      @@user-li6sh3ml5h Spoilers for The Answer and a bit of Persona 4 Arena. Just placing enough text here so anyone (including the Partners) can avoid it if they want.
      Well, I was trying to avoid talking about this, but yeah, you're half-right. IIRC, the Great Seal is not for actually locking Nyx away (which is why death still happens after P3). It's for stopping Erebus from reaching Nyx from inside the Sea of Souls/Collective Unconscious (the "outer space" we see at the end of this game _and_ where they fight Erebus in The Answer), those two reuniting is what would cause the Fall to happen. Nyx herself simply _went away_ when the protagonist did the seal, as she could no longer hear Erebus' call. She's probably just chilling with the protagonist inside the Sea of Souls.
      I said you're half-right because as Akinari came back for that last speech before the protagonist got the Universe, there's sort of an implication that the Sea of Souls doubles as a form of the afterlife in the Persona series. Since the Seal is there, it means he _is_ in the afterlife, but he's stuck as the Seal.
      It's revealed in P4A Elizabeth wants to find a way to free him from the Seal without risking the rest of humanity, just so he can move on "properly". And the way this was worded led to copium from the fandom that he would come back (despite the fact that his body is long dead even by that point)

    To answer your questions: Yes, the Protagonist did die at the very end due to the "Great Seal" taking up all of his HP. He was actually supposed to die on Jan 31st but he lived up to March 5th only so that he could fulfill his promise to his friends.
    As for why Aigis was not reacting the way she was supposed to was because she genuinely thought that Makoto (the protag) was simply exhausted. She then starts tearing up at the end and questions her tears because she being a machine was somewhat able to detect that Makoto was slowly dying but didn't think about it a lot as this was supposed to be their "Happy Reunion"

  • @Cinnamowo

    Honestly, having finally played Persona 3, I realised why Makoto is such a beloved protagonist. The further into the story you go the more you realise just how much he cares for his friends and how they changed him. The Reload version of Burn My Dread is really personal to Makoto, it perfectly characterises him. "I'm ready to seize the day, 'cause I know in your hearts there's a spot for me, believing in me gave me possibilities, it's more like a gift that I don't deserve, so I gotta give it back to you by all means". The whole song is incredible
    I am honestly still heartbroken, even after sacrificing himself for them he still holds on until the graduation just to keep his promise. Truly the most remarkable guest, worthy of The Universe...
    And now, having finished Persona 3 and having seen some things from P4 Arena... I actually realise that Persona 3-5 entries are more connected than I thought they are. I actually believe now that Persona 6 can pretty much be some kind of grand finale for the overall story (I think I also heard some discussions over how the outcome of P5 ending goes back to P3, but I am not sure). Actually, looking back now, P5 really broke a lot of constants, especially the ones that were related to the Velvet Room, which makes me even more hyped for P6

    • @VelvetAura
      @VelvetAura Месяц назад +2

      I don't want to say too much as some context involves story details that are covered in the DLC that's releasing later this year, but the games are pretty connected overall and Persona 3 is what ties the old to the new. You have drops like the Nanjo Group being involved with the Kirijos which would make sense considering Kei Nanjo would have known about Personas as he has one himself. You also have the fact that Nyx is the progenitor of all Shadows and more or less death itself, so even after the ending of Persona 3 Nyx still has left a mark on and has influence over the world behind the Great Seal. Not to mention that Nyx exists outside the bounds of the collective unconscious and does not rely on humanity's cognition to exist, unlike every other final boss in Persona. That seal is the only thing stopping the fall from happening unless, like Ryoji mentioned, more people were to be like the individuals in SEES. This is a major reason why people say Persona 5's collective unconscious cognition change ties back to Persona 3.
      We also know from Arena and 4 Golden that Elizabeth left the Velvet Room on her own journey, becoming a Wild Card user herself (and using Thanatos as her main in Arena no less). In games like PQ 1 and 2 and even Persona 3 Dancing, Elizabeth has lines that hint at the fact that because the Velvet Room exists outside of time and space, the Elizabeth who interacts with Makoto and the others in those games knows his fate the whole time. I feel like all of this has to come into play at some point. The common theory is that like a Wild Card user would, Elizabeth is going around trying to find more Persona users in order to do something involving humanity and the collective unconscious.
      P.S. Makoto is my favorite Persona protag and I'm really glad to see him getting more of the love he deserves. :) I find him to be one of the more relatable protags and I love how much he embodies the themes of the story itself. The movies, manga, and spinoff titles really helped give him some more depth than the original games had, but it was all there from the beginning and Reload simply emphasizes it more than ever, which I really appreciate. I think every character is represented and expanded on wonderfully in this game, and I gained a new appreciation for all of them despite having been a P3 fan for over a decade now.

    • @NessBrawl64
      @NessBrawl64 Месяц назад +2

      @@VelvetAura Just to add a little more, Nyx herself is also a callback to Persona 1's Snow Queen Quest, although there she was just named "Night Queen" (which, well, came back as a reference here). The 3 main dungeons of that route were all towers named after Nyx's children, and they all return as Personas in this game (Hypnos, Nemesis and Thanatos). P3FES and P3P even lets you use a remix of the main theme for that route as BGM for Tartarus.
      Another thing I liked in P1 is that it recontextualizes just how much weaker people can be against the supernatural enemies without a Persona, with the gimmick for one of its dungeons being that you temporarily lost your Persona if you died, and until you reclaimed it you'd get hit for massive damage, enough to one-shot _even if you had 999 HP._ This made a few moments later in the series hit harder, like the part everyone else is dragged into the Dark Hour here

      @VelvetAura Месяц назад +1

      @@NessBrawl64 I always found that interesting, especially since the Snow Queen route isn't canon is it?
      Also yes that was cool! I really like how the characters' stats even in the more modern titles are more reflective of their Personas than themselves, and it emphasizes that having a Persona is the only way to effectively kill the Demons/Shadows, but I would like to see another sequence like that again in a future game

    • @NessBrawl64
      @NessBrawl64 Месяц назад +2

      @@VelvetAura I'd argue it is canon, but P1 is in a weird spot canonically because P2 implies the events of both routes happened in some way. It seems the party members you didn't have any chance to recruit during SQQ did part of SEBEC off-screen and call for your help in SQQ's ending (or something like that), and SQQ ends right as your party is going to help them. And midway through SEBEC, the school just disappears out of nowhere, which implies the events of SQQ are happening inside it.
      In other words, both routes seem to be canon, but we never get to see how both of them played out together in-game. I wouldn't be surprised if a P1 remake just tried to merge them; thanks to what I just said, SQQ could easily be rewritten as the first few arcs of the game and then lead into SEBEC. I remember the manga did just that, but it can't be used as an 1:1 adaptation for the game

    There is a lot to unpack here! The fight against Nyx was incredible! Loved the new additions and when the music hits it hits hard. I like the simbols in the fight, us being the Messiah and freeing the world and saving it. The fact that we got the universe arcana, what was the biggest accomplished between all Persona protagonists! The last send of and talking with all confidants and the best one was absolutely Akinari or should I say Akinari's mother, that conversation hit so hard! 😢😭❤ Or the funny moment when the teacher finds out who Tatsuya really is... 😂🤣

    2:08:30 man, Evan just spitting facts that many people have on their minds.
    That's why some people blame social links for that because in this game even Persona Evolutions are story-related and don't happen at the end of the social link.

    • @JJ_R
      @JJ_R Месяц назад +1

      I would prefer Social Links with party members still be a thing, but not have their Persona evolutions tied to them. They did it great with this game’s female (male if you’re playing the Female MC in P3P) party members, so I hope Persona 6 (whenever that comes out) also goes that route.

    • @_Lis25
      @_Lis25 Месяц назад +2

      @@JJ_R I'm not saying to remove them, but P3 also has a big advantage of blocking party members behind max stats and time locks. And that social link stuff development goes alongside their story development.
      People complain about requirements but it makes them even better that you don't get best buddies buddies the instant they join the team. Instead, you get to first meet the town's folks. It's because the Persona developers have to have in mind that someone will max the social link in 10 days. And that it has to fit the story.
      Yosuke probably had his romance cut exactly because of this reason, because what if someone started to romance him right before the Kanji stuff? Now imagine if Yosuke was unlocked after we went through half of the game.
      That's why I hope that they will continue the linked episodes in the future games even if there's a downside to them being time-restricted. Because I think they're miles better than Social Links and they could allow things like Yosuke romance for example.

    • @DeRedBaronCT

      @JJ_R Месяц назад

      @@_Lis25 The biggest problem is trying to cram in the time needed to complete all 21+ Social Links *and* having Linked Episodes for all of your party members. Sure, some progress with the story (like Fool & Judgement), but unless more than 3 of the others also progress with only time, having Linked Episodes with all 6+ party members is gonna be tough.
      Or they can do what this game did and only have the Linked Episodes be tied to the non-romance party members (depending on if they make the main character a girl again).

    A cool detail during the battle against Nyx itself (the egg with hands) is that when the protagonist has gathered enough power to cast the Great Seal, the menu merely shows his silhouette, without needing an Evoker, or to summon a Persona. In the later Persona games, the protagonist summons an ultimate Persona (Izanagi-no-okami, Satanael) through the power of friendship, but here, our boi is using a skill by himself. He has literally transcended normal world limits and done the impossible.

    Welp, you know what time it is everyone. *The Arcana is the means by which is revealed.*
    Personally, as much as I love the other final boss themes, personally "The Battle for Everyone's Souls" is probably the best final battle theme from a Persona game, literally remix's the Velvet Room into the boss. The other final boss themes sounds a tad more epic, but this theme has much more meaning behind it.
    Although I really wish the new Nyx fight was made just a little harder, they REALLY needed to make Reload harder overall to compensate having full party control. The same thing happened with P3P where giving the player full control of the party makes the game much easier than FES. But overall a phenomenal final act, the updated tech and graphics give the story a much more powerful feeling. And no, while he's going through the Arcanas, he's only going through the SHADOW Arcanas.
    I know some people aren't really a fan of Nyx Avatar's new voice played by Aleks Le because it "sounds more empathetic to the characters and doesn't sound scary like the original" That is LITERALLY the point of his Arcana lines. 0-12 are him remembering his time as Pharos and Ryoji and trying to determine if humanity is worth living. 13, Death is Nyx determineing it's not. Lorewise, Ryoji was Nyx's avatar trying decide if it should bring about the fall. It ultimately decided it should and therfore on 12/31 makes you decide your path. Nyx Avatar, as Pharos, was living inside Makoto. This changed it fundamentally when we formed a link with it. But it still ultimately decided that humanity should meet its end. Hence the 13th 'Death' line.

And if you go up to the music room before that, he mentions how he remembers a melody being played there once and how it's going to be with him forever. And I honestly think that's really sweet. When Pharos disappeared on 11/4, he remembered his purpose and should've left to bring ruin to the world. But he came back because he wanted to see Pixel/Makoto again. He defied his fate for the person he cared about. Now, when Makoto makes the ultimate sacrifice, he should be gone. But he also returns to say farewell to those he cares about. Saying goodbye to the people you love caused Ryoji and Pixel to defy the fate set before them. Even if only for a little while. This was an amazing game. And an amazing remake. Love the Persona series so much.

    So this is the end, huh? Guess I'd better get my thoughts in order, cause this emotional rollercoaster deserves my honest review!
    I've heard a lot of people say 5 has the best gameplay, 4 has the best characters, and 3 has the best story. While I disagree with 4, I have to say 3 lived up to the hype and then some, cause holy crap, this was the best Persona game story-wise by far! And the characters, too... While 5's Yusuke & Futaba are still my all-time favorites, 3's cast blows 4's out of the water, and unlike 4 & 5, this game didn't have any teammates that I actively disliked. And the character development! 4 & 5 had good character development too, but with this game, *every* character on the team is so well-written and has such a good arc, and while Ikutsuki & Strega definitely weren't as prominent as the TV World killer or the mental shutdown culprit, they still played the roles they were given pretty well!
    From a gameplay standpoint, I really appreciate all the ways they changed Reload to make it feel more like P5/P5R, but Tartarus is still a bit of a sore spot. It has a leg up on P4's dungeons because they at least *tried* to make it more interesting with Monad Doors and the Clock Dimension, but it's still mostly just "Walk through randomly-generated floors, fight Shadows, open chests, rinse and repeat for 260 floors". But hey, this was one of the earlier Persona games, so I'm willing to give it a pass.
    In conclusion, here's how I'd rank the 3 games (from worst to best). Gameplay: 4, 3, 5; Characters: 4, 5, 3; Story: 4, 5, 3

    • @Loner098

    Makoto's death truly and fully embodies the themes of this game: "Memento mori, memento vivere." Remember that you will die, remember that you must live. Live life in a way that people will be able to say that you truly _lived._ And Pixel did _exactly_ that. He gave his life to protect his friends so that _they_ could live. He lived to protect those precious to him, therefore, he was ready to die to do the same.
    As Yukari said, "Living means looking death square in the face." Living means acknowledging that you will die and choosing to live life to the fullest, not despairing and losing hope. And so, after giving his life to protect his friends, looking death square in the face while doing it, and staying alive through sheer force of will to fulfill the promise he made with his friends, he was ready to die.
    Whatever you do doesn't have to be on the same scale as what Pixel did, though. "It doesn't take a grand gesture. You don't have to make a big production of it. If you love someone, let them know it." Do something meaningful for someone else, no matter how big or small it is. Let them know you love them. The bond you share with them is irreplaceable. Many people don't realize that until it's too late, and they're clinging to the other person's cold, dead hands. Do something for them while they're still here. Because those bonds of friendship you share with them are what make you feel... _alive._

    When this game was announced I was like "huh, cool", having played like 90% of P3Portable and generally knowing how the game ends, I doubted I would get too excited for it. Eventually the trailers, gameplay footage and other stuff got me more interested, and I ended up preordering. When I finally got the game, I realized just how actually gorgeous the artstyle is, and how they perfectly carried over the thematic flair of Persona 5 in a new way, and I was hooked.
    The points you made about the cast being best in this game I 100% agree with. I would in fact extend it to (mostly) everyone in the game. I really enjoy a lot of the resolutions to different Social Links here. There are so many characters who are written really well and really realistically. Even though I was on my fourth full playthrough of a Persona game for the first time, it didn't feel like more of the same, all of it still felt special.
    I think the overall story of this game is phenomenal. I have so much more I could say, but I don't think it's worth trying to put it all down here. All I can say is that the game's tagline really hits home after taking it all in.
    "Remember you will die. Remember you have lived."
    Thank you for playing this game.

    So, according to some out-of-game sources, Nyx isn't a god born from the minds of humans like other Persona final bosses. Supposedly, she was an eldritch being that crashed into the Earth a very long time ago. Her body and her psyche separated in the crash, and the body became the Moon while her psyche remained on Earth, almost killing the primitive life there. That's when life on Earth evolved the Collective Unconscious, to seal Nyx's psyche within it. However, because of this, pieces of Nyx's mind remain in every living thing on Earth, and these are where Shadows come from.
    So Nyx isn't born from the minds of people. In a way, people's minds were born from HER. And the Fall is when her body, the Moon, is called back down to Earth to reunite with her psyche, bringing about the end of the world.

    The fight really would've been a lot more challenging if Nyx Avatar can do 2 actions per turn like the original then stacking it with Grim Transcendence in the Hanged Man phase. Also a funny thing that WOULD happen is that in the original Nyx Avatar WILL spam Night Queen when its HP is very low, and Night Queen inflicts random status aliments to the party one of which being *charm.* And it's entirely possible for a party member to HEAL Nyx back to full. However, it's not AS big of a deal here because we got controllable party members AND Theurgys being a busted mechanic overall.

    • @NessBrawl64

      I remember that back when I beat P3, I knew about this and made a point to grind out Narcissus for its Heart Item, just because that one was an accessory that made you immune to Charm.
      As for the fight being easier, I don't think controllable party members are that big of a factor. They were alright if you handled the Tactics menu well, and just about the only thing that could be problematic was, like, a heal not going to the person you wanted sometimes. I agree they nerfed this boss too much and they shouldn't, but I'd blame this more on power creep we got from games since P3, Theurgy is just one of the main things this time.
      Nyx apparently used to have a hidden resistance to all elements outside Almighty in her Death phase. That doesn't seem to be the case here, they could just have done actual resistances for her instead, maybe even beyond that.
      Imagine if this was the one enemy in the game that on top of resisting every element, _resisted Almighty and Theurgies_ too (they'd still be viable but not a win button outside Armageddon)

    So besides him being sick, the Great Seal using up all his HP, is what's said to you at the beginning where you only have one year. Pharos also tells you when you sign the contract that death comes for everyone. The part of the contract you take responsibility for is being a carrier of death. The clock and the elevator stopping was also another symbol. And if you read the lyrics that's played in the last battle with Nyx's core, it shows that he knew he was going to die. The other new thing in Reload is if you look at the opening, how you get the Velvet Room key from Elizabeth is that she transforms a red spider lily into the Velvet Room key. The red spider lily symbolizes both great misfortune and death. So him signing basically a deal with death is how he got his powers in the first place.
    The game is a pretty good allegory for The Fool's Journey which what makes the tarot theme in Persona 3 really cool.

    And when I thought nothing could be better than Persona 5. On a serious note, though, currently crying my eyes out at this beautiful, yet tragic ending, when I'm so used to the feel-good endings from Persona 4 and 5. I loved watching this game so much and don't know how anything could beat it. VL

    If you want to know what really happened to the MC, play The Answer DLC on September. There are hints here and there about what happened throughout the ending here in The Journey, but The Answer will definitely provide what you looking for.

    i love this remake. I have some nitpicks but I always felt P3 was the best persona game, I just struggled to rank it over 4 and 5 due to the outdated mechanics.
    now that you both played 3 and 4 I hope you both consider Arena again. ultimax, if I recall, includes the main story from 1st arena game.
    Also,
    The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed.

    Normally, I would’ve done this with individual arcana throughout the LP, when a Social Link/Confidant got maxed out. This time, it’s all at once (I know it’s not *all* of them, but it’s close enough).
    The Arcana is welcome in the -Dark Hour- universe.

    I’m so glad you guys enjoyed this game and after you play Episode Aigis (I hope you will), check out P4 Arena! At least just to see the P3 cast timeskip

The movies mostly explore the main game, and they aren't going to watch it, after all.

    I agree to some extent, mostly with Persona 5’s cast, that they felt very segmented and it was very off putting especially considering how some of the roles were replaced simply just by another character showing up…like Makoto and Futaba basically showing up and just taking the role of spoken leader/strategists, and support from Morgana and the other Phantom Thieves just kind of existing. However, I kind of forgive some of the “distance” because of the fact they live in Tokyo and it’s harder to catch up in the big dense city, but where I disagree is that the investigation team seems segmented, because after they defeat their shadow and become part of the team they don’t instantly become all of sudden pushed to the side. In fact, they often accept that part of them, but still have issues that are solved throughout the story as it doesn’t instantly make them the perfect being just by accepting their flaws, and a lot of that is shown just by their group dynamic and close friendship throughout the entire story. I think the biggest issue that holds the other teams back that you both explained is that in Persona 3 the evolutions of Persona happen naturally within the story, whereas in Persona 4 and 5 it happens as a direct circumstance of now you’re facing the final boss which hits differently emotionally because it’s a direct response to a shonen trope of needing to power up at this time to win, instead of natural growth because you lost something precious. It’s like Goku powering up because he has to win versus Gohan powering up because he just saw Android 16 die in front of him and not being able to stop it…

    Yeah your boi died. Rip Pixel-dono, you will be missed 🫡🙏
    My read on the whole ending sequence was that the reason why you got to go back for a short while after sealing Nyx away was directly tied to the gang loosing their memories. So everyone gradually regaining their memories on graduation day was actually a double-edged sword. Once Junpei, Yukari, and Aigis began questioning the gaps in their memory the week before graduation, that was when you started to feel weak. And it's also why they don't make it to greet you on the rooftop.
    So it's like, the trade-off for ensuring that your friends still remember the growth they went through in SEES, is to peacefully pass on with the knowledge that you're leaving them with the strength to move on without you.

    Oh, I should warn you: Just in case you guys were considering it, DON'T play Persona 4 Arena yet. It actually contains spoilers for Persona 3: The Answer, which is coming out as Persona 3: Episode Aigis in September. (In Persona 3 FES in Japan, the main game was called "Episode Yourself" while the added story content was called "Episode Aigis". This was changed in the western release of FES to "The Journey" and "The Answer", respectively.)
    And, when you do get around to it, DON'T watch the opening. It contains spoilers for the game. It's much more blatant than your typical mainline Persona game opening.
