It opens with the camera’s ‘POV’ weaving through the gears of Richard Parker’s watch, and ends with a final battle in the gears of a clock tower in which time _does_ sadly run out for one of the primary characters. I guess where a lot of it missed the mark is that it’s uncharacteristically dark next to the generally light source material / brightly-coloured cinematic fare, but I still like and salute a film that dares to do something else. And I felt the merging of Harry’s / Max’s stories was fairly coherent and logical.
I DGAF, I like this movie! First off, Dane DeHaan is legitimately beautiful, almost elven-like, if that makes sense. There's a sinister tinge to his beauty as well, along with his vulnerability, both which are perfect for playing this kind of role. Despite the studio's dumb choices, not a single person can say that Dane, Andrew, Emma, Sally, or some others didn't put their all into their acting! That's why I can't hate the movie. This was a really good exchange, great acting, tension, drama, music, etc.

Honestly… This isn’t even that bad. At the very least, the character motivations come together in a way that is both sensible and symmetrical. Max wanted to be Spider-Man’s friend, but was rejected. Harry needed _Peter’s_ friendship, and got rejected. Both happened for somewhat valid reasons, but they’re both unstable enough that it sent them on the same path: let’s go get Spider-Man. I kinda dig it.
This Harry was far more well-rounded and motivated. This Harry was sent away by his father, he's rejected even when his father was on his death bed, he's an orphan, he's dying from a disease he got from the father who never loved him, his supposed best friend won't help him so he can find a cure, AND he got kicked out of the company he was supposed to inherit. He was a decent guy at first who was pushed to the breaking point because he's dying and desperate and has nothing and no one. If something can be said about Harry in the Raimi films, his "development" wasn't very good. Even his dad was with him and just lightly criticized him, like, once, and paid attention to Peter. But you didn't get a sense of him withholding love from Harry entirely like the Norman/Harry relationship in this movie. This Harry, despite studio meddling, was a multi-layered character.

The one thing this movie had was so much potential. Like it felt like it all should've been something amazing but the way it was written just fell flat. TASM movies are a great example of why scripts/writing is the most important part of making a successful movie, because you can’t deny that the acting in these movies were A1, music almost always slapped, the camera work was beautiful, and the CGI/practical effects were balanced well but the movies still underperformed with the public because of the poor writing. Also I love this scene, I’d argue this is the highlight of the movie outside the clock fight. Most people hate on Dehan’s version of Harry but this scene was really amazing acting from both Dehan and Foxx, Harry pleading for help with Max and telling him how he needs him, that he “sees him” which is all Max ever wanted from the people in his life. I think what would have saved this film is if this was made into two films, with TASM 2 having Electro and Rhino going to prison by the end of it and in TASM 3 Harry busts Electro and the rest out to form the Sinister 6. I think the pacing would have worked more to better develop Max as a antagonist and to allow the audience to better understand Harry’s struggles with his declining health and his company/fathers shady business behind closed doors.
