  • This was a Garrard type A Turntable purchased on e-bay.
Just like one Darrel had back in 1960. When he received the turntable is wasn't working.

    Thanks for a great presentation.
I have advice regarding the storage of old 78rpm discs. These are heavy and brittle. If too many are stacked horizontally, those at the bottom of the pile can be cracked. I have found this to be the case when looking through stored collections.

That's great! Did you test it with normal house voltage?

THANK YOU for saying _GArrard_ and not _GErrard_ - just a pet peeve of mine - nice one and great video! Considering Garrard began making watches in Swindon UK, these turntables are indeed a natural progression...

Have the one I purchased in 1959, was going to restore it, but still in the box it came in, that drive wheel is worn. Have over 200 LP records, most converted to MP3's have over 4,000 songs on a 16GB miniature USB stick. Have a Technics SL-D33 that is also gathering dust and a Sony 10" reel to reel TC-758, another dust collector with folded horn enclosures weighing about 100 pounds each. Practically all of us listen to music with our headphones connected to our cellular phones.

Ha, talking about LP's, ex-wife kept on placing my records on my hand built Fisher amplifier. Had to get rid of that for solid state. Run much cooler.

I disagree with you on how you grab and handle your LP. My dad taught me when I was maybe 10 years old, always pinch both sides of the LP just on the outer edge with only your (clean) thumb and index finger finger. The first time the LP is unsealed, take the sleeve and LP out and turn the opening of the sleeve to the opening of the jacket. This way you'll always have the open end right at your thumb and index finger. You'll never have to put all that much stress to the opening of the jacket to remove the LP. Then always be slow and sure when returning the LP back in to the sleeve with some sort of support to the opposite side of the jacket so that no damage is done to the sealed end.

The drive wheel is NOT the most critical component of the turntable, the motor is. Without a motor that is strong (doesn't slow with the pressure of the drive wheel) and maintains accurate speed, the turntable is useless.
The drive wheel is simply what transmits the rotational energy of the motor to the rest of the mechanics (via the platter) so that it cycles properly., and dependent upon which tier of the capstan drive spindle it is set at, turns the platter at the necessary speed.
Yes, if the drive wheel becomes worn then the speed will be altered, but replacing one is easy and fast and not expensive.

My platter doesn't turn at all when l switch on the turntable. But when I take of the platter I can see the motor spinning and the pulley rubber wheel is turning but when you put back on the platter the platter still doesn't turn at all if I help it turn it might start to spin abit and then stops
