Craft apprenticeships in Ireland are really good, Bricklaying, Carpentry and plastering are all 4 year apprenticeships; broken into 3 years of onsite phases and 1 year of college phases. Apprentices received full pay during college phases. To obtain the qualification you must complete the apprenticeship fully; no leaving early with a partial qualification. The training phases are scheduled as below: -Site phase:1st year onsite with employer -College phase: 6 months in college with theory and practical exams -Site phase: 2nd year onsite with employer -College phase 3 months in college with theory and practical exams -Site phase: 3 year onsite with employer -College phase: 3 months in college with theory and practical exams. I'm Irish living in the UK and I have to say the poor quality of apprenticeship schemes in the UK is evident, demonstrated by the ability of newly "qualified" tradesmen. Here in the UK its about churning out numbers and it badly needs addressing.
Possibly the best thing I’ve heard you say Charlie , I’ve no idea what is taught in college probably too much health and safety which is important but for 3 years at Bricky college they should be coming out a bit sharper . Totally agree a transition coarse into site work is a cracking idea 👍 I’m talking first hand experience of my son joining me , it took a year for him to get cracking on his own he’s flying now though but I feel a lot of his time was wasted at college 🤷♂️

It's exactly the same in Carpentry what we were told to teach the lads was next to useless in the real world. Its why I left teaching after falling out with city and guilds over the crap they wanted to teach.

In Denmark we have college but it works very differently. When we choose to become a bricklayer, we start 6 months at school, where we learn, and lay a bit. Then we find a company and work for them for about 9 months, then come back to school for 5-10 weeks. They track our process, and eventually, we get to h5, which is the exam we need to pass to become a bricklayer. We have a theory for 3 weeks, and then we have 50 hours to build it. In Denmark a bricklayer is doing many things, we lay bricks, tiles, plaster, and casts. And we need to have everything in the building we make

@MrThebigredone phase 2 is 5 months amd phase 4 and 6 are ten weeks. When i did my apprentiship I was sent to bishopstown in cork for phase 2, and DIT Bolton Street in Dublin for phases 4 and 6. Loved it so I did. We had small , 11 of us. I found it great as the teacher had more time to pin point Any flaws and help us improve on them. I'd recommend alot of young people nowadays to do a trade. Getting payed to learn is a massive bonus compared to students trying to get a degree amd paying big money on courses fee alone. That's my outlook on it anyway.
I was an apprentice in brickwork i got messed around so much ended up labouring for 2 years on 45 pound a day 4 days a week. Now im a plastering labourer hopefully learning to go off on my own.
Speaking as an ex hod-carrier with 14 years on the trowel who takes pleasure in teaching, perhaps an element of shame should be fostered and directed towards trowels who are unwilling or too lazy to teach hoddies on site. Sure, as a brickie you can be sacked by the foreman for teaching but if you can get at least one through it's worth the risk.
Well said about the college teaching the young apprentices absolutely nothing to do with what you actually do on site. Spend half the day drawing & practical work is all completely old fashioned with the way they’ve not changed the curriculum since the 1970s. I discussed this with my collage tutor & he just didn’t believe what I was saying! Simply because he’s been teaching the same thing for years & years & when you explain what you do on site & how it has changed they haven’t changed with the modern way a building site actually works. I’d love to have been your apprentice Charlie I’d be twice the Bricky I am now. Got my EPA in 5 weeks time so I can’t wait to get off the apprenticeship wages and get grafting properly.
agree with the college thing , in ireland you do onsite first, then do 20 weeks in college then back on site for a time then 10 weeks in college then back on site for another period then back to college for your finale 10 weeks ,then back on site , the whole apprenticipe takes 4 years, you have to complete so many modules when your onsite that your employer says you have completed lol ,
I personally learnt more on site then I did in college in my eyes college was just there so they can keep and eye on me and make sure I’m progressing towards doing my end point assessment I passed 2 years ago now but I also did extensions so it was good for me to be in college laying every week as I wasn’t always getting on the trowel at work I’m trying to get into site work I prefer to be laying then doing everything but can’t complain get paid when it’s wet and when it’s sunny
I have always wondered why they don’t make the boards in white. Heat is mortars enemy and white rejects heat while any color absorbs it and redistributes it to the mortar making it kick quicker. Just my thoughts. lol. Great video homie!💯🔥🤙
With regards to the Apprentices, Its the same story over here in the US. As a Foreman I almost always have 1-2 Apprentices under my wing and I tell ya they don't know shit. Its a real pitty that we cant do a better job in the Union Halls classroom with these young Lads. Instead I get to teach them the shit they should already know when I don't have the time to do it. When I was an apprentice over 40 years ago it was 6 months at college then 6 months on site then it was 6 weeks at college and 6 weeks on site and it worked well
Your right Charlie, I’m doing a bricklaying apprenticeship now and the college system is crap, the education system now is ruined all the the teachers seem to not care about us and just let us get on with it and not actually teaching us properly, I’ve been on an apprenticeship for about 2 years now and still wouldn’t have the confidence to go on my own and do jobs alone as haven’t been trained properly.
Apprenticeship in Ireland... we do 8 or 10 months on site then 20 weeks college then back to site for another 9 months ,back to 10 weeks college then back to site for another 9 or 10 months and another 10 weeks in college.. then your last stint on site and your qualified... it usually take 4 years depends on college places.. but they can only turn you down once... so you get a good sense if a lad is going to stick it out if he lasts the first 8 months on site and if hes willing to work... no point wasting time in college if you cannot hake it on site.. i didn't realise it was different in England... we are just lacking young people coming into the trade's now
Be easy on him Charles, he's a growing lad. He'll be 6'6" by next year. Encourage him to understand the theory in-out and he'll surpass you in no time...
In Australia you spend 4 days a week on sites and 1 day collage it works fine. To the boss trys to stop you from going to collage because you make him to much laying bricks all week
ABSOLUTELY spot on, with the college thing mate. It is exactly the same in my industry. There are 1000's of students going to university every year to learn lighting in the entertainments industry, they come on site after graduating and do not have a clue how to do what we do. As you say, it is a shame. Also a total waste of time and monney.
Never learnt at college started off as a labour learnt by watching the bricky and when i had time jumped on the line it's same over in Australia these guys come out of school and have no idea what's going on
When I served my time I did six weeks at college then six on site then five at college then five on site for the entire three years. It defo works then your not going in blind. Yes you can lay brick / block etc but your not site ready now. Thou that was thirty years ago. All change now.

My boy was at college doing bricklaying, he was doing english garden wall bond and and all these other bonds and arches that hell never use, waste of time . Colleges should focus on walls that are 20-30 bricks long and let them run it in for months, running in from one end then running in from the other. Show them how to use profiles, its crazy the 2 most important things to make maximum money and they dont teach them . Its all wrong and thats why after 3 years there still struggling
All college teaches today is basically how to do a fackin good garden wall 🤣 they would just give u a plan for a fancy wall you would never see or build on site and leave you to it.... my opinion is there was never enough actual tutoring... someone watching and helping to improve technique. Luckily I learned by watching the brickys at work, but without that I would have been hopeless 😅
When I did my apprenticeship, was college block release, then so meany weeks on site the back college, it's not rocket science, the simple ,commense ,mmmm😊

I didn’t see him use his spirit level to see if the blocks were level @ 1.22 only used it to if it was plumb.
