  • We all know that JDM cars and Japan's homegrown car culture are beloved across the world, but how about the USDM in JDM? Why are US cars so popular in Japan?
In Episode 5 of Driving Line's The Auto Otaku, Mike Garrett talks about Japan's long-time interest in American vehicles and American automotive style. There has been quite a long history of the American car culture in Japan, with quite a few sub-niches.
We go back to the post-war era to see how the auto industries of both America and Japan were intertwined and how images of Americana helped form the tastes for a generation of car lovers in Japan.
From there we dig into some of the best examples of American car culture in Japan, including the country's thriving lowrider scene and the jam-packed cruising sessions that happen on the streets of Tokyo. It's not as unusual as you might think to see a Japanese lowrider or Japanese hot rod.
Then we move on to the popularity of "USDM" and how Japanese-branded, American-built models like the Toyota Tundra Pickup have a cult following in Japan and how USDM maniacs closely follow the trends from across the Pacific.
We also dig into the history of Mooneyes, an iconic automotive brand that was founded in America and revitalized in Japan.
Finally we explore the world of "Dajiban" and how a group of Dodge Ram Van owners in Japan have become world famous for modifying, racing and even drifting their V8-powered American vans.
If you thought the best stuff coming out of Japan was all Skyline GT-Rs, wide body kits and time attack racing, you might want to think again. The US car culture is Japan is alive and well.

Loved this video. What I really wanna see is Japan's take on pickup trucks and muscle cars. Basically vehicles with big V8 engines.

100% correct! when i had a vintage car dealership back in the 80s lots of cars were sent to Japan while here in USA were importing many more (econo) cars lol There was a time when US dollar was worth less than Japan so japanese dealers were paying more for them which helped put me out of business, well Pres Bush Sr helped do that even more (turns out is WAS the economy stupid). Im guessing my 89 Turbo (factory) Turbo Dodge Caravan with wood grain would be hot there ;)

I have a 2001 dodge b1500, I’d love to get a line on the correct lowering suspension parts, I’m running a set of 90’s 17” aluminum wheels, all bushings were changed to poly graphite, flow master exhaust on a 5.2 ,, and new shocks. Soon a gen 3 hemi will be installed w/transmission, and a newer dodge truck rear axle with disc brakes and 3:91 gears

I would definitely like to see more videos about U.S. cars in Japan. Also, where did you get the black and white clip at the beginning of the video where it showed the father and son walking up to the 1950s Chevrolet?

Wait till parts are no longer available and discontinued, they will be shit out of luck. Parts are already scarce for old Chevy vans. At least we have access to salvage yards here.
