This is another shameful Metrolinx case, and the city agrees to move forward with this price tag. That is a slap in tax payers face.

i agree totally with Josh Matlow...the city in its next meeting should turn down this project at that cost...150M could build at least 15 homes or a small rental apartment complex...or two to three community centres, a medical clinic, or many other more necessary projects...a bicycle path is good but 150M is almost 75000 per metre...totally unreasonable!

Something people need to remember with this, the $150 million price tag is the cost Metrolinx (which is under the provincial governments authority) wants to charge the City of Toronto. The actual construction cost may be different depending on how much money Metrolinx/The Province is putting towards the project itself and what other construction needs to be done in the rail corridor to facilitate the path's construction (ex: rerouting utilities). Mostly likely the original 23 million cost was a lowball price point that maybe even included provincial money thats no longer included in this new price, and this new insanely high price is an attempt by someone at metrolinx/the provincial government to pawn off other costs onto the Toronto city taxpayer

For that price you could build one if not two beautiful brand new hostels capable of housing three or four tent cities, and pay all the employees working in them a king's ransom and feed each of the residents like kings and queens to boot. And they wonder why there's a housing crisis, it's because city council never learned a thing about budgeting back in grade school and instead learned all about how to be extremely selfish.

Metrolinx needs foreign competition in Ontario to speed up innovation and lower costs. I assume 95% of that $150M cost is designated for selective salaries within the organization and provincial government. Also, the province must audit Metrolinx projects for the last 20 years and make the results public.

  • @paulw245

Metrolinx is fleecing Toronto as usual and city council is allowing it to happen. The railpath has become a dog walk for the people who live along it. It is no longer a safe bike route as it's location does not really go anywhere useful. I would much prefer a path that ended downtown and was more oriented to bikes and people walking. I don't support this use of city money and I agree with Josh.

That raises questions though. Why do we need four new bridges in just two km? Are the proposed designs the right ones, or could they be built for less? If the proposed bridges are necessary as designed, then isn't this is "bridge project with an MUP" rather than "an MUP with bridges"? (MUP = Multi-user path).

Does the public not deserve something nice with their tax dollars. A park in which everyone can enjoy. If the $ 150 million was for the police it would still never be enough. The police today are over funded and over staffed. They are mismanaged and need to manage the resources they have. Why would you reward people that waste the taxpayer's money ? I have watched some of them downtown and I can tell you there are too many of them not doing any work. Lazy. Over paid and overstaffed for sure. And not doing any work. Too many of them show up just for one call, and then a block away people are waiting for someone to show up. We have too many other needs in the city besides blindly giving the police more money every year. Crime keeps dropping the past number of years and yet police budgets keep going up. Wake up people. The money needs to go to the other areas in need to run a city. And our police need to do their jobs and work like the rest of us. And stop being a bunch of crybabies whining for more government money and handouts. Let's have a park that everyone can enjoy. That makes Toronto a better city to live in. It's something positive we can all enjoy.

Yep…step up Josh…concentrate on your own ruined neighborhood instead of poking your nose into the West end.

Doug Ford changed the law to force the city to accept unlimited development at midtown, so Matlow has no ability to stop new high rise condos from being developed there. He only has some minor leeway to shape the specific forms of the buildings. Even there, Doug Ford put restrictions on what changes the city can ask for.
