- The Super Mario Bros Movie Movie Review 2023
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a 2023 computer-animated adventure film based on Nintendo's Mario video game franchise. Produced by Illumination, Universal Pictures, and Nintendo, and distributed by Universal, it was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. The ensemble voice cast includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, Sebastian Maniscalco, Charles Martinet, and Kevin Michael Richardson.
After the critical and commercial failure of the 1993 live-action Mario film, Nintendo became reluctant to license its intellectual properties for film adaptations. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto became interested in developing another film when Nintendo was bringing its older games to the Virtual Console service, and through Nintendo's work with Universal Parks & Resorts to create Super Nintendo World, he met Illumination founder Chris Meledandri. By 2016, the two were discussing a Mario film and, in January 2018, Nintendo announced that it would collaborate with Illumination and Universal to produce it. Production was underway by 2020, and the cast was announced in September 2021.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered in Los Angeles on April 1, 2023. It is scheduled for release in the North America on April 5, 2023, and in Japan on April 28, 2023.

Are you EXCITED for the Mario movie?!
Yes I am I love illumination and Mario I’m seeing it in imax tomorrow
Hope you love it Brandon!
I'm watching the movie on April 7 I'm very excited 😁😁😁
Hope you love it!
im watching it tomorrow with my parents and again on Thursday with a girl from work who has 2 kids that shes bringing. im 40 years old i have been playing Mario sense Atari. and everything that came after. i cant wait to see this movie. i don't need cake with my icing its Mario it doesn't need substance. it doesn't need char growth. it just needs to be a Mario movie and sounds like it delivers.
I haven’t even watched it, and I’m still like
“I don’t care about the story”
I don’t.
I don’t fucking care.
It’s EVERYTHING else.
I’m here for eye candy, I’m here for references. I’m here for the love of the game, and I think I’m going to get exactly that.
I’ve said from day one “I hope the score is perfect”
That’s what I want. I’m a fan 🤷🏼
I’m a fan too, but I Just gotta be honest. If you’re looking for the “nostalgia drug” then this is it!
@@BrandoCritic It’s literally all I want from a Mario movie. I’m going tomorrow.
Well there ya go! Hope the eye candy, references and love of the game live up to your expectations and absolutely love the movie!
@@BrandoCritic I think I’m going to 😊
I also respect the criticism just an fyi! I was… expecting the story to be a bit lackluster, from day one.
It’s Mario!
I’ve said it a few times now to my friends, I’m not really looking forward to this movie as a stand out, I’m looking at, Zelda, Metroid, and Star Fox. I’m not even a huge Star Fox fan and I’m like “Gimme”
A Luigi’s Mansion movie, Id love
The movie was great. The only thing that doesn't make sense is Mario & Luigi both using the super star because Luigi isn't the hero in this movie, he's not even the sidekick, he's the damsel in distress. Giving him the star is like giving Daphne the keys to the mystery van.
Hahaha right
I'm not going to argue writing is "easy" but compared to the miracles these animators appear to have pulled off I just don't understand how the pen-to-paper part is where so many movies lately completely whiff it.
I feel like the studios don't really care about it as most audiences are not that smart
The story isn't even bad, don't exaggerate.
Might be their own opinion Scott
@@BrandoCritic No.
Haha "No"... I'm here saying "yes". People have different opinions. Opinions that you won't always agree with
I am not looking for Shakespeare in a Mario movie. However, when Zelda and Metroid hits the theater I will be expecting puzzles in the story. Mario is meant for children, but Zelda and Metroid are made for teenagers and adults. Unless you are my 7 year old son who dominates both franchises.
Thanks for your opinion James!
IT DOES NOT SUCK
Never said it did Seb! ;)
Couldn't agree more with this review. My wife is a huge Nintendo fan so we went to see it together. She loved it. I'm not a Nintendo guy, myself, but was able to find enjoyment in the movie, just as a fun, goofy, family friendly film.
I was worried from the way it started that they would have Mario and Luigi have some sort of falling out that they would have to make up by the end in order to beat Bowser. So glad they didn't go that route. So many movies these days seem to make internal conflict between the 'good guys' a big storyline, and I'm kinda tired of that trope.
Thanks man! Glad you at least had an enjoyable time with it!
There were several GC references. The start-up ringtone, the vibe from Luigi's Mansion, and hints to Mario Sunshine.
What hints to Mario Sunshine?
I’m really interested to hear how Charlie Day was as Luigi. I am a huge fan of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and there’s a ton of Charlie’s characterizations that I’m hoping made it into the movie.
He was really good! Didn't mention him in the video, but he's a perfect casting
I just wrapped up watching the film, PERFECT casting.
@@Boxman487 I’m seeing it tonight and I can’t wait!
Hope you love it Jeb!
Thank you for the movie review, Brandon! I'm hoping to see it this weekend. Looks pretty good. I've been playing Super Mario Bros since the 80's and 90's, brings back my childhood.
Me too! Hope you love it Jason!
@BrandoCritic is their a donkey Kong vs bowser fight? Like a Godzilla vs king kong
Well, they do fight… but I wouldn’t compare the two. Sure, I guess Reptile vs. Gorilla, but in a MUCH smaller scale
Haters:this movie sucks
Fans:this movie was awsome
Me:I thought it was mediocre
Both of them:*attacks me like a pack of wolves*
That's the internet for you
TTYD has one of the best story lines of any Mario game. An adaptation of that could be pretty great. I'm not saying it would need to attempt the paper aesthetic. Just inspiration from the story itself.
Interesting! I have played that game once or twice AGES ago!
Super paper Mario had a good one as well. I also loved the story line for origami king, it was simpler but was still interesting enough
I don't think any references from those show up here... I didn't notice them
My kids and I played the first Mario Brothers on Nintendo. We played a few other iterations and enjoyed them all, but I honestly can't say I want to see this movie. It does kinda make me want to play the old game again, though.
When watching this movie, all I wanted to do was play Mario when I got home
I need to know... As the biggest Mario fan, I just want to know ONE thing... Was there any Paper Mario references in the movie?
I didn’t see any :(
Of course there's no character development. This is Super Mario Bros.
It's not what they were going for.
You mean "not" what they were going for?
Yes, I mention that in the video... but you ARE making a movie, and I believe you need that for a movie...
@BrandoCritic The Street Fighter II animated movie also had zero character development and yet it remains a fan favorite.
I haven’t seen that one yet so I can’t give my opinion on it. That’s great that it’s a fan favourite! All I am doing is sharing my personal experience with the film
During the mariokart scene, they were referencing Double Dash from GameCube
What in particular? Also, I was more or less talking about Super Mario Sunshine being absent from the references
Was there any Paper Mario references? I need to know!! Even if it's just the smallest detail in a song?
I didn’t notice any… maybe there was a song but nothing comes to mind
I would rate it a 4 or 5 just because of the fan service, details, and animation.
Thats great Cayden!
Does it totally make up for that live action Super Mario disaster from the 90’s?
Yes!
I Really loved this movie! It's a faithful adaptation of the games!
Also if your gonna watch Teen Titans, watch the original.
Hearing you praise the score already lets me know this is a Top 10-Top 20 film score lol
Haha thanks!
@@BrandoCritic no problem man! Love the work!
Thank you so much! Hope to see you again in future comments sections
@@BrandoCritic you too! I plan on seeing this movie again!
Hey did you watch RRR movie? It's an Indian epic historical movie. It was released last year and won an Oscar for music. This movie was loved by many people around the world including james Cameron, Steven Spielberg, Edgar wright and JJ Abrams etc.
Yes I have! I have a review for it on my channel!
Have seen the movie. It's like being in a game, it went quickly from A to B with a lot of action so that there is not much depth in the plot, and there is so much fan service that the movie is meant only for the fans and to arouse interest from others. Mario and Luigi were ordinary plumbers who recently started out on their own when they came out for challenges in everyday life; before they found a mysterious room filled with pipes - including a green one. Mario and Donkey Kong as expected were enemies in the beginning. Bowser was masterfully played as an evil and oversensitive ruler who will destroy anyone if he doesn't get what he wants. It will be his downfall; he is humiliated at the end. The movie is action from beginning to end.
Thanks for the insight!
Personally I loved the movie, I'm probably going to see it again. Jack black as Bowser nailed it along with his songs that he sings, absolutely awesome and pretty funny
Glad you loved it
First Mario game for me was Super Mario Bros back in 1988. :)
Great game!
This and The Last Of Us Tv Show are by far the best adaptations of popular video games
Haven't seen it yet
Nice review, Brando! I'm a diehard Mario guy, so I'm ready for this. I need a Luigi's Mansion movie though...
Who knows... you will probably get one!
I've been playing since NES. I'm a super high Mario fan. I love Mario 3. I am going to see it in an hour and I'm excited! WaaHooo!
Based off what I've seen. Anyone who knows Mario will enjoy it. I'm also a fan of the original cartoon... which some of the story draws from.
Hope you like it!
@@BrandoCritic Just got done. I loved it. Definitely could have a been a little longer. But, I was okay with the fast moving story.
Glad you thought so
I'll be watching this one this coming Tuesday on my day off! I couldn't watch it last week because I had to save my money for food! 😄 Even though I stopped being a gamer years ago, I still love Mario! Super Mario Bros. 2 from the old Nintendo was one of the last video games I ever played. I agree with everything you said in the review and I will keep that in mind when I watch this movie! 😊
Wow! Long time ago!
@@BrandoCritic I know! I'm so old! 😄😄
I've only played a few Mario games, one I've played one of the Mario Cart games and another older one. i got my ticket for tomorrow, kind of looking forward to seeing it. while Super Mario is not something I am super attached to, think the movie looks kind of interesting and the animation looks awesome. Do you think in your opinion, if the movie does very well, do you think, it will make other studios try to take a crack at other video game properties, that haven't been adapted yet?)
Oh most definitely! This movie wouldn't have been green lit if it wasn't for the success of Sonic The Hedgehog
I watched this movie in 4DX and it made the film infinitely more enjoyable. It felt like an hour and a half long thrill ride.
Yep! It's a theme park attraction
Some of these comments are so funny. It’s very obvious they didn’t watch the video. I see people are getting very upset at critics if it’s not a 5 out of 5 rating. In the case of your review all the points are there. Either way ill see it this weekend and give it a try.
Haha that's the internet for you hahaha
Sorry if you criticize, but thinking about the exciting Super Mario Bros. Movie also makes me think about my currently imaginary characters a lot. I really really really wish they were no longer imaginary. I imagine Mario, Luigi, and the others meeting new characters. I wish they were mages named Kiemonte, Sunari, Neyla, Xavior, Gerodi, and Jalrez. I will be excited to watch the movie on late April though.
Hope you like the movie Aaron!
@@BrandoCritic Yes, sure, I hope so as well. Thank you very much. Sorry to ask, but nothing to say or ask me about my characters? Sorry if you do not know what to say or ask about them, but I like them a lot.
No questions. You have your imagination and that’s that
@@BrandoCritic Hmm, well, um, sorry for expecting a lot from you. Sorry😐😐.
I think it's just meant to be a FUN movie.
Like I said in the movie, I DID have fun with it
I'm not being mean, just emphasizing the fact that I said it was fun. No nastiness here
Agree with everything. Just came out and had a lot of fun but there’s really nothing to it. Its a nostalgia trip, very well made and I did have a couple of lol moments, I also have to say that those moments was me laughing and the rest of the movie theater didn’t even laugh. All the kids did clap at the end and cheer.
Thanks Juan! Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Brandon, great review with some great points. Even if it is totally worth the watch at least once that is good for a long time fan..to see and know all the references and feel the nostalgia will feel great. I've been playing these games since the original NES. lol. My favorite character was always Yoshi. Your review was very honest and on point which is really cool. Another great job dude. Looking forward to many more soon. Always wishing you the best and have an awesome night☺👊
Yoshi is AWESOME! Thanks Mike!
I already Saw thé movie its so good!👨🔧👨🔧👨🔧
Glad you loved it!
Glad to hear that you enjoyed it. Had a lot of hope for this movie.
Hope you love it!
As someone who has never been huge Mario fan or video game fan i was still looking this movie, it because looked pretty fun and colorful and i have always had soft spot for those type of movies and i dont wanna see movie fail.
I didnt expect this movie to be animated masterpiece like Beauty And The Beast.
Only thing i wanted to have good and fun time in movie theater and escape reality for some hours and movie did its job and i was happy at end 😊.
Im pretty sure kids will like this movie.
Great review Brandon and take care and stay safe 👍.
Thanks buddy! Glad you enjoyed it!
@@BrandoCritic This movie was a blast 🤩.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great review Mr Brando! good seeing you again!
🥰🥰🥰
It's an excellent movie. Go see it, I'm going again.
Glad you loved it Craig!
looking forward to watch in the theater. I texted my cousin if we can go see it tomorrow' he said what about Thursday? I'm ok with it.
That's great Cam!
@@BrandoCritic thanks Brandon
You’re welcome
I watched it a couple of hours ago, and it was AWSOME! But we could have seen a bit more luigi.
Glad you loved it!
I really think this will make a ton of money in the box office for sure. I think 4 months in at 2023, we are getting lack of animation. This, Spiderverse, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will please probably young and older generations. Great review 👍
Thanks Alex! Hope you love this one!
I think he means we haven’t had animation for a while
thank you for another great movie review! I love Jack Black so I might have to watch this one :)
You will LOVE HIM in this!
great review here my dude and honestly I'm pumped to see the movie this friday and I'm a huge super mario fan myself and after hearing so many good things about this animated movie i'm ready to see what it has to offer :)
I hope you love it dude!
@@BrandoCritic I'm sure I will I'll be posting my review on it as soon as I see it :)
Hope it does well!
@@BrandoCritic I have faith it will
3.5 for a non fan is a 1 score.
Sorry?
I don't get why people have a problem with movies having a simple plot.
There is a difference between being "simple" and being "incomplete"
@@BrandoCritic Nah, you're just exaggerating, the story and the characters are simple and there's nothing wrong with that.
Sorry Scott, just stating my honest opinion… and there’s nothing wrong with that
@@BrandoCritic I was giving my opinion too.
I understand that Scott. Thank you for doing so
I went to see "Dungeons and dragons" today. I really liked it. And I watched "Tetris" last night. Really enjoyed that one too. Not gonna see "Super Mario bros" at theaters. Never played the game, don't really care. I'm going to go see "Air" this weekend 😉
Air is the movie to see! It’s fantastic!
Super mario bros > air
Haha can’t agree with ya on that one buddy
It was very disappointing. It was only “okay.” Not bad, but not really all that good.
I understand that!
I saw it and I was happy from start to finish
That's great Anthony!
Best review for this movie I've seen so far! 👌
Wow, thanks! May I ask what makes it so special?
@@BrandoCritic Most of the videos I have watched (mostly movie critics on youtube) are trying so hard to give a positive review bcoz it's nostalgic to them; I think to negate the rotten RT scores 🤷🏻♂️ and yours is quite balance review.
Thanks buddy! I just gotta be honest! And that normally makes many people upset haha
@@BrandoCritic I also really appreciate your honesty. It makes your review all the more enjoyable because it comes from a genuine place.👍
Thank you Dusk! I really appreciate that!
Yes I will see this film. Great review. Much appreciated!
Thank you so much!!!
I'm seeing it Easter Sunday
Hope you love it Michael!
Um that impression was spot on😂
Of Mario?? Haha
@@BrandoCritic yes! Literally perfect both times loll
Hahahaha “Welcome to Mario Kart”
Been playing Mario since NES. Interested in seeing it but I'll wait for streaming for sure
Sounds good Jack! Hope you love it!
Don’t you like Mario and Peach’s relationship in this movie? Ik they didn’t set up a romance here
Sure. They were cute, but I miss actual love and romance in movies...
@@BrandoCritic how come they didn’t kiss each other on the lips in the movie?
It's not "the fashion" to have that happen in movies anymore...
@@BrandoCritic why is that
I think it's the politics of today. Women are supposed to be independent and not rely on a man for anything... Generally speaking, that is the idea behind female characters now
Cant wait to see this movie, great movie review brandon.
Thank you so much James!
I loved it. I thought the story was perfect.
Glad it worked for you
I'm seeing Mario tomorrow.
Hope you love it Alex!
@@BrandoCritic Mario is fine and Air should be better.
I think AIR is better
I saw this movie and liked it. Nice in keeping faithful to the games which I like the games
I like them too Cole!
@@BrandoCritic One kids video game franchise that need an animated movie is Skylanders. Awesome video game series I grew up with playing on the Wii that began in 2006 and was very popular at the time, it was also on PS3, and Xbox 360.
I’d like to see a new Skylanders game and an animated movie adaptation
Never played Skylanders
@@BrandoCritic Fun game series, unfortunately it’s only stuck on Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360.
That's okay! Those are all great consoles!
No it doesn’t suck WHY
Watch the video and I explain if it does or doesn't ;)
Rodrigo, Did u even watch the movie yet?
Some people just really want certain movies to be good...
Are you reading this comment?
Yes I am
The critics are trashing this movie lmfao it's definitely gonna flop
There have been plenty of movies that the critics trashed and yet the audiences bought their tickets and it made a boat load of money
@@BrandoCritic but audience today have 0 interest towards Nintendo
Bruh the reviews have been great lol what are u looking at
@@chr0n1cle55 it rotten on rotten tomatoes
Literally every review I've seen has been positive so far, you're just making stuff up. Which is especially apparent in your "but audience today have 0 interest towards Nintendo" comment. Nintendo is more popular than it has ever been.
