Join me in watching a Milonga: where people dance tango on the squares of Buenos Aires. So many different ages, shapes and outfits together on a tiny patch of uneven stones. And yet all of them seem so happy, so relaxed and at the same time so intensely connected to the dance and the music.

I always imagined tango as a fierce and angry dance. Perhaps I associated it with fado or flamenco... Perhaps it was influenced by all the posters and postcards of sturdy looking women with tightly tight hair and straight faces doing splits in crimson dresses...

In San Telmo I was surprised to find that, while the tango is certainly an intense affair, the primary emotions are romance and passion, not anger and pain. Even the music was much more joyful than I expected.

I could have sat there forever, soaking up the atmosphere of that warm summer night, looking at the expressions; the devotion on the women's faces. Even while they were often dancing with strangers (people seemed to switch partners often) the way they seemed to float between serene joy and intense passion is magical. They all managed to embody - in their own way - the essence of love.
