  • This video is NOT about bashing other peoples' views, so please don't look for any of the comments I've shown.
It is also not a plea for support - I'm not angry, I'm not upset, I'm perfectly content. And the positive comments I get outweigh the negative 100 fold, so the support I feel from you guys is already absolutely incredible.
It IS supposed to be a mild source of amusement, as some of the comments I get are quite funny (IMO), and also to show you that the most important thing about creativity is that you are doing it for you.
AND I really like this painting, so you might even enjoy painting along from this reference - unsplash.com/photos/panorama-...
Let me know what the funniest 'feedback' you've ever had was in the comments :D

The comments section is revealing who the artists are: people who have struggled with the fear of the blank page, creative blocks, and know the real value in accepting the freedom to play, to be authentic, to allow yourself the freedom to do things how you want to or love to. That’s art. Love your post!

I use art as a form of mindfulness as part of my treatment for chronic PTSD. Your videos and loose style have affirmed how I feel about making my art. I found that trying to be realistic in my art was counterproductive to moving into a mindfulness state of mind. Love this video!

Im a photographer and I tell my students to remember, no matter how great a photo may seem to them, how perfect, not everyone is going to like your work. When it comes to my personal photography and watercolors, I rarely shoot or paint what I see, but rather what I feel. That’s where I find peace and happiness.

I really enjoy videos that describe the thinking and the process in creating a sketch. Personally, I love the gloriously chaotic look. Looseness can certainly be on a spectrum and where we are on a given day can vary. Doing it for our own enjoyment and being authentic - so important!

I am not sure how you are going to take this, but your sketching and painting is the type of art, and actually the only art I would buy and hang on my walls. I find it freeing, enjoyable to ponder at, it is detailed but not overly done that the imagination is not allowed to wander and I love it. Your color choice is not burdened and one can see the lightness and joy in each stroke of your pen or brush. I can only hope one day to attain a snippet of the talent you have...I am trying...every day...so thank you for sharing your gift with the world...even to those who do not know how to appreciate nice things, maybe one day they will wake up and find joy.

I enjoy watching your havoc and chaos (your words!). At times I wish I could be looser with my art, but my style is just different. Sometimes I really love your end result, sometimes not as much, but like you said you aren’t always happy with the end result yourself, so I don’t feel too mean saying that. However, I always enjoy seeing your process and your enthusiasm and I appreciate your encouragement to give it a go! I don’t understand why people feel the need to be rude, if they really don’t like it, just stop watching!

Hey Toby, I like the way you present your art. And as simple as it may look, your loose style takes a lot of practice. Unfortunately, some people don't understand that. I enjoyed this so much. Once again listening to your voice as I followed along in my sketch pad was relaxing and enlightening. I am not comfortable using the ink like you. But I did use a micron pen. I use to use a pencil first, with constant erasing. Just using the micron pen has helped me just go for it. There are no mistakes in art, right. I looked at the picture provided and just did my thing while listening to you. I am so grateful for your unique painting style and teaching method. I even purchased a sketch pad devoted to your lessons. I even have a tiny pad in my purse to be able to sketch at any given moment when I am out and about. When I was younger my motto was "perfection I will accept nothing less". That motto has fallen by the wayside , thank goodness. Painting is joy and escape for me. It is the journey of the perfectly, imperfect. Thank you for helping find my confidence in sketching.

Also, I like that you leave a lot of white, much more than I learned to leave. It makes you paintings look fresh. (If “fresh” does not mean something nice in the UK, know that it is a compliment in the US.)

I am a very new sketcher and painter, and have settled on Toby's loose style as what I enjoy, too. I also am learning how important white space is and employing it in my paintings. I was painting with my 12 year old granddaughter last week (a natural artist she is) and she told me she loves my use of whitespace, but that her art teacher *always* discourages the students from using white space. What a shame!
