  • This is Part-5 of a 7-part series on various text effects in Blender. In this part, we will learn how to emboss a text on a round surface, like a cylinder, in Blender. We'll first bend the text, and then emboss the same on the cylinder. Please watch the video for the complete tutorial. It will help if you first watch the previous parts given below. If you have any question on this tutorial, please leave your comment below.

    In order for my text to curve properly, without making a big X of text, I have to have the Empty set to Y - 90degrees and Text all zeros. For whatever reason it does not work if they are the same. Takes a lot of time to figure these things out. I know it's hard to make a tutorial for each application but somewhere in these tutorials (not just yours) there should be reference to the apparent fact that orientation and certain values could be different depending on certain orientations and such. But, I appreciate your work.

      Very correctly said. We actually talked about this in another tutorial on bending, check at 2:39 here 👉 ruclips.net/video/KgM-nWTHAJU/видео.html (it's a different tutorial on bending). Also, you can watch this tutorial 👉 ruclips.net/video/qumU349VpWE/видео.html The first method is same as we have already seen, but look at the second method discussed towards the end of this tutorial. You may find it more useful & easier to apply for your case.

      @@5MinutesBlender I was able to get the Text on The Pipe and it looks very good. I used this method. ruclips.net/video/y8iV2CEXFDQ/видео.html
      But, I'm having a hell of a time slicing/printing it. There is a Fuzzy Skin feature in Cura that gives a good texture to my model for grip but it ruins the text. So I'm trying to use support blocker and whatever else to get it right. Thanks for your time and replies. One step close but still feels like a mile away.

      Hi, can you please check if the correct axis is used for bending? Without the visuals, it is difficult to know what went wrong in your case. If the text is bending, but it is bending in an incorrect way, it is most probably because of some wrong axis. Please check the original rotation of the text, then the rotation of the empty, and finally the bend axis. They should be in-sync as shown in the tutorial. If nothing works, you can send your blend file to us, we will more than happy to look into it. You can get our contact details (Email ID) in the About section of this channel.

    Hello Blender newbie here. Is there any way to make text stick out or embossed on a more complex shape with multiple bends? I tried using shrink wrap but end up with a bent 2d version of the text which can't be thickened. Offset only moves it off the target object. I'm trying to add text and shapes to banners and capes. Any help would be appreciated.

      Please try to use Shrinkwrap constraint instead of Shrinkwrap modifier and let us know about the result you get.

    Tanks for the Video!
    Just one question.
    I want the text to be angled and rotate around a sphere. However, I can't move the text on the X-axis because then it rotates.
    I also have the problem that the text does not follow an angled trajectory, but a straight trajectory and the text is angled. Would be grateful for help :)

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  2 года назад

      Hi, I guess the empty is not placed correctly for the bending. It is a pretty common issue in bending a text field in Blender. Maybe you are using another axis (X vs. Y) for the orientation or it could be something else but in the similar line. If you can send your blend file to me, I can investigate and suggest the fix. It must be something minor, please do not lose hope. You can find our contact details (Email ID) in the About section of this channel. Thanks!

    • @lao-ce8982
      @lao-ce8982 2 года назад +1

      Hi there. I had the same issue. And I think I solved it. Instead of changing the empty’s X rotation, try to change the Y axis and bend the text on X.

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  2 года назад +1

      @@lao-ce8982 Yes, based on the initial orientation of the object, we might have to use either the X or the Y axis. Thanks for pointing this out clearly!

    Edit > Preferences > Add-Ons, search for Straight Skeleton and activate that. Select the front faces of your text, and use Face > Inset Straight Skeleton to make a single-segment "bevel" on the text. Hold Ctrl while you move to inflate the face. Straight Skeleton creates a clean bevel, and you can add/scale loop cuts to put in more segments after the initial bevel; it saves you the mess of overlapping geometry on tight geo. This algorithm will be part of a future bevel update in Blender, but is available in an included Add-on for now.

    When I bend it stretches' out the text. How did you keep the stretch from happing?

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  7 месяцев назад

      It can happen if your empty is not placed correctly. It should be placed at the same location of the origin of your text object, with correct orientation (XYZ angles). The angles won't affect the stretch, but an offset (i.e. location mismatch) can cause such stretches.

    Hello Again, @1:40 you add a Solidify Modifier. Could one not use the Extrude in Geometry just as well?

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  Год назад +1

      Yes, extrude is just fine. But a modifier gives us a non-destructive design. You can change the modifier settings later should you need a different thickness. Editing a geometry later may be little more challenging. No other differences.

With a master's in Comp Science, I do have some industry experience in programming (java/ python/ mainframe), but currently I am engaged with Investment portfolio management for my living. I have published couple of novels (thrillers) since writing/ story-telling is my pass time or hobby. So that's all about me and I am sure people won't find it interesting if we make videos on my life here 🤣🤣 I am super bad in creating Vlog etc. How about you? At 5:31 you say select "Y".
    However, in Blender 3.0.01 It works with the "X", not the "Y".

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  2 года назад +1

      It is not version specific. It depends on the orientation of the text object. You can see that we created the text parallel to Y axis. That is why we need to select Y at 5:31 But in another case the text may be placed differently, so we need to use the appropriate axis. What I loved is, you have correctly figured out that X-axis works in your case instead of Y. That was really great discovery 👍 For more on this bending, and to understand it better, you can watch this tutorial as well 👉 ruclips.net/video/KgM-nWTHAJU/видео.html

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  5 месяцев назад +1

      My suggestion is, don't extrude the text. First do it the way it is shown in the other tutorial you referenced. Then apply the modifies for the text to give it a permanent projected shape on the target surface. Now add a solidify modifier for the text to give it a thickness. Now follow this tutorial for the emboss. I think overall it will give you a better result.
