturgy of our own Orthodox Church… to be startled from one’s trance by a burst from the choir; to be carried away by the poetry of this music; to be thrilled when… the words ring out, ‘Praise the name of the Lord!’ - all this is infinitely precious to me! One of my deepest joys!"

The harmonies reflect the Russian Orthodox choral singing and its complex harmonies, extended notes maintained through circular breathing and the crescendo and diminuendo tides of vocal dynamics that sweep on away. The balance of male and female voices must be just so, or it could go horribly awry. This piece poses an incredible challenge not only for the choir, but also for the conductor. And this lot have pulled it off beautifully.
"sweep one away", not "sweep on away". Predictive text strikes again!
TY for your knowledge
Yeah.....what YOU said!.....
I have no idea all this was involved ! Thanks so much for educating me

Deep from the Soul of the russian People. European Heritage of Culture. I love Tchaikovsky's Work. He got a great Talent from God.
What a powerful hymn this is. Similar to lifting one's soul to God.
Hey stranger.... We'll probably never meet but : Take a deep breathe and let your anxiety dissolve, clean your mind. You deserve happiness. May you and your family spend a great time in this life.
Music has the power to transform lives. Universal language. Beautiful!
I would argue about this. The hymn here are beautiful and peaceful, but looking at the the many blunt nasty comments, l do see no transformation of life’s, rather moments for peace or for some of hate. We are the strangest creatures of this world.
That's true can I know you better
Музыка Небес. Слушать можно бесконечно.
No matter where you are from on this small planet, music is the universal language that binds us to Gods created beauty, which indeed, this masterpiece has achieved. Well done!
I imagine this to be the music as you enter heaven. Seeing the people that passed away, seeing people you loved before, seeing God... and all is well.
Beautiful comment! It reminds me of a quote, Julian of Norwich 13th century mystic,
"All will be well, and all will be well, and all manner of things shall be well", when describing Heaven.
My sentiments exactly.
And the thing is, heaven is better than that. By a lot
Renier, well said! I have a devotion to the Holy Rosary and one of the promises she has for those who are devoted daily to her is that, at the moment of their death, she will take them by hand to Heaven. "They will see the face of their Mother."
O you poor delusional fools! Don't you know the words of the Lord: "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." (Isa 55:8-9)
Glorious, absolutely glorious. It fills a person with peace and love of God.

This is the mystical Russian soul experienced via an auditory method. Simply majestic!
Yes, A&M! I was thinking of the the rich, deeper tones that come from Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine etc and as you move more west and north the tones get gradually higher and lighter. Truly, God created choirs of Angels in Heaven and choirs of Mankind on earth to make a beautiful "audible aroma" that lifts upward to give Glory to God and comfort to us, with the inspiration of the composers.
Truly the choirs of Cherubims are singing here. Magnificent!!!
Oh My God, it helps me pray. ❤️ Seems Mr Tchaichovskey knew God well, with Great Frequency, I"ll wager.
Bozanstveno,mirno,skruseno glazba koja oplemenjuje dušu.
The majestic power of the human voice. How on earth is this spiritual beauty even possible?
Because we are made in the image of God, and contain the spark of life that connects us to God, who is the source of life. Look at recent videos documenting the very instant of conception, and there is a brilliant flash of light when egg and sperm unite. Gospel of John, Chapter 1, verses 1-5, 9-10. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.” “That was the true Light {Jesus Christ}, that lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not.”
Everything is possible if God desires to do so.
Y muchas más que no sabemos.... 💙☺️🙏🎶
To compose a musical masterpiece that is to be played by an orchestra of instruments is an outstanding achievement, to compose a masterpiece that is written for human voices is divine.
Humans are divine, as is the world around them. Yet few know it. It is why there is religion, philosophy, and science. Godspeed pilgrim.

I love the use of the bass voices to give it a firm foundation. I sang bass/low bass in high school, still love hearing those parts.
Agreed, absolutely stunning
Agreed.
I have heard Choral Music works from many composers within many time periods and always thought I've heard that most "perfect piece to beat all the others". Then this comes along and it knocks everything into the corner. Listen to the range, to the perfection of the choir as they all sing faultlessly. A perfect piece of music.
This composition, which I did not know it belonged to the Russian genius, is by far one of the most powerful choral works ever written, after Allegri's Miserere and Barber's Agnus Dei. My mind has been blown away.
Mine as well
Si no lo conoces, deberías escuchar también la primera pieza de la Liturgia de San Juan Crisóstomo de S.Rachmaninov
Gregorio Allegri: Miserere mei, Deus - St. Johns College Choir, Cambridge

Why should ANYbody be upset that they cried, especially for happiness?? Do you not know that tears send floods of endorphins to your brain?? They’re the biologically attuned happiness chemical we all receive as a huge gift from God or whomever your spiritually attuned to.
