“He was alive yesterday?” I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this episode or that scene alone, but that line brings a tear to my eye every single time.
THIS ONE!!!! THIS is the episode that actually had me crying by the end of it. "He was alive yesterday" that line both destroyed and changed me as a person.
I scrolled down to the comments before starting the episode and saw all the "He was alive yesterday" comments and immediately realized what episode this was... That is how big of an impact that line left on me! Absolutely heartbreaking and incredible directing from Matthew!
This episode literally haunted all of us who watched it. Every time you see the episode say directed by Matthew Gray Gubler, we all know this is going to be traumatic episode
This episode is one that I always consider to be one of the creepiest and most heart-wrenching because there is never an explanation - and that freaks me out more than anything else.
this one just breaks my heart so much. it sticks with me more than most of them do. its that ending where the parents find out their son had been missing for years and died one day before they got rescued. one day. i dont think i could live with that as a parent. this one haunts me.
Oh... Oh no. I thought this episode was a later season... god damn. What an absolute gut-punch of an episode. "He was alive yesterday" sends tingles up my spine
People say their child is "17 months" rather than a "year-and-a-half" because there are still milestones of growth at the month marks when they are that young.
"He was alive yesterday" the actual the voice break. I knew what episode this was like 20 secounds in bc its just one of the especially heartbreaking ones.
One of the and a lot of peoples favorite episode. It’s definitely up there for me just because the story and characters in this episode were so good. The villains were pieces of disgusting garbage who deserved to rot upside down in prison. The parents who were grieving their children felt real and connected. “He was alive yesterday” will always hit. And of course the bau were great the characters have such dynamics and intricacies that I enjoy a lot.
I remeber literally having nightmares the first time I watched this episode. It is one of my favorites probably, but it is just as creepy as a remember 😮
Oh god this one 😭 Matthew directs the craziest episodes 😭 and to think they never thought cremating them is how sick this was I wanted throw up on this Soo bad
"He was alive yesterday?" just messed me up the first time I watched this episode. I can't imagine the parents knowing they were THAT close to seeing their kid again.
when the man comes tot ake the little girl out of bed and the other one says hurt me not her i assumed they were talking about pedophelia. when a man comes to take a little kid out of bed at night like that thats generally the implied event, if it were a beating it would be more aggressive.
He was alive yesterday breaks me every single time I watch this episode. I think the man may have been because of the scene where the older girl told him to take her and leave the girl behind if not sa he did some abuse
these people are the definition of evil. if they actually think those are their kids, their sick. the fact that they are hiding them and are willing to cremate them alive before returning them, shows they know these aren't their kids, but don't care. how can people honestly be this evil?
George Carlin had some ideas on creative executions. You can check out his sketch on the death penalty if you want some inspiration for the wife's sentence.
No. I think they feel more guilt that they stopped looking for him and tried to move on. I don’t think they’d get past that to focus it anywhere else. But they could always project their feelings onto amy, I suppose.
Only a year late to this reaction but I had to comment that although this is one of my fave eps - I only just realised that Amy's mother was the girl in the well in Silence Of The Lambs - what an absolute perfect episode
6:37-7:0413:29-13:42 I feel like these are hinting that the man (probably aided by the woman) was committing SA I would have sentenced them to be burned alive as slowly and painfully as possible
So, the way the first woman was calling for “her missing” child, I think was a call back to how Malcom X was killed. I think the way it was with him somebody was calling for help and then the shooter killed him.
I actually didn't remember this one as much as the others in the comment section. Maybe I blacked it out bc it's so horrific. I would give death to both of them. I think they were a tag team of pedophiles, when they were coming to the children's bed at night and the way he was talking that definitely seems to be the case. The way the other child said take me instead. The way the children were acting and the way they were aging out. They just couldn't take it too far bc this is a show on regular television and the audience doesn't want to see that either. Evan Peters character was really minding his Ps and Qs to stay alive. What a horrible horrible thing to do to children and the poor parents. I wouldn't be able to live, id simply go insane knowing I missed saving my child by one day and they were incinerated and we aren't sure if they were conscious or not at the time. So so horrible.
If anyone has ever watch the movie Prisoners, it’s odd how much this episode matches that film as if this episode was the perspective of the kids kidnapped in that film
GOD F*CKING DAMN IT. I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS EPISODE ALMOST ALL MY LIFE. I SAW IT WHEN I WAS A KID AND NOW I FEEL SOOOO HAPPY, YOU HAVE NO IDEA, YIPPIEEE🎉🎉🎉🎉
This episode broke me because of the end the parents of Steven the fact that he was alive I was upset I was couldn’t they keep him alive in any way shape or form. If dead at least his body still not have cremated 😢
Woah what an episode this was. No out of all the none personal motive driven unsubs in the show this episode nails the unsettling creepy atmosphere much better than Hopeless. Is it fitting the first evil female unsub in the series looks like a literal witch and the actresses character she plays is practically a witch of human being as well. I agree with giving her the death penalty since it's clear she's the ring leader of this child hostage holding operation. The husband while giving off some unsettling tones he just seems too almost juvenile minded to be leader and for that possibly might not be capable of full comprehending what hes helping put into effect. So he's clearly just a helper. Compared to Cradle To Grave where alongside the sexual assault he it was clear in that episode the husband was the ring leader so he had full account of all the heinous and dishonourable acts that happen with those women in that episode. Not to mention the dark twist with the kid the wife cremated at the beginning of the episode. If there's one thing that Criminal Minds Season 5 stands out for is really taking advantage of the horror theme consistently through out the season. Which also reflects in the advertising of the season when it first came on television back in the day.
Watching your sentencing… I’ve always believed that if you hurt animals, children or the elderly… you should be sentenced to jail and every day of your life what you did should be done to you…
The "He was alive yesterday" have haunted me since I've seen it for the first time. This and "So is Tracy Lambert" I think I will never forget.
I feel like I can say pretty confidently that everyone has been waiting for you to get to this episode
Fr! This episode is one of the best in my opinion!
“He was alive yesterday?”
I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this episode or that scene alone, but that line brings a tear to my eye every single time.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: MGG [Spencer's actor] should go into horror movie directing because his episodes are always so chilling
His episodes definitely have the creepy factor. Brilliant
THIS ONE!!!! THIS is the episode that actually had me crying by the end of it. "He was alive yesterday" that line both destroyed and changed me as a person.
Yeah me to. I was waiting for him to get to this episode. This episode breaks me everytime. I always cry
It doesn't matter how many times I have watched this episode I cry at that line every single time.

Was about to say the same thing😭
This line broken me every time
Such a well done episode. Hats off to Matthew (Spencer's actor) for directing this. Also,
"He was alive yesterday?" 😢
I think this episode has made me cry more than any other. That line completely wrecks me every time.
Yea the line from the father always hits hard. Without fail I always get emotional.
"He was alive yesterday" always breaks me

YES!!! This is one of my Favorite Episodes, such a Rollercoaster of Emotions...Evan Peters and Beth Grant(who will forever be Helen in Speed)
this one just breaks my heart so much. it sticks with me more than most of them do. its that ending where the parents find out their son had been missing for years and died one day before they got rescued. one day. i dont think i could live with that as a parent. this one haunts me.
Then I would advise not giving up until you’re absolutely certain
This is one of Criminal Minds' best. Such an incredible episode!
Oh... Oh no. I thought this episode was a later season... god damn. What an absolute gut-punch of an episode. "He was alive yesterday" sends tingles up my spine
I think the worst part about this one - for me anyway - is we never found out why.
"he was alive yesterday" one of the best lines in the show, always makes me cry and it will haunt me forever
"He was alive yesterday!" Will always haunt me
People say their child is "17 months" rather than a "year-and-a-half" because there are still milestones of growth at the month marks when they are that young.
"He was alive yesterday"
That's so heartbreaking 😭😭
i cry everytime in this ep mgg always directs one of the bests episodes
I didn't realize this episode was in season 5! This one definitely put me in one of those...dark mental spaces for a while after.
Matthew gray gubler directed this film ep I thought he did well and casting Evan peters is awesome
I think this might be my favorite episode. Ahhh so well done. Evan Peters is such an amazing actor
One of the best episodes, so emotional, so messed up.
I don't think I've ever seen as much horror on your face during this show as the scene where the box is burned.
One of my favorite episodes. That Father breaks my heart everytime.
But on a completely unrelated note can we talked about how pretty Emily looks? 😂
This episode has to be one of the few episodes that stayed with me after all these years once watching it. Might be my number 1 creepiest episode
"He was alive yesterday" the actual the voice break. I knew what episode this was like 20 secounds in bc its just one of the especially heartbreaking ones.

I always cry watching this episode no matter how many times I see it 😂
I've been waiting for this episode, so disturbing and hat's off to Matthew Gray Gubler for directing this episode!
didn't have to look at the thumbnail to recognise this one...omg it kills me...
Oh god this one 😭 Matthew directs the craziest episodes 😭 and to think they never thought cremating them is how sick this was I wanted throw up on this Soo bad
haven't seen this episode for years upon year. but I knew exactly he was alive yesterday. like everybody else that line lives on in your mind.
This is one of my all time fav eps!! So glad you're reacting to criminal minds, it's such a great series and no one ever watched the whole thing!
This is such an emotional episode. I knew the ending, but still teared up. 💛💛💛
My favorite criminal minds episode, I don't even know how many times I've watched it
"He was alive yesterday?" just messed me up the first time I watched this episode. I can't imagine the parents knowing they were THAT close to seeing their kid again.
This is the one I’ve been waiting for.. so messed up, and of course it’s directed by Spencer
This is one of the best episodes!
This episode always breaks my heart. "He was alive yesterday" 😢😢

That’s what i always assumed was the implication. I like that it’s a bit ambiguous still. Makes it even more unsettling.
This episode together with To Hell...and Back and 100 will haunt me for years to come.
He was alive yesterday breaks me every single time I watch this episode.

Based on true story. It always freaked me out.
I've been waiting impatiently for this one 😭
This was the unsub who made it to the Complete Monster list in TV tropes despite "only" having 9 kills BTW. The others have dozens to hundreds.
20:46 I wonder if Steven's parents resent Amy for surviving when Steven did not.
No. I think they feel more guilt that they stopped looking for him and tried to move on. I don’t think they’d get past that to focus it anywhere else. But they could always project their feelings onto amy, I suppose.

The “he was alive yesterday?” Gets me every single time 🥺
2:15 that used to drive me crazy too but you will understand when you see how much kids change month to month. Especially in the first 2 years.
So, the way the first woman was calling for “her missing” child, I think was a call back to how Malcom X was killed. I think the way it was with him somebody was calling for help and then the shooter killed him.
Oh this one, I knew it the moment I saw the title though I've only seen it once or twice. It just sticks with you.

That "man" should go in Deadpool's little oxygen chamber forever, and have his life artificially extended just so he could suffer longer
This is my favorite episode that isn't a multiple episode arc or doesn't revolve around one of our main characters.
Oh wait, i need to prepare myself for this one.
the gube killed this episode, very unforgettable for me.
This will always be one of their best episodes.
GOD F*CKING DAMN IT. I WAS LOOKING FOR THIS EPISODE ALMOST ALL MY LIFE.

22:16 so either the brazen bull, or the rat in the jar... I'd go with rat.
i’ve been waiting for this one !!!!!
Finally we’re here!!!

This always reminds Me of Jaycee Dugard case . The victims are not always killed.
I tried to hold out but spaghetti was being cooked the onions didn’t help
Watching your sentencing…
I’ve always believed that if you hurt animals, children or the elderly… you should be sentenced to jail and every day of your life what you did should be done to you…
Eye for an Eye leaves the world blind is something I do not agree with.
