"Killing his own sons" - That really doesn't seem to be something Degwin could ever do. Even when he knows how frightening Gihren and Kycilia is, he refuses to stop them. He loves his children.
I always assumed Sasero was killed by Kycilia. She offs people the way we eat popcorn and he had just physically harmed her not long before, treating her like absolute garbage. We know she's a sibling killer to begin with from the actual show. Just seems like she had to be the one to do it.

The best parts of Origin, from someone who saw UC0079 first:
    - Seeing how Ramba Ral and Crowley Hamon's team came together. This is the one team you see in the original series that are so loyal to not just homeland, but to each other. And it makes them intriguing.
    - Seeing more of Dozle Zabi. Dozle and Garma are the only two Zabis that seem to be genuinely likable people. Giving him that case of survivor's guilt was brilliant.
    - Paying attention to source material rather than retconning. A few things are retconned, but in very minor passable ways that service the story better. But I can't think of any character in Origin that does something blatantly out of character for their time in 0079.

    • @mudawott
      @mudawott Год назад +4

Dozle also goes out in a way that is semi honorable as well. Hes protecting his men and his kids so giving him a survivors guilt storyline, explains his most memorable decisiom

    • @CoracaoAcidental98
      @CoracaoAcidental98 Год назад +5

Few things are retconned? Bro, the personality of a bunch of characthers is retconned, Amuro was a spoiled kid in the original that confronted everyone as if he was always right, in Origin he is a moron disconnected from his reality because he is looking at his dad computer, Kai in MSG is a coward that hides his fears in sarcasm and "I don't care", in Origin he is a deliquent that steals a construction machine to invade a military base (?), Garma in the ending of Origin has zero of the confidence he displays in MSG, in the academy I thought was good because was demonstrating how much he grow because Char's influence, but no apparently, he just is a coward. Also everyone, and I mean EVERYONE (except Char for obvious Gary Stu reasons), is a shouting lunatic in perfectly silent rooms in any situation, is irritating when the team of animators think that the only way to add tension to a conversation is making everyone shout constantly like buffoons.
Also retconning the mobile suits development of the federation for that early just misses the point of the original that they are losing a war because they didn't see potential in MS, in Origin they are just idiots that made a crappy MS that a tiny principality with limited resources could surpass easily.
I don't tink all the retcons are bad but is far from a good prequel to MSG, is a completely diferent take on the story, it doesn't add context, it changes the context.

What I also like with The Origin is how Zeon was shown to be nothing like what people tended to assume initially - a benevolent, philosophical visionary whom was unjustly assassinated and had his lofty vision co-opted by a fascist, extremist, family for their own gain.
Instead, Zeon is shown to be not that far off from the Zabi family. If anything, the Zabi family's actions are all but the next logical step to Zeon's own extremism; going from simply spouting speech and ideas to military action in order to carry out those ideas.

I'm with you Mahbu. Degwin gives the image and impression of an ugly bastard and evil schemer. BUT, only the impression though, because every single dialogue spoken by that character after his friend Zeon's death, is of a caring person to his family and subordinates. I even believe he was telling the truth to Admiral Revil, in that he wanted to end the war for real, without more bloodshed. The real Son of Bitch and most likely Zeon's murderer here, was Gihren. And Kycilia to a lesser degree.

Degwin would never harm his own children. Sasro's assassination was entirely on Kycillia after Sasro hit her because she is a spiteful monster. Degwin is just sly enough to use it to his own ends, but he's a family first kind of person. Complicit bastard, but blood is blood to him, to the point where he wouldn't even raise a hand against Gihren even after calling his son a wannabe Hitler.
Personal favourite Gundam series is a tie between War in the Pocket and the Thunderbolt: December Sky. Bandit Flower is decent but December Sky is tied with War in the Pocket as both of them come at the War Sucks theme from entirely different angles. War in the Pocket is about how good people and children are affected by war, choosing to do what is right even when it is hopeless. Thunderbolt is about how war is so all consuming that it can utterly destroy a person and leave them a broken shell.

Origin is, while not completely canon to the main timeline, provides a lot of context and ideas that can be considered helpful (and canon) to the main timeline. Events such as the civil unrest in Zum City after Daikum's death, development of Mobile Suits, the area somewhere in South America called Jaburo, Revil getting captured by the Black 3 Stars and then escaping to make his speech, Ramba Ral's and Hamon Crowley's relationship, and most importantly Char's journey to become an Ace pilot that will eventually go to Side 7 to destroy the Gundam. Not to mention that Amuro's attitude by the start of the original series is briefly explained in Origin, him being mostly by himself while his father is always away at work and eventually discovering what his father is working with right before the attack on Side 7 happened. Take note that the Origin OVA fits within the Origin manga, a re-telling of the original series. It's different from the original series/movie trilogy, but the overall ideas are the same (improved even in most cases).

This show got me hooked into Gundam, and to think prior to this show, I really had no idea where to start, after watching this I started watching the original 1979 anime and I gotta say, Gundam is AMAZING! Its branding makes you think it's all about mechas battling it out, but to the core of the show is really about the politics of war and the relationship among its main characters during times of war. The plot is handled with great care and is very sophisticated that it is really are catered to a mature audience. Gundam is definitely not for kids, but it wouldn't hurt for kids to give the show a try. Now I know why Gundam is a legend that deserves its place among the Mt Rushmore of Anime.

@CommandoDude I'd say S1 was mediocre and S2 was better but not amazing looking at it from a story and character point of view. It's fun to watch but the plot and characters fall pretty flat. Also the info dumping in S1 that occurred pretty much every other episode and character motivations that seemed good until the next episode when they went back on things was kind of annoying, but Mari Okada did pen the show and sadly her works tend to have this issue specifically of being a little inconsistent and just an info dump show because apparently no one's smart enough to pay attention.

      @@BaronVonFisticuffs
      Ok so I'm home.
The Universal century can be divided into 3 sections.
The first is the main conflict which sets in motion all of the others: The One Year War Era.
This period consists of multiple anime taking place within the same year as eachother.
Spoilers, the good guys win in every anime.
that's not much of a spoiler but y'know just sayin.
Our story begins in Gundam the origin, which tells of the lead up to and the first few battles of the One Year War. Despite its name the Titular Gundam only appears as design plans. It's an amazing experience and is among the best things sunrise ever produced.
Gundam the origin fills in all the blanks and sets you up for the main series perfectly.
From here on in you are free to watch the following anime in any order you want. they all start within months of eachother and end around the same time. I will list them by start date relative to the original show.
The next series in the time line is the OVAs of Gundam Igloo, which tells the story of a group of engineers fighting for zeon with one off wonderweapons.
Igloo has weird cgi faces, and starts 6 months before the original anime and its first episode takes place at the tail end of Origins. It's a great watch for the action and story, and shows the stress Zeon faces to keep its weapons up to par.
Gundam Igloo goes on to the end of the OYW, and has a second series that shows the federation fighting desperately to keep zeon in line. It's actually my favorite series, and you can probably find it on RUclips. the blue ray costs 100 bucks, but there is always piracy if you cant find it. it was never dubbed but subs exist.
Next on our list, after 6 movies and a spinoff OVA, is the one and only Mobile Suit Gundam 1979.
      You can watch the movies.
they are shorter and a bit more touched up.
I didn't. Gundam 1979 with its 43 episodes has charm and character beyond watch time. frames get reused occasionally, but the world it sets up is massive and beautiful.
there is so much hope and brutality. It's really good. the animation is dated, but the fight choreography is amazing. everyone is moving and fighting. Every character grows and has their motivations.
      timeless classic.
Next up is Mobile Suit Gundam: the 08th MS team. starting about 10 episodes into 1979, this 13 ep series tells the tale of pilots serving in eastAsia, equipped with the potent gundam groundtypes, a suit between the gundam and the mass produced GM.
its charming, campy, and is basically gundam M.A.S.H.
also the animation is God tier 90s awesomeness.
Next up on our list is gundam 080.
This anime takes place just as the war comes to an end, and puts the war is hell knob all the way to ten. ridiculously brutal. its only available subbed though.

Origins is very good for the UC timeline as the UC timeline shows are decentralized and generally use the One Year War as a backdrop. Origins help set the stage which lets you explore the other series if you don't wanna watch the OG series. OVAs and miniseries like 8th MS team and War in the Pocket all become better once you learn the reason for the war. It also feeds into the message of war being bad, as the numerous character dramas and sacrifices are ultimately all caused by the tragedy of the death of Zeon, which Origins actually leaves ambiguous as to whether or not Degwin murdered him, if the official story that Earth Fed actually murdered him, or if he just suffered a badly timed heart attack and the Zabis only used it to further their own ends.

I only recently started getting into Gumdan through what I am told is the most untraditional Gundam anime of all time. In my personal opinion, those who are new should even consider Iron Blooded Orphans as a go to. With no real relevance to the overarching narrative of traditional Gundam, I still feel it upholds many of its iconic storytelling elements (minus the excessive game of thrones body count...) like its maturity in the subject matter of death, fights with absolute purpose, fighting choreography etc.
But of course, that's just personal preference.

The Origin is good but a lot of what makes it good will fly right over the heads of the uninitiated. At least watch and finish 0079 before checking it out, TV preferred but if you can't stomach it then the movies are an okay substitute with the third just straight up being really good and worth watching even after the TV series.
Also tonally The Origin is a little unorthodox compared to the rest of the major UC timeline so it might not give you a good idea of what the series is really like.

    • @thomasffrench3639

Not all of them. Actually, not most of them. There are timelines released online which can steer you in the right order. Though a LOT of OVA side stories stick around the time of the original series, so doing it all in order means you're watching a ton of One Year War material that doesn't actually progress the world at all.
The most essential ones to watch in my opinion are the First Gundam movie trilogy then Zeta Gundam, Double Zeta, and Char's Counterattack. After those, you have all the context you need any proceeding or preceding stories.

    • @DetectiveKen

      Origin

      Stardust Memory(optional)
      Zeta
      Char's Counterattack
      Unicorn
That's all the important*coughCharandAmuro* ones. Most OVAs are set during the war in the original series so they can be digested at literally any point and all other Tomino led UC stuff is complete garbage.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend someone use The Origin as a gateway into Gundam. It's based on the Origin manga and because of that has a bunch of retcons that don't line up with the actual UC timeline, you won't get as much out of seeing life before the One Year War without already being invested in UC and personally speaking, it's not that good. It felt like the equivalent of a someone yelling in my ear "Isn't Char the COOOOLEST?!" for 6 episodes.

While I am aware that many (most) Gundam watchers are not the biggest fan of Seed/Seed destiny those were the first Gundam shows I watched so I have a certain soft spot for them, but I certainly have seen more quality Gundam later like 00 and many others. I have serious problems with the first Gundam show though, I have started several times and only once I think I got to the third episode before I gave up. So I have never really gotten into the original timeline stuff, so I guess I have really just watched all the outliers.
I really wish they would make a live action movie though... Wait, let me rephrase that. I wish they would make a GOOD, or at least decent live action Gundam movie. The one that.... didn't get produced and only lives in dark nightmares didn't even have the guts to actually CALL it Gundam gundam it. Anyway, maybe I'll have a look at this thing. Maybe. ;-)

  • @Grarrgle
    @Grarrgle 5 лет назад +12

Early UC has become a bloated mess, yet they just keep stapling more to it while late UC goes to waste.
I'd also make the point that the original movie trilogy is a better start point, as you'll be more familiar with the feel of what continues into Zeta and CCA (nevermind ZZ for now).
The Origin was a fun revision of what we were used to, with lots of neat little tweaks that people had been saying "oh, it would make more sense like this" for years, but then the whole Char thing started and... yeah. As someone who bought all the manga volumes on release, there was a strong period of "what the fuck am I reading" after the halfway point. It had a distinct Episode 1 feel to me, giving silly explanations for things that didn't need explaining.
Which would a new viewer be better off watching? If they don't mind the age of the movies, I'd stand by them, as going into Zeta and beyond without having experienced the "Tomino touch" from the start may lead them into watching something they just don't like. Zeta and the rest of Tomino's works have a very distinctive style (ESPECIALLY dialogue) that some people just can't stomach.
If the age of the movies IS an issue... well, they'll be having more of that in Zeta.
