  • This goofy western farce sees Hogan (Charles Murray) encounter savage Indians, a roving bear, and a mob of jealous cowboys as he braves the Wild Frontier and conquers the heart of Cactus Kate.
Modern assessments of the Keystone oeuvre merely suffice to mention Ford Sterling; It seems nowadays Charles Murray's name and comic stylings are footnotes, or worse, forgotten. Murray's turn as the titular Hogan lasted for at least seven films, a handful of which can be found online. According to Brent Walker's book Mack Sennett's Fun Factory, Hogan Out West is the last film the character would appear in, though Murray would stay on at Keystone for several years after his turn as Hogan ended.
According to one of the titles in Blackhawk's text intro (here excised), this standard 8mm print was "Copied in September, 1960, from a 35mm paper positive in the Library of Congress"... but the 8mm version looks just terrible. I did the best I could with this poorly printed, seemingly water-damaged copy of the movie.
The film happens to feature the greatest title card of all time, found at 4:23.
