My whole squadron had deployed to Nellis from Tucson to support a weeks-long huge exercise. I had been traveling and deploying a lot during those years in support of the wars, away from my wife a lot, and this experience immeasurably, immeasurably lifted my spirits. I grew up with TNG and standing on the bridge it took all my self-control not to jump to a station and try to fire phasers myself! I feel very lucky to have gotten to see it. It doesn't take much to be "off" to break that illusion, though. Had Frakes been directing, yet, when this was filmed? He seems like the CONSUMMATE professional here. I don't imagine I'm alone in this regard. Makes me wonder why they didn't place ads in the breaks in UK reruns of Next-Gen to promote it.
Seems like not much thought went into how to make it a lasting attraction and I read that when the hotel wanted their space (no pun intended) back it was just too expensive to move it all. This is fantastic. How did you come across this video?
I had a friend who lived in Vegas and we visited this attraction several times. It was absolutely spectacular to be fully immersed in the Star Trek universe.
The Borg Encounter was fun, but it completely dropped the premise of transporting you to the future and it wasn't as good for this reason. It felt like a haunted house add-on, which is really what it was, and not a self-contained attraction like "Klingon Encounter" was.
The brilliance of Klingon Encounter was how it subverted your expectations. The initial queue was clearly modeled after Star Tours at Disneyland, so if you had been on that ride you thought you knew what you were in for... Then you get beamed onto the Enterprise! I can't explain what a mind blowing experience that was. Then when the simulator ride comes at the end, you get a panoramic view out of the shuttle craft with windows in the ceiling, not just the little movie screen you get on Star Tours.
The ride engineers clearly knew what they were doing, subverting expectations all along the way

My wife and I went there several times. I think our first time was within a couple of months of the opening. I don't remember what we ordered at Quark's Bar but we must have had some kind of meat since we had a steak knife along with the other utensils. At the end we quietly asked our server if they would care if we walked off with the knife and they kind of quietly said "Nobody else bothers to ask so go ahead." and even brought us a single place setting along with a menu. Unfortunately we gave the stuff to a friend of the wife who's really into ST and it immediately disappeared into the black hole that is the woman's house. I wonder if she even still has it. I've looked and looked and can't find the steak knife online anywhere.
