Ok so my word application on my Mac froze and I had not saved it nor autosaved it, I just saw the dreaded spinning circle. I force quit word and then it asked me if I wanted to save a document I was working on once it was back on and I was able to recover it. I’m guessing if its a problem with the app freezing or crashing, it will just save it for you. Hope that helps.
