I wish more people would first time this very much overlooked song. There's a video that goes along with this. You won't be disappointed in watching it. They play it behind the band on a big screen when in concert.
Rush has so many great songs, it's so hard to pick ! There's a song from the early 90's, a lesser known song that I think is great, Everyday Glory. It's just about regular people trying to do the right thing, taking accountability, and trying to make the world a better place .
Congrats on knowing what it was about. You said the lyrics were obvious but that is only the case if you know your history. I saw another reactor who had no clue what this song was about can only assume no knowledge that Atom Bomb. I was just starting typing a comment to say rising sun = Japan when you caught that :).
The Chinese name for Japan is "the land of the rising sun". Japan's flag is a red circle against a white background, symbolizing the sun. "Shot down the rising sun." is a clever way to describe Japan's forced surrender due to the two bombs which were detonated in Japan within 3 days. There were plans to drop a third bomb (a second Fat Man bomb) two weeks later (Aug 19) if they hadn't surrendered, and it is rumoured that the target would have been Tokyo.
The rising sun was also Japans symbol on their flag!
"Just fading out..." never leave a Rush song earlier; you will usually miss out.
This song and Territories are incredible songs from Power Windows with incredible lyrics.👍
I agree!
Agreed, but Middletown Dreams is the best IMHO!

Yeah! You make a good point. Ignorant people definitely would be lost on this song!
One of my favorite Rush songs. “The pilots of the Enola Gay flying out of the shockwave on that August day…”
The Rising sun is Japan.
It’s literally their national flag logo.

Japan was called “The Land of the Rising Sun” The Japanese Flag 🇯🇵 is supposed to represent the sun
