Just seeing this now, this video is insanely good. The amount of knowledge in here for bedroom producers/musicians is incredible... This type of content really shows how great the internet can be. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!
The ground you cover, your explanation of the process and your illustrations of the effects, plus the speed and level of language you use ... it's all so perfect. I can't wait to get home and apply this to my mix. Every video of yours that I've watched has been so useful - no filler, no bs, top tips, easy to follow. Thank you.
Literally you are revolutionizing how I am able to mix in Ableton. Most other ppl do all their mixing in ProTools or Logic and say to do the same in your own DAW, but it is not easy to follow along with Ableton and I record live instrumentation with Ableton so I was feeling discouraged; THANK YOU for going through this process in Ableton! I feel actually like I can do this stuff well now with your tutorial! Forever subscribed too; and especially since you mentioned Beck and Radiohead cause I am big on their music and how they record along with the style of music
Awesssssssoooommeeee. I love your explanation of why we shouldn’t just trust precanned tools for “snare compressor” and instead tune the mixing to the acoustic set. Love it. Thank you.
Very nice man, I've just started recording my drums using live 10 and since I've never used the program before, it was a real pain in my ass. Awesome tutorial 10/10
Dude, really cool and very helping - just one thing: Every time you do this before/after-thing, you immediately stop the playback at 'after'. Just a few seconds more would help spotting the difference since you're doing really fine tuning... But thanks anyways!
This vid will come in handy! Only problem, I’m starting from scratch. I’ve got a Scarlett 18i20 up, and running, and Abelton open. Any suggestions for vids for newbs? Using Abelton Intro
I thought i was the only one that doesnt like drum bus... everyone raves about it i feel like but I've never had a good time with it lol. I too prefer the modular approach.
Hey Anthony, great video, learning a lot! One thing you said about panning OHs- you said once reason to not do it is so you don't pan low energy (i.e. kick). What about this idea if you do want hard panned drums - you pan with a utility on each L/R channel of the OHs and with the same utilities use the bass mono function to mono the low end only. Would that give a good result and solve a part of the problem?
hey man! love your videos that ive seen so far. was curios if yo have a video on phase for acoustic drums? Also if I am using ableton live 10 lite, do you think I can mix drums without having a noise gate effect/plugin? only starting with using a kick drum and overhead mic for recording
Hey brother! Is there a way to edit drum stems with the warp tool but for every stem at the same time? I know you can do this with ProTools, but I have yet to find a way of doing this with Ableton! If you're editing a multi-mic recording, all time adjustments have to be made on every mic at the same time. Is there any particular way to do this?
Thanks very much! One more question (to all of you..) When i do all that steps and it is in my case clear that I always record with the same setting (room, mics, channels, bells): How can I save all this editing, eqs etc. so that I can apply them again and again (with one click) to a new recording and its tracks?!
Thanks for this video, such a helpful reference. :) Quick q- during the snare gating process, you checked to see if the smaller frequency section was a snare roll. Because it wasn't, you didn't need to do anything further. Curious though, what is your recommended process for when it is a small frequency snare roll? Automate the track to remove the gate during that section? Just lower the threshold?
thanks for the tips. sometimes it really helps to hear things talked through and hear other people's thought process. so just curious, did you basically know the type of sound you were going for as it will relate with the rest of the mix, or is this mainly for cleaning and tightening stuff up in the drums, then you will move on from there? you may have mentioned that at some point in the video, but was listening/watching while doing some other things so apologies if it's in there somewhere. thanks again!
It's all good ha I know this video is very long and it would probably benefit my channel greatly if I just stuck to more specific things but sometimes I turn the camera on just go for it. I'd say that yes you're right as I mix this whole tune I will certainly go back an adjust things in these drum effects. In my process I like to figure out the drums first and build everything from there. That's not everyone's process and I certainly don't do that every time but in this tune the drums are driving everything
nooo I really enjoy the in depth thoughts and explanations man. it's really helpful and I get pumped when I see a new one come out - was just trying to not come across as lazy lol. and open up a dialog about my question :) thanks for the additional thoughts and discussion! @@SeedtoStage
Thanks for the knowledge. I’m a super beginner and I’m wondering Where do you get drum sounds that are this basic so you can put your own mark on them? Did he record these himself from external equipment, or just find them in Ableton samples/online? Confused on where to start on that, thank you
How do you play from the cursor position. I can`t do that in Ableton and it`s driving me insane. I want to put the cursor somewhere and just hit spacebar and play from that point. Can you help me?
When you boost the gain at 0:28 seconds for your kick drum, can I do the same for my similar looking waveform, but pushing past about 3 random transient spikes I have? Or would I add a limiter in the chain before moving to the snare to remove random spikes?
im trying to record my drums but im peaking too much trying to get it all loud enough and it still sounds weak. my snare sounds too low and it isnt comming out good
I don't understand how you can make a mix on canton if you can only make 12 return shipments, that's too little to do a thorough process, I like this daw but that stops me from editing it, I even downloaded the demo but I don't know how to do it since I come from samplitude x4 pro and as you know the workflow is different, if you could get me out of the bind and give me some reference that you can do something else.
THANK YOU!!! I needed this!!! Much love brother!

I just started mixing an acoustic drum, the first EQ on the kick already gave me a lot of dopamine. Thx bro !
Learned more here in an hour than in college, for music production specifically 😂
Hahahah! I second you on that. Which college did you attend bro?

This video is what convinced me to record acoustic drums and take on the challenge of mixing myself. Thank you for this!

Love your videos! All videos! You doing fckin great job man!
Fantastic video, thanks. Where do you get Gate and EQ eight. Don´t see them on my ableton 11

just epic!

Very Interesting. Would you mix MIDI drums from a drumrack in Ableton the same way? or similarly? (eg. the stock drum sets from Ableton)
this is great but is there a way to save all these settings so you can use it on a different drum mix?

i had the same question. Did you get it answered? I just thought of getting the threshold down but I think that an automation would be best

Hello. Can I use this for hip hop (drum breaks)? Thanks in advance!!
great video

Hello, we’re you using any third party plug ins?
im trying to record my drums but im peaking too much trying to get it all loud enough and it still sounds weak. my snare sounds too low and it isnt comming out good
can anyone tell the difference between the before and after phase invert on the kick? Cos i couldnt
I don't understand how you can make a mix on canton if you can only make 12 return shipments, that's too little to do a thorough process, I like this daw but that stops me from editing it, I even downloaded the demo but I don't know how to do it since I come from samplitude x4 pro and as you know the workflow is different, if you could get me out of the bind and give me some reference that you can do something else.
everything is so perfect except the audio sync of the video makes me hard to follow when you AB a technique
how do you bus all the drums together?
