The snow was used beautifully to convey their respective styles and personality. Gong Er uses Baguazhang. She was a woman with resolve and determination, giving up her chances at romance for the rest of her life in pursuit of vengeance. Her character has a good symbolism of Yin and the gentleness (柔) in this scene. Much of her techniques involved redirection, usage of palm techniques, and circular maneuvers. Whenever she moves, her feet never kicked up any snow, showing how both her style and her personality is one of reservation and control. Ma San uses Xing Yi. He is a man who was prideful and avaricious, having taken on multiple opponents at once previously, and betraying his country for riches. His character is set up as the Yang and the hardness (刚). His techniques feature linear strikes and wide swings with his fists. His movement always kicked up a lot of snow, and this shows his impulsiveness and lack of control of himsmelf and his power. There is one exception, at the scene where they simultaneously struck each other. Gong Er's fall kicked up a lot of snow while Ma San barely disturbed the snow. The idea is that in the moment, their movement carried the opponent's force and hence the opponent's characteristic. I feel that it served well both as a metaphor for balance (there is yang in yin, and yin in yang), and possibly as a representation of their personality as well. Ma San must have had taken time and resolve to make the decision to side with the Japanese and stick to his decision even when confronted by his master, and it's hard to argue that Gong Er was not at all impulsive in deciding on revenge.
What is the story again behind the final move she makes with her hands onto his face...this is what her father had taught her, correct? On another note, I really loved the Chinese/Cantonese (?) language they spoke in this film, especially Max Zhang's character...there was such a distinct sound to it, a harsh yet deep and beautiful tone. Thank You!
@@junemoonchild69 Ma San was expelled by his master (aka Gong Er's father) earlier in the story when the master found out Ma San is working with the Japanese. In that fight, even though Ma San had no qualms inflicting lethal damage against his master, the master couldn't bear to do the same to Ma San, and instead used the same palms to the face technique to simply throw him out the house. The master also requested in his dying breath for Gong Er to not seek revenge but instead just to live her own life and be happy, and we know how well that went. I personally see this as a contrast between Gong Er and his father. One is more experienced with how things are in the world, has grown to be more merciful and humble, and less led by his emotion, and the other is more impulsive, hot-headed and prideful. They both use the same technique to end a fight, and on the same person to boot, but with very different intentions and achieving very different results. That said, each ends in its own tragedy: the father had suffered grave injury because of his hesitancy, while the daughter sought revenge at the cost of giving up her marriage and happiness.

Trivia: - The fighting style the woman (Gong Er, played by Zhang Ziyi) uses ("64 hands") is derived from Baguazhang ("8 trigrams palm"), part of the inspiration for a Hyuuga fighting style (also called "8 trigrams 64 palms" in its name) in the anime Naruto ;) It contains a lot of deft turns and hand changes, allowing the wielder to fully utilise all angles of attack/defense. (In Naruto, this is brought up to superpower levels.) - If I'm not wrong, the guy (Ma San, played by Max Zhang) uses a style derived from Xingyiquan ("shape & intent fist"), a style with military origins that emphasizes using full-body coordination to generate bursts of power, turning the wielder into a humanoid weapon. Usually, Baguazhang and Xingyi is practiced together as one school, as they complement each other very well. This is also reflected in the movie, as Gong Er's father (Gong Yutian) is also Ma San's master. Each of them inherited an aspect of their school's skill. The reason for this fight is that Ma San killed Master Gong (after the latter called him out for colluding with the Japanese, who were invading China), and now Gong Er comes to avenge her father.

Gong Er's last move was called "The Old Ape Hangs His Signet And Turns Around". Gong Baosen (Gong Er's father, Ma San's teacher) once asked Ma San what the essence of this move was. Ma San wasn't able to (or was not bothered to) give an answer. Gong Baosen told him the essence wasn't hanging the signet, but turning around, urging Ma San to stop colluding with the Japanese, turn around while he still can. Ma San did not like that, and they started a fight. Ma San was pushed out of the house by Gong Baosen with this move, but he was able to hurt Gong Baosen severely with his knee, which led to Gong Baosen's death. To avenge her father, Gong Er took a vow to never marry, never take any student. Then they fought at the train station in Shenyang, as the video shows us. She turned around when Ma San least expected it, then pushed him towards the train. She did not kill Ma San, but she proved that Ma San wasn't the rightful heir to Gong Baosen and their faction, casting him out as a traitor. In this way, her father was finally avenged.
I think this was definitely a fair fight, both had an equal right to their position, she just happened to win by chance, and this was just what one did then...along with family+personal pride.
Gong Baosen did not use the turning back technique to fight Ma San, resulting in his own death. Ma San finally said: I thought the master was slow, I was wrong. Gong Baosen wanted to use his death to make Ma San turn back
She won the fight but her injuries from this fight ultimately contributed to her own end. As I recall, she relied heavily on opium or some pain killer to treat her injuries and died from that as a result

You have probably already discovered it by yourself but the two tracks come from « Les Rivières Pourpres ». Excellent french thriller starring Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel.
Disrespect is not a good thing show towards opponents. Street fights can be so unpredictable so not properly assessing your opponent could make you the victor or could get you pine boxed in the end.
As I did not know they were sibs (I didn't see the movie) that does shed a bit of light on my perspective. If that's the case, then this indeed wouldn't be a run-of-the-mill street beef. @@carrotcake7071 lets assume that she was 25 when she first came to the south and met Ip Man in 1936(which actually would be uncommonly old considering she is betrothed but isn't yet married, Chinese tend to marry young as per our customs of that time), she died in 1953 which meant that she was only 42 years old. which is still her prime years. A master class in cinematography. Every frame of this film is a work of art. That said, I would have loved a little less slow motion and a little less tight shots. This was a build up of 1 1/2 hours (spanning over 2 years instory) of her making her way though the desert with her people, towards going north to eventually reclaim the her family's entitlement after this fight. Such a strong build up. Great movie!
I understand Ziyi Zhang’s training. Her dance studies gave her a great advantage with her marshal arts training. I understand this because I myself studied dance for 11 years before I started training in marshal arts. Ziyi has a strong technique. I hope she continues to engage training as it keeps the mind and body at peace.

Amazing movie, she sacrificed a lot to become an elite fighter and it’s why her father did not want to teach her and wanted her to become a doctor and enjoy having a family and a fulfilling life. In the end she died in pain, and alone but she brought honor to her fathers name. She obviously understood the secret to the move that he couldn’t figure out, it was only when she hit him that he understood it and submitted to her allowing her fathers reputation to be restored.

Honestly, she had the advantage here. Small, light, her martial art stresses speed, motion, and leverage. He's heavier, uses a martial art that relies on power which means he's losing a solid chunk of hitting strength being that they're fighting in snow and he can't get full traction.

Earlier in the movie, Gong Er's (the woman) grandfather was disowning Ma San (the guy) as a pupil because of his defection to the Japanese in the wake of the WWII occupation of northern China. When he did so, he asked if he ever taught Ma San his signature move "Old man hangs up badge". Ma San said "nope" and got a live demo where he got flung out of the meeting room. That move, was the same move as Gong Er used to finish Ma San this time around and flung him onto a moving train. The point here being, that Ma San in his arrogance, never really understood what the old grandmaster was trying to pass down to him, and Gong Er did, so she "allowed" the old man to hang up his badge and pass on his station to the next generation, to her. That's also why after this fight, she tells him to return all the family items, because this demo left no doubt she's head of the clan now.

It is a very pleasant thing for me to see that zhang ziyi is still around! Brings a smile to my heart.
If anybody wants to know, the name of the song is Bruno Coulais - L'hélicoptère. I found this song 100% randomly. Recently got a free Google home. when i plugged it n and linked my google account I asked it to play some music. This was the FIRST song it played hahahaha. Instantly brought me back to this fight scene. Crazy how I couldn't actually find other versions of the song besides what I posted here.
Silas Grissom you’re a legend! I was looking for it forever
You have probably already discovered it by yourself but the two tracks come from « Les Rivières Pourpres ». Excellent french thriller starring Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel.
It’s from the Les Rivieres Pourpres soundtrack originally
favorite martial arts fight scene ever, gotta hand it to Wong Kar-Wai to direct a masterpiece
The disrespect in her look as she blocks and pushes him away at 1:03 without even giving him a look is so good.
Like get ya bars up boi. Lol
Disrespect is not a good thing show towards opponents. Street fights can be so unpredictable so not properly assessing your opponent could make you the victor or could get you pine boxed in the end.
@@woodie62
As siblings, they are beyond assessment. It's not just a street fight at this point.
As I did not know they were sibs (I didn't see the movie) that does shed a bit of light on my perspective. If that's the case, then this indeed wouldn't be a run-of-the-mill street beef. However, I still stand by the principle of my comment even with this being more than just a "regular" street fight.
@@woodie62 They are not siblings. He learned kungfu from her father but he betrayed the master. This scene is her revenge so yes it's not just a street fight.
I never realized how much of a fan I am of Ziyi Zhang. She is Perfectly Amazing. Wow!
Saddest thing is that this one fight killed them both, him almost immediately while she succumbed to her injuries later and I think they both knew it even before the fight began.
😔
Xnothen but she died due to her addiction to oppium
@@carrotcake7071 opium addiction generally does not kill one at the prime of their life ( which she was) unless it's through overdose( hard to believe when she's a practicing doctor).
Xnothen after the fight with Ma San she was injured so badly that resulted in her becoming an addict to cope with the pain, ultimately dying. And i believe she wasn’t young at that point.
I speak mandarin and the way they phrase her condition signifies that it is an injury that is still ongoing and has never fully healed.
She finally showed she was the true Grand Master and her father’s daughter by exposing the final move. One of the dopest fight scenes ever.
- How many slow mo you want ?
Director: - Yes
it's wong kar wai, he can't do movie without slow mo
Нурсултан Талгатулы: it was so distracting to my taste 🙊, and the colours of the backgroud did no justice to the visual motion
THE WHOLE MOVIS IS BASICALLY SLOW MO,
How many times do we switch shots/angles?
Masterful indeed. Probably one of the best martial 'arts' scenes ever. Cracking stuff
I want to credit all the styles, moves, trainings, and structures to just 1 man that deserves, Yuen Woo Ping. He made ya'l believe it's real and at the same time totally disappear in the comment section...until now. What a master!
please tell me she got an oscar . i mean ... with the incredible films she has done . she NEEDS to be recognized
From what I recall, yes, this movie received almost all the biggest awards in China...for actress, actor, film, director, etc. etc.
A master class in cinematography. Every frame of this film is a work of art. That said, I would have loved a little less slow motion and a little less tight shots. There is one scene towards the end where Gong Er is practicing Bagua and you catch a brief long shot of her at full speed in the snow and it's glorious.
Wow ..everything .. background music superb..
Xang Ziyi is amazing as usual..I liked all the movies about Ipman ..but I really enjoyed this one because of her..the fight scenes are amazing
Which 1 this movie
Pinky Chauhan the grandmaster
Some people actually complaint this movie is about her instead of Ip, especially the Asia cut. The North America cut is less obvious :P
ipman zero
the legend is born 2010.u must watch
I loved this movie the most. Just so cinematically artistic. Don't even get me started on the epic sound design and beautiful poetic dialogue!
So beautifully filmed! The cinematography is incredible!
They don’t make films like this no more this is a classic
Who would have guessed that Wong Kar Wai, the king of slow cinema would have ended up shooting some of the best fight scenes ever shot?
He's already done a Wuxia before. The film is called "Ashes of Time Redux" and it us up there with "The Grandmaster" as far as the most beautifully shot and choreographed fight scenes go.
I LOVE the way the snow was scattering because of the way Ma San(The man) launches his attacks with full power, agility, explosiveness & concentration. IT WAS VERY BEAUTIFUL❤❤
#ClassicMovie💯
If you were privileged enough to watch the 4 1/2 hour version. This was a build up of 1 1/2 hours (spanning over 2 years instory) of her making her way though the desert with her people, towards going north to eventually reclaim the her family's entitlement after this fight. Such a strong build up. Great movie!
1:59 the look mom gives me if I don't take out the trash lmao 😂😂
LOLOLOL!
I love this scene I lost count how many times I watched it
If looks could kill he would've be dead before the fight
Previn Lubom 🤣 true she is beautiful !
Omg Yes, and the one after was a finishing move for sure!
@@damianstarks3338 true XD
I understand Ziyi Zhang’s training. Her dance studies gave her a great advantage with her marshal arts training. I understand this because I myself studied dance for 11 years before I started training in marshal arts. Ziyi has a strong technique. I hope she continues to engage training as it keeps the mind and body at peace.
The cinematography is so beautiful.
so this is ziyi zhang 15 years after hero!
She just doesn't age and her beauty is constantly mesmerizing
This is by far the best fight of the film, in my opinion. She completely dominates him and destroys his view of the strength of women.
What beautiful technique and martial art. The cinematography and fight Choreography was done really really well and its a shame more martial arts movies arent more like this!
This movie is perfection, martial Arts at its B-E-S-T!!!. Great story, AWESOME action, driven and sympathetic characters, a pure joy to watch. kept me moving (like I could dodge any of these punches) 🙄😁👍👍👍👍 If you miss it your loss, to bad.
Say what you want ,this is one of the best fight scenes EVER!!!!
Beauty personified through motion with effortless grace...
One of the amazing actresses who can do fight scenes without a body double..😍😎🍿
@WhiteTP0ison every expression gives a different vibe 😊
Stunning cinematography...
This scene was absolutely beautiful.
Came for the cinematography, stayed for the badassery.
I would definitely put this on my top 10 best fight martial art films.
Oh i super loved this fight scene and the sound effects wow...
1:17 really appreciate the stances. So grounded and focused...
Oh how I love this movie! ‘The Iron Butterfly’ + the sexiest man alive (no, not this one!) in the film that Keanu Reeves called ‘the real deal’!
🙏🏻🌹🙏🏽
This is my favorite scene of the movie. Great chemistry and tension between them.
Great fight..ZiYi Zhang is so beautiful😍😍♍♍
My warmest Respect to this great martial arts teacher
One of the best fight scene ever !
this took my breath away!
my God what a fight!?! 😭Woo Ping, Wang thanks so much!!!🙏😫
🌸 I think Zhang Ziyi is very talented her movies have always been breathtaking to watch 💕💗💖✨
Hero, Crouching tiger hidden dragon, House of flying daggers, Memoirs of a Geisha, (she was also in Rush Hour 2). Her film list goes on but I’ve only seen the above.
Yes agreed., all great movies with her in it.!!... Rush Hour 2 had to have been one of her 1st western audience watched movies to showcase her acting and martial arts. The other films catapulted her fame to this day. 👍😎
A.D. 公元 2021尾-2022頭,邊個向媒體(最近)公開宣楊聲稱話: 餓死、病...,(某名人定專家或是專員)有乜意思,所指為誰?唔該講緊邊個,借問(一聲),係咪指某位/人之(千金)!
the music, choreography, and cinematography really gives me The Matrix vibes
Who ever shot this scene, it was AWESOME! Good job!
The cinematographer is Phillipe De Sourd. He's amazing 😍
Zhang Ziyi is a great and very beautiful actress. She is so enchanting in the Rebel Princess.
Run D.M.C. at 0:11 are my favorite)))
I thought the same!
You can call her "BaguaZhang Ziyi"! lol 🤣😂😅😄
Finishing move: Polar Express!
I love this! One of my favorite wong kar wai movies. This movie i can understand a bit. The fight scenes are good, the visuals are nice and the characters are understandable in my level compared to other wong kar wai films.
Love you Zhang ziyi powerful action.
Aside from Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi is also a favorite of mine who plays a martial artist actress. I love her in the martial art movies : Crouching Tiger , sleeping Lion…, Hero, Grandmaster and my favorite of all, “House of flying daggers”. She’s such a talented actresss.
One of the all time best fight scenes ever
So many beautiful sequences in this film. Also that one of them running toward each other.
Timeless beauty and great skill
The best siblings quarrel ever 🙌🏾 The oldest and wisest always will win 🏆 💙 ❤️!
Seriously, I need the OST for this entire scene.
Stylish, one of the most artistic fighting scene!
Gosh dang it... I'm on the train that just leads me to all videos that has Zhang Ziyi in it... when I first heard the announcement for the live action Movie Mulan... I thought of Zhang Ziyi... to me, she would've been the best fit for the role. If only they made the movie years ago... though she's 41yrs old now, she's still beautiful and doesn't look her age.
Never tired to watch this over and over again!
Honestly, she had the advantage here. Small, light, her martial art stresses speed, motion, and leverage. He's heavier, uses a martial art that relies on power which means he's losing a solid chunk of hitting strength being that they're fighting in snow and he can't get full traction.
they had the same master. same technique
@@jandee3384 no. Ariel is right.
Yes, they had the same master, that knew 2 fighting styles, and passed each of them to him and her.
The style he uses is Xing Yi Quan, and she uses Ba Gua Zhang.
@@viniciuspaiva3889 Well, he didn't really 'get it' as well as she did. He didn't understand that you had to come under your opponent for that last move. She did. He went for that same kill move that killed their master (her father) but she saw it coming and finished it. She never lost a fight.
Beautifully filmed.....direction and editing are superb.
Her face speaks devine justice
This movie is visually gorgeous
Love this GRANDMASTER movie 🎥 this movie 🎥 was 🔥🔥🔥
People say "that train is way too long for this fight" apparently seem to conveniently forget the never-ending runway from Fast & Furious 6...
A fight shown in moments, and beautiful, too.
2:01 That look you get when you've been told more than once. 😁
I love this girls face. Something about it❤
3:43 the look you give when you want the world to know your not to be trifled with
He needs his own show. His martial arts form is better than ANYONE currently put including all the big names like.
Zhang Ziyi is perfect example of beauty and talent. She should be in next MCU movie.
