I was stationed there as security police in 84-85. They started off with just two ordinary fences around the missile area. The fence had movement detectors on them. And in between the two fences were motion detectors. The fence itself was nothing special, and could be cut easily and quickly by protesters. So they later installed the "super fence". It was designed so the cutters could not easily get the cutting edges in between the links. I also think is was galvanized steal. (I could be wrong). No fence was 100%, but this super fence would slow down people enough for our security forces to get to them before the crossed the piled up razor wire and second fence. I spend many hours patrolling the inside of that area, along with the weapons storage area. Long boring nights. I also worked at the "Entry Control Point" at the entrance, where people and vehicles were searched before entry. Once Christmas Eve, we had a Sgt try to perform a nice deed by dressing up as Santa Clause, and saying Hi to the troops on duty. He worked there and had a badge. Unfortunately, he did not announced his intentions ahead of time, and was detained at the gate for having a disguise. Fun times. Sad to see the largest runway in Europe get taken out. But time marches on.
I been waiting for part 2 and not been disappointed another well informed piece of history, I like all cold War era can't wait till part 3. Keep up the good work.
Rebar rust or it could be in the winter you could get white snow cones on meny times you could find orange snow cones but only when the snow on the ground wonce it melts you get orange water and sometimes chocolate logs come though the open drains..yummiest nukeie chocs ! Chocolate orenge ...
Great stuff, shame you didn't get inside the bunkers, though there isn't much left, the size of the bunkers inside is something to behold. The fence is always being fixed, but it takes them a week or two to patch up when an obvious hole is found, I'm sure there are one or two I've used that have been there for years and never been repaired.
Ancient Monument, lol! It almost looks like it's 'on ice' for one reason or another. The fencing is still maintained, I wonder why? Anyway, thanks guys, great job!
@@AtheistOrphan Ahh, ok, we have a lot of that going on locally as well at Hankley common & Bourne woods usually Speilberg productions. Heavy security, casts of thousands literally. Gladiator a few years ago they were here for months! Wrecked the place.
Was there 90-91 That area was known as the gama . and the number of sensors that use to be in ground and fence as well. 501ST /SPS / GLCM. The queen did fly in there in the late 90s.
Got in them a year or so ago and it was pretty good, everything is just used as storage now though and there's more regular patrols these days so wouldn't try it again
I spent a few weeks on a temporary duty assignment there as an Air Force firefighting specialist in the late 70's. The OSA prevents me from saying much other than your surmising about various functions of buildings is fairly accurate. The first building you entered in part one was a 'ground water' monitoring facility. Power distribution was a major need of the place,,, thus the scads of smaller structures with concrete pedestals that contained transformers including the fire 'burn' training building with all the soot on the ceilings. The concrete ring around the steel C-130 mock up was primarily meant to contain any contaminated water or fuel and secondly to mark the limits of observers approach. I'm not really sure if the control tower is still standing or what condition it is in,,, great views from the glass walled work spaces though. It's amazing to see the differences between then and now.
Just seen tonight on ITV 3 an old episode of Lewis ......... included in the police drama were lots of Greenham Common with views inside the bunkers etc ps the whole site was deserted so how come you can`t get in ?
During the cold war you would have been shot on site when you entered the inner zone near the cruise missile storage without clearance. Usually the outer zones were guarded by the host country , the inner always by the Americans.
The strange water comes out from what's known as draytons gully! I'm not sure but I think it's drainage from the gamma site! I found a lot of strange structures on the other side of the base near the control tower! I only live 5 minutes from the base and have a fair bit of info on the site so if there's anything I might be able to help you with just ask!
A few years ago I parked at the west end of the demolished runway and had a walk around, nothing interesting was accessible :( They seemed to be in the process of digging up the underground jet fuel pipes, several usa type fire hydrants though :) The underground stuff is off limits for bats and the outer section of the airfield is marked off for nesting birds. It is sad to see a runway demolished, they could have just demolished part of it and opened the rest for a gliding club, model flying, or light aircraft :( As a nature reserve they have done a piss poor job with gorse bushes as the only Flora :(
"contaminated with uranium" LOL.... Fyi, nuclear warheads don't generally leak (unless they're made in Russia 🤣). Btw, I was stationed there in 89. Looks like the gamma is all that's left of it . Cool video though!
And more resentley fast and furious was filmed there as well . I work near the bunkers and the big hanger you see near the bunkers for adsea and the other car you see are from Eden Vauxhall they store there cars there
maybe its still active that's why the don't want anyone in there and all them jets flying over because of how close to the fences that yous got you probable set of some sort of hidden alarm and the jets where flying over to see what you where doing so close to the still active base
The scheduled monument warning sign is absolutely guff. Sure, it's an offence to damage a scheduled monument, but the duty to enforce is down to Historic England and the CPS, not the owner of the site. The sign is just trying to sound all official to put you off.
Hmm, 96 mobile launchers heading out on the 4 minute warning, I see a problem there LOL. More interestingly a teacher from school used to work in a bunker that had 40 feet of concrete on top, that depth was required to cut the radiation from a strike down to just a lethal dose :(
liking your style bro, first vid i watched of yours, hearing @hellonearth saying IKS all the time on vids, LIKED, SUBSCRIBED AND HIT THE BELL, u been Suffolk at all bro?
1:28 This Safety Warning is Pussy. At our 5 German Combat Alert Sites for the P1/P2 you had to read "Restricted Area.......USE OF DEADLY FORCE AUTHORIZED"...
I was there guarding the GAMA back in 1986. I have happy memories of the place, trying to stop CND from cutting big holes in our fence lol. The razor wire was stacked 3 rolls high, to keep them out. I think there were about 5 fences to keep people out, including the outer perimeter fence. The protestors knew that they could get in the outer fence, but knew that anyone trying to get in the second fence would be shot by the live armed guards.
I used to deliver to cruise missile bunkers so to me they are just things I know about and quite ordinary things. I dont miss the women spitting at my truck when I was just trying to do my job.
@John Henderson i get that but I dont understand why these people seemed to think not having them would stop people who did have them using them. Not haveing chemical weapons has not prevented people using them.
I had never heard of the missile connection with Greenham Common. 😉 I had always understood that it was the UK's emergency strategic store of lesbians in case of war! Another word for them and used in certain circles was "useful fools".

I worked the GAMA in ‘84 & ‘85 it’s sad to see it now. Great memories and a wonderful base can’t believe they tore up the flight-line.

Cant believe you didn’t mention the recent Star Wars filming, lots of pics of the millennium Falcon in those bunkers. Great film though, thanks.
Well done David Edwards an interesting part of the site history is it was used as a location for the Star Wars, the force awakens,
Wow I never knew about this place ! Thank you for the adventure and history and video was awesome !

Great video again IKS :) very interesting place
I doubt very much there was any machining of nuclear materials that would cause sump waste here. Great job as always, guys!
Great video 😃👍✌

Color does look like what ya see near the uranium mines in south Texas

Interesting video. Too bad you can't get a pass to get in and film.
Was looking out for DCI Hunt...(ashes to ashes)

Nice video Ian. Done plenty on there. Unfortunately, the OSA does not allow me to fill in some information for you.
“ the camp had visitors from even Europe “. They actually came from all over the world !

These are in fact shelters in the GAMA site rather than "bunkers"; nothing is really underground.
