  • "The ability to "self regulate" while under pressure comes after the horse has had the opportunity to "find safety" multiple times under relatively low pressure. One has to actually practice to SHOW the horse that mentally finding safety is the answer. After the horse has some experience in this self regulation. He can find it on his own under pressure. If the horse does not know how to self regulate under pressure, they are victims of their own neurochemistry and will default to the built in defensive circuitry (high sympathetic arousal resulting in increased norepinepherine (adrenaline) and cortisol (stress hormones). At this high level of sympathetic arousal, you lose the horse and you are done." Dr. Stephen Peters

Watching Martin in action in the round pen, is truly a pleasure and a tremendous learning opportunity - if you have the ability to get to his place for a clinic or two, you really should.

To saddle and allow them to buck is one of the cruelest things a person can do mentally.
You have just trained them to buck. Non violence my ass,

No thanks, my colts get the first saddling to buck after that, it's off the table. Not saying this trainer's method is wrong, i just can't ride bucking very well. Used to use a pony horse when i was younger, now colt starting is boot camp on ground work for a good long while. When i first start riding, i ride all gaits, forward, forward, we do that several rides. Then it's softening, moving body parts, etc. Not quick but no bucking or unraveling later on.
